What are the crutch kits?

I've recently solo'ed platinum on Giant again with Asari Adept. Although I'm quite happy that I've finally evolved from using the easiest crutch kits, the AA still has an amazing power, Stasis. I don't know if that qualifies the AA as a crutch kit.

I'm trying to move on from crutch kits altogether, so would like a list of kits that are commonly accepted to be crutches.

I know these to be complete crutches:

Turian Ghost Infiltrator: godlike offensive power, godlike defensive power

Alliance Infiltration Unit: godlike offensive power, godlike defensive power.

Geth Infiltrator: god mode, strong offensive power.

Some kits are borderline crutches in my opinion:

Asari Adept: godlike CC power, easy combo set up, warp debuff works well with warp ammo.

Geth Soldier: strong defensive power, flamer is godlike, but not so strong on some open maps with fewer covers.

Human Soldier: Adrenaline Rush is a versatile power useful in defence and offence, can set off combos?

What in your opinion are crutches for soloing platinum?

For me, all of them.

Seriously you slap a black widow, harrier, ppr, hurricane, talon, arc pistol or one of the half a dozen shotguns on any kit and they become crutch kits for soloing platinum.

You are giving too much credit to Stasis.  It is only amazing against Phantoms, and that has more to do with dropping their DR to 0 than immobilizing them.

Personally I would rank the three "best" solo kits, allowing any weapon as something like:

TGI

Batarian Soldier

Battlemaster

And then other close ones would be

GTS-Flamer

Krogan Soldier

QME

GI is powerful, but it isn't as easy to play as TGI or probably even QMI for a solo.  AIU seems to be overrated a lot.  It is good, but it sure as hell is not because of Repair Matrix, and is possibly the 4th or 5th "best infiltrator."  If you are willing to take a bit more time, you can bump Huntress ahead of both for ease.

Human Soldier is ok, but isn't nearly as good as most infiltrators unless you are going against Cerberus on a very grenade friendly map.  It is way behind the inferno grenade soldiers, GTS, Destroyer, and potentially Havoc depending on faction, and MM characters depending on map.

I would have a hard time picking AA over HA, PA, DA, KA, ACA and Fury for the adepts.

What do you mean with "god mode," when you're talking about the GI? Because I tell ya, that guy - should he get hit - drops to the floor. Given that people rarely put any points in his fitness, I'd say the GI isn't exactly more "god mode" than any other character with Tac Cloak. But please elaborate...

As for crutch kit, it also depends on how people use the kit. The Talon Merc is a great example in this regard. The Cain Mine spammers - disliked by many, including me - can be VERY overpowered. But that doesn't mean that everyone spams mines, whenever they are playing this kit. So, the mentality of the player is a great factor here.

The Drell Adept with the Venom can be very cheesy, as well. His brother the Vanguard in some hands, as well. But it's just a matter of how you use them. As FasterThanFTL said, weapons are an important factor. A Drell Adept with a weapon that has a staggering capability will be 10x as deadly as one that lacks in this department.

Then it seems I'm already off the crutches.

Why is Batarian Soldier good for solo? It has no outstanding defensive ability or an enormous amount of damage output.

I mainly like Human soldier for Adrenaline Rush which give damage boost, damage reduction, shield recharge and it stops some DoT. Frag Grenades are undoubted the worst grenade there is.

I rate AIU highly mainly because it's not as punishing on mistakes as many other kits without Matrix. The cloak damage on shotguns is great also.

I refer to Hunter Mode as god mode because, in the old days, before all the new kits and weapons came out, just after the official release of the game. There were only 2 insanely good kits, AA and GI. People spoke of Hunter Mode, Stasis and Cloak as god mode powers. Stasis was considered god mode back then because there weren't many easy ways of dealing with Phantoms. Now an Acolyte will do. Times have changed, by my lexicon hasn't.

Hmmm.

You have Blade Armor (DR), Ballistic Blades (Stagger) and high base shields.

You have inferno Grenades, which when used with IA gives you one of the most powerful damaging interactions to exploit.

As for AIU, Repair Matrix does not help you nearly as much as Stim Packs.  Getting I-frames and massive shields is much more helpful than auto-revives.  High base shields and DR probably are as well.

Hunter Mode is a great ability, but it comes down mostly to accuracy and speed buffs now that every character can get the vision through gear.

Top crutches characters for me : TGI, AIU, Geth Soldier, Geth Juggernaut.

In a second group, I would put GI, batarian soldier, krogan vanguard and Cabal. I agree with capn that solos with the batsol and the kroguard are pretty easy, but I didn't put them in the first group because they are syncable and don't have a dodge.

I, admittedly, posted also to stop PHOEN1XK1NG's series (more than 20 threads with him as last poster a few minutes ago ).

Its alright, he's just saying "Happy New Year" in all of them. ;)

I just got ME3 for PC a few days ago, so I haven't unlocked all these seemingly awesome kits and weapons peeps be talking about, but I do enjoy my N7 Destroyer with Revenant (I adore this gun. Loved it in ME2 and love it in ME3MP) I got yesterday. Probably not the most powerful character, since he just has passives and grenades (that I didn't take. Although I just hit 20, so I might check them out next time) but I'm enjoying it.

I also unlocked the N7 Typhoon, but I don't like it very much...is there something wrong with me or is that weapon just not as good as the Revenant (both are only 1, of course)?

^I encourage you to persevere with the Typhoon, it's an awesome weapon, way better than the Revenant.

Hell yeah, don't see BatSol mentioned next to TGI as a clutch kit very often, but he's such a bad mofo.

I suck with it, but endless dakka with the Typhoon Tsol has got to be one of the funnest kits in the game.

Incendiary cheese with inferno 'nades, Ballistic Blades- two staggers per cooldown (one on impact, one from explosive blades), high health/shields plus DR.. So yes, he's got the damage output covered (Inferno Grenade+Venom doubletap= bye bye, spawn), and with DR from blade armor and melee, plus the ability to stagger even without a stagger weapon, he's got the survivability. Probably one of the easiest solo kits after the infiltrators with shield-restoring powerss (AIU and TGI), IMO.

Thanks for the encouragement, I'll give 'er another go. It just seemed like I was dropping baddies faster with the Rev, but that may have just been my boundless joy at hearing the thing fire. Cheers~

You're welcome. If you were using the same level of equipment, it was likely an impression, the Typhoon has a better dps than the Revenant. You can look at this thread if you want to give a more precise look at the stats.

Of course, when I said that the Typhoon is awesome, I should have precised that it's true only with certain characters. Due to its weight and the ramp-up mechanism, it is not a weapon well suited for characters who perform well when they spam powers every 2.5-3 seconds. So it's a "great niche gun" for turian soldier, Destroyer, etc.

Of course you were. You can kill an entire spawn with one of those things.

Yeah, I loved the Rev on ME2, but its a shell of itself on ME3. The damage output between the Revenant and the Typhoon is pretty stark- the Typhoon is one of the highest DPS assault rifles (should be behind only the Harrier and the PPR, IIRC). Try it on the Destroyer or TSol. Flamer-less Geth Trooper is also a good one (with Drill rounds III  ^_^ )

The Juggernaut is a crutch...but I think it's a terrible soloing kit (at least higher than silver)

I've done gold solos with the jug vs Cerberus and Geth, it works ok. Human soldier can be super op vs organics if you set it up right, no adrenaline rush. Volus are op with shield boost and two cloaks.

Yeah I actually like him quite a bit for solos- but Glacier and AM III are musts.
