Plus there is something called muscle memory, if you stop lifting for a couple of years and start again you'll build muscle much much quicker and you'll get back into your former shape in no time.

That's not what muscle memory is. Muscle memory refers to the ability to retain a sequence of motor commands after lots of repetition. It's really procedural memory and it reduces the cognitive load so you don't have to think about the movements you're doing once you get them down. Like how your mouth knows how to make a "t" sound. You don't have to think okay first I put the tongue to the roof of my mouth right behind my teeth and then I stop up the airflow and the release it I one bust without using my voicebox. You just talk. But when you were young you had to experiment with all that first.

I suppose it could help you remember how to lift something over your head effectively and maybe your good form would build muscle more efficiently?

@ leighzard

I know.
I don't know whats its really called, some people call it ''muscle memory'', but its meant to describe the effect your muscles getting bigger much quicker if you have lifted before vs. someone doing it for the first time, even with both doing perfect form. The muscles ''remember'' they were bigger and stronger and get back to that shape much quicker.
That's why many athletes are back on track so quick after even heavy injuries.

All I'm saying is, if there's an apocalypse, one of us is going to be Mad Max and the other a shriveled husk since there's barely any protein.

Eh, not sure why all the anti lifting talk. I lift because its fun, there is a sense of accomplishment, and skinny fat is just not a good look on anyone yet its probably the most common look at your local beach.

Also lifting with proper form is actually very safe. Running is more dangerous.

Actually, I don't drink that much.  I'm much better at throwing coffee down my pie hole than beer or something.

I'd rather take a self defense class like Krav Maga 4 times a week for 1.5 hours. Then you'd have proper form, muscle memory and be in great shape... and can do more than try and throw a haymaker or lift a trash can in case you are in a situation to defend yourself.

Again... not trying to rag on lifting. It's a great form of exercise. I'm just too much of a power gamer - if I'm going to put that much effort into something, it's either got to have a financial pay off or a practical one. It's why I prefer going to kick boxing classes over spending time on a treadmill.

If you think that lifting barbells only enables you to lift barbells you are so very wrong, I've been in fights before and I can telly you, strength comes in extremely handy.
If you have an opponent who knows how to protect his head very well, is heavier and stronger than you you're in trouble even with all your kickboxing moves.
When I was attacked I grabbed and lifted my attacker and threw him on the ground, as he was on the floor recovering I sat on him so he could not get up and one punch into the face was enough to convince him to stop. And that guy easily weighed 150kg.

Of course strength paired with martial arts training is best.

in a fight i'll take speed and agility over strength any time....

Strength enables you to move weight much quicker, and that weight is you. Strength makes you faster, it does not slow you down unless you approach unnatural roidhead bodybuilder level. Look how jacked the mixed martial arts fighters usually are. And they are lightning fast.

And guess what sprinters do, the fastest humans on earth - they do tons of strength training, and they're jacked too.
