A lot of the notes around Skyhold indicate that it has a lot of history and that it was built for something 'big'. Some of the notes indicate that it was rebuilt more than once over vast expanses of time. Another note in the underforge hints that the construction of this area was for something special or different. Obviously Solas knows more about Skyhold than he's letting on. Any ideas out there regarding its history? Do you think more will be revealed in upcoming DLC?
Something more to Skyhold?

Both Morrigan and some codex entries say it was a special place for the Elves before humans rebuilt what they did atop it, though exactly what it was used for was never clearly elaborated upon. Personally? I think it's where Solas fell into his long slumber, somewhere deep in the bowls of the mountain, and he awoke to find the abandoned fortress built over his resting place. It would explain why he knew it was still unoccupied and why it would be good for the Inquisition. That and why I'm rather too tired to remember what it was exactly, the original elvhen name was quite fitting, almost as if it was tailor made for the Inquisitor with their anchor.

Interesting. I'm curious as to what made it special to the elves. The notes also seem to indicate that the construction of the fortress is special somehow.
ETA: I also find it odd that so much can grow inside the fortress. Afterall, the place is surrounded by snowy mountains; not the best climate for gardens.

I severely disappointed that Skyhold wasn't attacked during the game. That fortress was begging for siege .
I agree. Although, I hated the thought of all my hard work (3 whole additions) being demolished, lol!

Yeah but just imagine if they actullay had a purpose during the batte. Like if you constructed a Templar tower you could call in Templar knights to help you fight. Like Awakening.

Look at the location, then Solas tells you that Arlthan was once the center of Elvenhan, the world. Perhaps that is more litteral that we realize and, the site that is Skyhold, -Tarasyl'an te'las - The placew where the sky was held back. Now there is that fragment of an ancient Tevinter relief that looks like the main gate as well. Solas knows of the place.
So, odds are it was a part of Elvenhan, if not Arlathan proper, close to it I would think. Tevinter also knew of it. Solas seems to know Corepheus, or at least knew he could unlock the orb so, we assume Solas knows Cory, or knew him when he was a human. Is Skyhold the site used by the magisters to breach the Black City, then the elves used magic to prevent the corruption from affecting them in that place. "The magic has seep into the stones protects this place from darkness." Elven magic that keeps anything blighted or corrupted away from the place? Is that why Solas knew the Inquisition could grow and would be safe there? Was he present when the first wards were cast in Skyhold? Or was it a refuge the elves warded to protect what few were left form the new blight, a last hope to save something of Elvenhan?
I assume that's why Skyhold is never attacked - it can't be attacked, it has a very old, very unique and special magic protecting it.
Is that something still there? Could Skyhold still be the place to usher in the rebirth of Elvenhan? Will it matter if your inquisitor is a mage or Dalish, or both? Is it for DLC or DA4? it would be a fascinating story to play.

Love this post! You've hit the nail on the head; something is magical about this place.

Its something that translates as the place that holds up the sky and Morrigan notes that ancient protective magic had sunk into the very stones of Skyhold. It was part of noting why besides being in such a nightmarish place to try to assault it would be a bad idea for Corypheus to attack Skyhold as if the fortifications, the location being an nightmare to bring a army as well any siege equipment to bear and limited avenues for assault wasn't enough.

Another possibility is that Skyhold is where the Veil was constructed. There have been quite a few hints that the Veil may not be a natural barrier. If the ancient elves built it to keep the spirits at bay (or if it was built to trap/contain the elven pantheon), then it may very well have been constructed at Skyhold. That would even fit with the translated name, The Place Where the Sky is Held Up (iirc).

Also begging for more upgrades. So many broken walls and empty rooms with overgrowth in them. I would have liked to see a lot more progression in the upgrading and defense of Skyhold.

Or maybe it was the site of Elgar'nan's birth.

Skyhold should be totally repaired. Things like holes in the roof, broken walls, areas not being occupied by your forces, that sort of thing. One of my advisors, Cullen, sleeps in a loft with a hole in the roof. WTF? How does that look to people you are trying to sway to your side when you have an advisor's room that has a hole in the roof and the wall is crumbled apart on your way to the War Room?

I'm on my second playthrough and went to the Temple of Mythal when I noticed this statue:
The interesting part is that you can find this statue in the garden at Skyhold as well:
Please excuse my bad phone pictures.

Well the Skyhold codex certainly seems to suggest there's more to it than meets the eye:
http://dragonage.wik...try:_On_Skyhold
And if Solas really is intent on bringing back his people and/or merging the Fade and the real world together (like he was seemingly hinting at in Haven) then perhaps he had an ulterior motive for sending us there... after all, the Inquisitor is literally the anchor/key, especially now his orb is broken and presumably useless. I won't be surprised if he's letting the Inquisitor build up power so that he can utilise it eventually when he finally puts his plans into action.

There's also an arrow you can find on one of the roofs over the garden that seems to suggest Skyhold was assaulted by elves centuries ago.

Elgar'nan, six years in this place, and I still can't fix the holes in the roof.

Perhaps some ancient protective magic is also why we discover blocks/bricks/materials stolen from other regions used in the building of Skyhold. Interesting.
