Can anyone tell me what is supposed to happen after you choose the save folder in the configure utility thing? After I choose the save folder in the bioware\\mass effect folders it just brings me back to the configure menu without doing anything.

For those on PC having probelms with the Config Utility:

Chevythecharmer over at the IGN forums posted this work around so that you can import your ME1 save endgame data without using the Config Utility:

Having the same issue. Tried loading my savegame over, the easy and hard way. No crashes, but it doesn't show any change. Running Vista 64-bit Premium. I'll keep playing around with it (since I beat the game already without a savegame), but it is pretty damned annoying.

I want to know if its related to Vista. I am also running Vista 64-bit home premium. People who are having issues loading the ME1 saves should check your OS. Its possible that Bioware/EA didn't test 64-bit OS' very well or at all.

According to the post from http://boards.ign.co...88860920/p1/?13 it definitely sounds like you need a save file that starts with "Char" in order to do the import...

For those that have tried using both the Configuration Utilty and copying the ME1 saves to the Mass Effect 2\\Saves\\ME1 folder and haven't had success, try the following:

I don't have the game installed anymore, and in my save game folder I didn't have any saves that started with "Char_", which indicates a finished game. So, just to mess around, I took my most recent save game file (which starts with the name of your character, such as Garth00_01 - the most recent save will have the highest number) and changed the name to Char_01 (so, for example, I took Garth00_07 and changed it to Char_01). Then I launched ME2, and lo and behold, my saved game showed up. I tried selecting it, and it did carry over all my info (such as name, rank, decisions) correctly. So, the key here is that ME2 will only recognize save files that start with Char_. You'll want to make sure you use a save file that you know you made after making the final choices in ME1, such as whether or not to save the council. Hopefully this should save people some trouble. I should note that you'll still need to make sure the save file is in the \\\\Mass Effect 2\\\\Saves\\\\ME1 folder, or you can rename the file in the original Mass Effect\\\\Saves folder and then just use the Configure Utility to pull it over.

I bought ME1 from Steam and picked up a copy of ME2 @ Gamestop. Tried going through the ME2 config utility to port over my old character from ME1, and I can't seem to find where it is... Dredged the whole steam folder and can't find it. Anyone else having this problem? Maybe some help, please? And yes, it was a character that had cleared the game once...

After following these steps, it finally worked for me too.

One note though, I used a save file that was not complete, but rather right after I chose to sacrifice Kaiden and Save Ashley. When Mass Effect 2 asked me to confirm my previous game's decisions, everything was intact, except that it said that I decided to let the council die. Apparently the import/conversion process will use whatever data it has in your save file and then fall back to defaults for choices that it can't find in your file.

I went to my newest ME1 Save and finished the campaign. Saved and started a new career with that save. Started new game of ME2 and my save showed up and I imported. I had tried everything listed here and then some. I'm pretty sure you have to finish campaign in ME1 first.

Running WIN 7 Home Premium.

I was able to find the Mass Effect 2 Launcher in C: -> Program Files -> Steam -> steamapps -> Common -> Mass Effect 2
It's the last icon at the bottom.
I was then able to use the launcher to transfer my ME1 files to ME2.

Renaming one of my most recent save-games (To Char_01) allowed ME2 to recognize the files. However, it seems as though it's only recognizing the decisions I've made in the most recent play-through. And since I've only gone partway through, it's defaulting on some of them.

Right.

So here we go: If this was made explicit anywhere I sure as heck didn't see it. But from what I've seen, and someone please correct me if I am wrong

YOU MUST HAVE A COMPLETED GAME SAVE; SAVE GAMES WHERE YOUR CHARACTER DID NOT GO THROUGH THE ENDING WILL NOT TRANSFER TO ME2

Someone shout me down if this isn't true.

Here is the best work around for those that lost their saves either due to a console switch or lost data:

http://www.annakie.com/me/home.htm (taken off of another thread)

It's a repository of save game files - you can still, I think, pick the way your character looks in ME2, but this has a pretty good history of what each character did: I found a darn good match for the decisions I made during ME1 (remember to scroll down for each profile). For those that did complete their saves, there are two files if you drill down to the file structure that are needed - the second file only comes after you hit the ending sequence.

Good luck.

Nothing showed up in ME2 in import until after I downloaded the 2 contents in Cerberus Network (Card inlcuded in ME2 Game box). Then I opened ME2 Menu/Configure/Save Games/Browse. With the Browse option I opened My Documents/Bioware/Save/ME1. I then selcted the OK option in dialog box, it took me back to the ME2 /Copy ME1 Save/, nothing appeared to happen. I opened ME2 Menu again and all my Shepard characters from ME1 were now available for Import. I had played ME1 through to the ending 3 times each with a different Shepard class and name. It worked. Good Luck but this worked for me.

Hey,

Just to confirm, you followed the directions posted in the FAQ (http://masseffect.bi...e.com/info/faq/) under the question "How exactly does the PC Configuration Utility work with ME1 save games?", correct?

Don M

Hm... I looked at the FAQ for info on how to import my saves. I never even though about using the configuration utility. that's kind've an oscure place to put the info. If you knew to look at the config utility, you wouldn't not have to look at the FAQ in the first place.

I will forgive you, though, since the games are so awesome. :)

Once I click the "configuration" button on the launcher, it starts to load, but the halfway through, the whole thing crashes. It says something like "Config.exe has found a problem and had to terminate". Veery irritating...

Wow! Tried to log on again and, wouldn't you know it, it's telling me that the game hasn't been released in New York yet! It's still insisting, despite all available evidence, that it's actually the day before yesterday. Crazy.

So how about telling us what you're doing to fix it, Bioware? Tell us what the problem is? Tell us approximately when it'll be fixed? That would be swell, don't you think?

It seems that you need to have a saved file that starts with "Char_" in the file name, and that perhaps you only get one from a completed game save file. However, you can rename a save file from an incomplete game to something with "Char_" in the front of the file name and it will work as well, even if you haven't beaten the game on that save file.

So renaming the sav file to Char_01 gets ME2 to recognize it as a save game, but I get blackscreen the first time my character has to be rendered.

Furthermore, If i rename it in the ME1 folder and try to use the config tool to import that folder, it crashes.

I'm digressing a little bit here, but it seems evident to me that blizzard has a wicked amount of technical talent working for them, but all the artistic talent that founded all their big franchises are gone. So what WoW has become is this giant pile of SHA1 running auto-fixing exception-handling blob of amorphous code. I always thought that was going to be a detriment to D3 and SC2, but after banging my head against this save-file wall for a few days now... it would be nice if there was some utility I could run to verify (and correct) the integrity of my save file.

That said, even if ME2 is backed by no more than co-production money from EA, I'm sure EA would be ****ing to high hell about any more delays for a "shippable bug" like that.

I'm going to re-download ME1, install it and see if that I open the save piddle around and resave if I can get everything back in order.

Using the config tool didn't seem to work. Nor does copying the files manually.
My Mass Effect 1 saves look like this:

C:/Users/Paul/Documents/BioWare/Mass%20Effect/Save/Char_01-54-3-3-0-15-6-2008-31-55.MassEffectSave
C:/Users/Paul/Documents/BioWare/Mass%20Effect/Save/Char_01-48-1-3-5-4-6-2008-26-42.MassEffectSave
C:/Users/Paul/Documents/BioWare/Mass%20Effect/Save/Char_01-48-1-3-5-3-6-2008-26-49.MassEffectSave
C:/Users/Paul/Documents/BioWare/Mass%20Effect/Save/Char_01-48-1-3-5-15-6-2008-26-42.MassEffectSave
C:/Users/Paul/Documents/BioWare/Mass%20Effect/Save/Char_01-48-1-3-5-15-6-2008-26-56.MassEffectSave
C:/Users/Paul/Documents/BioWare/Mass%20Effect/Save/Char_01-54-3-3-0-15-6-2008-31-55.MassEffectSave

My MassEffect2 directory shows (after using the config tool):
C:/..Documents/BioWare/Mass%20Effect%202/Save/ME1/Char_01-48-1-3-5-3-6-2008-26-49.MassEffectSave
C:/../Documents/BioWare/Mass%20Effect%202/Save/ME1/Char_01-48-1-3-5-4-6-2008-26-42.MassEffectSave
C:/../Documents/BioWare/Mass%20Effect%202/Save/ME1/Char_01-48-1-3-5-15-6-2008-26-42.MassEffectSave
C:/../Documents/BioWare/Mass%20Effect%202/Save/ME1/Char_01-48-1-3-5-15-6-2008-26-56.MassEffectSave
C:/../Documents/BioWare/Mass%20Effect%202/Save/ME1/Char_01-54-3-3-0-15-6-2008-31-55.MassEffectSave

When I run Mass Effect 2 and choose import ME1 character, I see five saves (0 to 4), that have no text in the boxes, and nothing on the right hand pane except a badge/achievement icon of some sort. Clicking on a save and choosing import does nothing.

I am running Win7 x64, I have tried doing the config both as admin  (run the launcher as admin), run the shortcut on my desktop as admin, and just doubleclicking the shortcut for the launcher. I have erased the files that appear in the ME1 folder under mass effect 2's saves folder, after each variation fails in-game.
My game is actually installed on E: if it matters (it shouldn't). My save games are from an old windows xp 32 bit install, but I have also tried manually copying the Char_* files, and taking ownership/forcing profile changes on the whole ME1 subfolder to make sure there's not a security/sharing issue, and no change.

Editing to remove my dissatisfaction with bioware not answering. The answers were so generic I glossed over them, but have to give credit for being in the thread at least twice. :)

Have you guys used the configure tool from the main menu before going into the game, theres an option there to locate the location of your saved games from me1 and copy so that when you use the import function in me2 it will pick up the proper file needed.

Definitely worked for me. Thank you :)

After reading this link, it appears only end game character saves will be imported into ME2, and nothing else, this should have been stated before hand as some haven't completed ME.

Word of warning make sure you have a end game save, it may mean redoing end mission a few times to get it as it sometimes doesn't save correctly.

Now all I have to do is find out why my copy of ME1 (EA Digital download) isn't creating that save!

Ok:

Turns out htere was nothing wrong with the game, only a few things wrong with my save files.

When I setup my SSD raid I lost the mass effect saves, somehow I managed to grab some ancient barely-past-the-first-level saves. For me, at least, theres nothing wrong technically.

So!

My workaround is this:

I imported 2 or three "prefab" saves. If your in my situation, you might want to just find a save as similar as possible to your save and use it. The in game inclusion of some of your choices are nice hints, but again, Bioware wouldn't write 2^7 storylines, so the imported stuff is non-crucial.

Anyways save import site:
