Lore or gameplay?
Lore, Cassandra would wipe the floor with Blackwall.
Gameplay, depends on how you spec'em, but Champion is better than Templar at tanking.

Lore Cass wins.
Gameplay Wall wins.
I just want the weakeness stacking bug to gtfo though.

However, for durability, S&S wins easily over 2H from what little I did witness.

Assuming both are spec'd as S&S since its AI is superior to 2H, I would say that Blackwall objectively wins when it comes to just game play.
But I vastly prefer Cassandra as a character and she's close enough to Blackwall's level that I don't feel like I have to use him instead.

Cassandra is a great tank, but Blackwall is a FANTASTIC tank. The Champion spec makes him functionally immortal if you're paying any attention at all.
During my first run he killed the Red Lyrium Dragon virtually single-handed after everyone else drank all the potions and fell over two minutes into the fight. It was so plot appropriate that I like to think there are tavern songs about it.

The thread. +5
I love Cassandra to death, but Blackwall has the champion specialization. That automatically makes him the best warrior in the entire cast, next to you. He even has the potential to be a better tank than you due to his skills not being diluted with player character stuff, especially if you're like me and select armor for looks rather than stats.
Lorewise, Cassandra fought dragons... Cassandra wins.

Cassie's a Seeker...
But Blackwall is THE WALL.
Enemies are up againist a wall, and HE'S THE F...ING WALL!
That said, Cassie can combine and switch into offensive easier, I'd say, thanks to dispelling and other Templar abilities.
Even so, one does not simply breach THE WALL and lives to tell about it.

Champion is better than Templar in tanking. However the AI plays much better with Templar, so for potatoes who don't want to use tactical camera or switch controls Cass is actually the better tank. Otherwise Blackwall is the wall.

Blackwall is the better tank.
Cassandra has unusable lore abilities.

Both of them are good enough Tanks with the standard talents, so I feel Templar adds more

Short version of my Emerald Graves adventure: I had to deal with 4-6 giants in a row, and Blackwall saved the group by finishing off the last giant after the rest of the group got pancaked. After that display of prowess, he's always been my go-to tank (and it's not just because he's got LI status - lol).
Early on, I would swap between Blackwall and Cass, but I find the Champion abilities are more useful when I'm playing a squishy mage. Although since I'm a KE on my current Nightmare playthrough, I'm not really that squishy this time - lol.

For gameplay reasons only, Blackwall. Champion is an awesome tank spec, and when I use Vivienne and her endless barriers he becomes immortal.

Gameplay wise? Blackwall. Just Blackwall. He was the MVP in all of the toughest fights.

That said for dragon hunting, they both stay at Skyhold.

I prefer Cass since she can set up and set off detonations but Blackwall is the better tank.

Sera, Varric, Cole and RogueQuisitor?

Lore wise, I actually don't know. Both are great warriors, veterans, Blackwall being good enough to impress a Warden Constable and a Chevalier (when he was just a boy, at that) and Cassandra being a Seeker from a dragon hunting family. She kinda confirmed Dawn of the Seeker was an exaggerated retelling of events, so not going to take that ridiculousness into account.
Cassandra started Seeker training at six years old. And she has Fade powers granted by a spirit of Faith. She's the closest you'll get to a Spirit Warrior without possession.
She destroys Blackwall. Only companions from any of the games that could make her sweat would be Loghain with prep time or the current Arishok (Sten).

Lore wise, Blackwall don't want to practice with Cassandra because he gets too many bruises in the process. They have banter about it.
