He will suck with your pre-requisites.

Why is he intended to have battlemaster? He sucks with battlemaster. Nothing says he needs battlemaster.

Get Block and slash, challenge, and bullrush. Now he has tons of guard and he can deflect enemy attacks. Set all of these to preferred.

Go reaver all the way down, and go all the way down the left side of two-handed.

Ranged AI runs into melee and dies, dual-wield AI is super squishy and dies. Bull has guard, and heavy armor and high DPS. I'm starting to turn my opinion on him entirely. Hes one of the best AI characters.

I'm currently running a high crit party with darius, varric, and bull with me as their tank. Bull does just fine. Hell, he does more then fine. He runs in, makes a tremoundous mess of the battlefield, and if he gets hurt he is even stronger. Even if he dies I know he still returned the favor on the enemy ten fold.

Too many people rate their companions skills entirely on survival. Oh, my companion didn't die, therefore he/she is the best. Nevermind what actual contribution they made to the battle in the interum.

I assume battlemaster is meant to be for him instead of vanguard because battlemaster has all +strenght passives, which seems to be the way the character was meant to be built. That being said, block and slash as preferred sounds like it should make him better. I'll definitely start with that. And yes, I guess I'll just have to give him some vanguard skills.

Ranged AI only rushed into melee if they are set to follow the controlled character. If you set them to follow themselves they (most of the time) stay away. And I assume that by "darius" you meant "Dorian", right?

Build Iron Bull a guard on hit weapon, he is pretty bad ass.

This also sounds like it should work. I'll try to craft a guard on hit 2 hand weapon and give it to him.

Thanks for the tips.

He needs to generate guard and have high health pool. Put points into skills that bring up his constitution and create Guard.
War Cry, Challenging Shout, Charging Bull should be all he needs.
You'll have to go down the Sword/Shield spec to get the best survival/constitution skills.
So you really want a mix between Sword/Shield, Two-Handed skill trees. I know it seems odd but it's the only way he will be
a beast in Nightmare.

Don't even bother putting anything into Reaver Tree... the AI in DAI is so retarded he can't even play his own tree... how sad is that?

He can't take reaver skills if he is using war cry to taunt everything into attacking him. You don't need sword and shield skills, you just can't make him act like he is a sword and shield.

Use bull rush instead of war cry. Full reaver.

Bullrush on AI? Good luck with that.

If you cherrypick abilities out of the Vanguard tree that increase his armor and guard, it helps a lot.  Basically, whatever you do, he *must* have a decent number of abilities that increase his guard.

He kept dying ridiculously fast in normal for me and then I realized I'd given him some ridiculous club that ups damage by 10% but increases damage taken by a 100%. He's better now.

It works fine. Its not good for the tank because they will lose aggro sometimes, for ironbull thats exactly what you want anyway. He knocks down everyone, loses agro, and gains guard. I set it to preferred. I haven't run into a single problem with the AI using this.

One good thing about speccing Bull as a Sword & Shield user is that you can effectively ignore his Reaver line of abilities.

How is not having a specialization a positive? Simple. Unlike Cassandra and Blackwack, he can invest heavily into the battlemaster tree without sacrificing other areas of the build.  Upgraded Horn Of Valour for the win!

Gave him +25% heal on kill and on hit armor generation, set devour and guard generating skills on preferred and voilà. Barrier helps too.
