I have a friend who is currently experiencing issues with what we believe may be save game coruption. He was playing his game fine for days, until tonight when the latest 5-6 save game slots he loads causes the game to CTD without any message.

I've heard of people with save game corruption before, but they say that the game either tells them the save is corrupted before loading, or that the saves are completely missing. His saves are all there, it just crashes during the loading screen. Do we know why this might be the case? What the cause of it is, and if it is perhaps fixable? He's hesitant to start another save at this point. The EA help forums have been (not) surprisingly mum on this issue, so I figured I'd ask here.

Specs: AMD Phenom II 630 Quad Core, 2.8 ghz nvidia Geforce GTX 460 1gb, 12gb ram. Currently he's using patch 2.0.

I've run the game in vanilla, 5 playthroughs and over 200 saves - never experienced this myself. So I'm assuming the cause may be patch 2.0? Anyone else having/had this issue? Thanks.

Edit: the EA help forums seem to have quite a few people with this issue, but no responses. I came across one though who said this issue occurred when he saved in the hinterlands or something. Sure enough, this is where the last 5-6 saves are for my friend. He can load any save that isn't located there just fine. Even more interesting, he loaded up his previous character and whenever he travels to the hinterlands on that one it CTDs as well. He can travel to any other area. It seems as if this issue revolves around that area. I can only imagine it must be patch 2.0 as I've had plenty of hinterland saves without any issues.

In my general experience, save corruption is usually caused by closing a game while it is saving/loading, but it's possible there are other factors at play.

Probably not the answer but worth trying - run repair game just to check it's not some other file that's corrupted.

He said he thinks he may have done this, so that may be the issue then.

I had him do that, it has him currently downloading a 7gb file.

Thanks for the help. Hopefully this works, and if the cause is closing mid save then that should be enough to give peace of mind for continuing to play. He'll just have to be careful not to exit too soon.

Save corruption for me has been from crashes during saving. I don't think such a thing causes crashes in and of itself. You simply aren't able to load the corrupted save at all.

Repairing the game seems to have fixed the issue. That seems to be what caused it, or corrupted the assets of the location that he was saving from/loading into.

It is prevalent enough that people know about it and it has pissed off more than a few people.

It isn't prevalent enough for people to start firebombing Bioware HQ... yet

It seems to be more common on PS3/4 for some reason from what I've seen. They seem to be the only ones on console that have a solution to it as well, their solution doesn't work for xbox corrupted saves according to the posts I read.

I have the game on ps3 and I have to agree with cannibal fan corrupt saves happens when the game AutoSaves and then crashes... doesn't seem to be a problem with main game saves...

There doesn't seem to be a way to turn off autosave and thus remove the problem but avoiding combat and only walking around/reading codex's as the game AutoSaves seems to have reduced the chance of the game crashing for me... hasn't crashed once on my new play though (currently 30 hours in)

Yeah he was looking for a way to toggle off the autosave and to our surprise it wasn't there. That's usually a standard feature in games.

Sounds like your computer may be overheating? Do you have a way to monitor CPU and GPU temps? If that's the issue, making a custom fan profile and/or improving cooling may be the solution to your problem.

I've had a corrupted save once, at the time my hdd was busy because it was right after a judgement cutscene had ended (possibly autosaving?) and I quickloaded at the same time. I don't quickload anymore while my HDD is having difficulties and the problem has never reappeared.

I have not yet experienced any problems myself, but am so pleased you seem to have some solution to it with Repair.

I've actually had a few problems with my hard drive, really glad I didn't run into this issue.

I've had one corrupted save thus far.

Interestingly, the game did display a message on load (or load attempt) that the save was corrupted.

Also interesting, while that one save was corrupted, the game didn't display any of the other saves until I deleted the corrupted one. This was pretty simple for me to figure out and resolve but I imagine some "mainstream users" might have freaked out that all their saves were gone and started ranting to CS or on MetaCritic.

If you go over to the EA boards, the CTD right after loading a save seems a pretty common issue on PC, but unfortunately doesn't have one solution.

I suppose it depends on the pc and/or patch. I haven't had the need to repair myself, and I'm just over 200 hours with 5 playthroughs. Haven't updated to patch 2 though.

Same. Guess we're some of the lucky ones.

My friends was different, it just didn't load. But it seems to have been an issue with corrupted assets that were in use in the Hinterlands than save data corruption. Weird how it would be corrupted though.

I have experience of 'save corruption' on the Xbox one. I'm not sure why it has happened but it did when I started the game online with internet connection and then going offline while playing in the same sitting. Also my internet is very slow so I prefer to play Dragon Age offline. It might be to do with synching issues as my internet was slow to sync my data with the online servers. But I'm still not sure, everything is fine now though.

However when I clicked on the corrupted file, it loaded the last save point and everything seems to be okay again. The other save files were shown and they weren't affected. It was just the most recent save that was affected.
