I don't consider the SI to be a "crutch" as it certainly is more difficult to master than the TGI etc.

 

Really?  Cuz it's not that hard.  Equip heavy, powerful weapon.  Cloak and ED on barriers/shields/mooks for easy headshots.  Proxy mine and shoot everything else.  Proceed to roflstomp over everything.  SI Claymore with the Crutch Scanner is basically invincible and while maybe isn't quite as braindead as the TGI, certainly nears his damage output and survivability in even mildly competent hands.

 

Hell, I took an SI Mantis to Gold a few matches ago, and just wrecked everything.  75+ sniper kills, 20 headshots, revives...gold medals everywhere.  And I'm hardly a top tier player of this game.

I agree, SI is super easy mode, even if its not quite on the level of TGI. Still an awesome kit, though.

Now take a SI with Mantis to Platinum, and you'll know just how strong this kit is.

That's what I had to roll with for a while when I first started my alt account, Mantis FQI (then I got a Crusader  ). Totally feasible on Gold. Especially when you at least have some AP mods or some ammo to use, and the Mantis leveled up (which I obviously didn't, for a while- forgot what that's like ).. I remember I had to clutch the last few enemies on a Reapers/Condor with Mantis I in one of my very first games on the account and some shocked PUG (since I had maybe 15 CP at the time) sent me a msg about it.

On gold yes, but all kits are quite easy to play up to gold.

You don't see many inexperienced players/scrubs running around platinum with the SI, almost all of them use TGI, I'm pretty sure Biovar created the TGI kit for one reason only, making the highest difficulty levels accessible for as many players as possible, as such I fully agree that TGI/AIU are crutches, but SI on platinum is not (just my opinion though!)

SI/Raider used to be my default platinum kit ... back when I bothered to play platinum.

Meh, soloing plat is hard period but there's probably 10 to 20 people that could solo that combo easily on their first try if not grinding for time. I think Max D has done that solo a couple of times.

 

Armored compartments plus Piercing and wall hax.
