So my question is a two-parter:

  • Are the combat mechanics different for a follower with the same class and specialization than they are for the Inquisitor.  So, for instance, can I respec Cole as an archer, using a good "assassin archer" guide for designed for the Inquisitor?  Or are Cole's combat mechanics calculated differently?
  • Will Iron Bull always be hampered as a tank by his Reaver specialization?  As someone who's tried (clumsily) to build Sword & Shield tank reavers in both Origins and Dragon Age 2, I know there are serious problems with trying to balance a job built for the adrenaline rush of low hit points with a function whose goal is to avoid low hit points.

The context of this is that after two playthroughs on normal I've just switched to "hard."  I'm pretty terrible at combat generally.  But I'd also like to put Iron Bull and Cole as much in the party as possible because they'd fit this particular Inquisitor and because I like both characters and was sad I couldn't use them much because of game mechanics.

I got decently good on normal with a tank/archer/mage/mage combo, and I'd like to see if I can make that work with different characters.

Sword and Shield still works well as DPS, and on Nightmare is probably preferable for Bull.  He still isn't necessarily a decent tank unless you are going high DPS yourself (I managed to use him as a 2H Reaver tank on my assassin Rogue, but that's because she can one-shot most enemies).  On my champion I made Bull a sword and board DPS, he's very capable but still fairly durable.

The AI is terrible at playing Dual Wield rogue, Cole the Assassin Archer is pretty damned good though, Mark of Death and Hidden Blades are both ranged attacks anyways.

Yeah, I've decided that Cole will just have to be an archer in all my future games. I like to control my own character and let the AI run the rest of the party most of the time, and it just can't handle dual-wielding rogues. All he does is suck down potions and die. Fortunately, Assassins make great archers so it all works out well. And it's not a situation like Sera or Varric where I feel like swapping weapon types would be out of character.

I shouldn't have too much trouble with Bull on sword and shield on hard mode, then, even with my own poor combat skills.  I'll have three characters built for DPS.  All bull has to do is attract trouble and soak damage.  He does the first part naturally, so I just have to manage the second.

I found the key to a reaver tank in other games was to shut off aura of pain, and maximize devour.  In this game, it looks like it's dragon rage which is the ability to diable, not ring of pain, and still maximize devour.  In fact, ring of pain improves devour, so it should be active.

I have been playing a DPS warrior for my inquisitor and I wanted to bring Cole along, but the AI just cannot manage the micro needed to play Dual wield rogue correctly. He works extremely well as an archer. You can switch any companion it just comes down to how well their specialization melds with the combat style you want them to perform.

You'll be fine on Hard. This game is easy, I quit my first run to start over on Nightmare because Hard was such a letdown.

For DW rogue AI, giving them Parry and ensuring stamina reserve set to 0% so they'll always use it helps greatly against melee enemies. This (along with the other "counter" type abilities on warriors) is basically the only ability I trust the AI to use, times it perfectly with no exceptions in my experience. Sadly it doesn't work against ranged attacks though, so you still have to babysit against arrows and magic.
