Man, I hate this question. I always suck at answering this because I love everyone and like to cycle between squadmates.

But mission-wise, I choose these guys: Miranda (Sentinel powers like Overload and Warp), Garrus (Versatile soldier with Overload, proximity bomb, and Concussion), Grunt (he's an angry wall of melee attacks. great cannon fodder), Thane (good for varying biotic detonations and sniper, along with Garrus), and Samara (biotic prowess and usage of assault rifles)

When it comes to my most used squadmates it's definitely Miranda and Thane. Thanks to Miranda's squad helping skills, Thane gets a nifty +65% gun damage. With a sniper rifle that's really painful for the enemies. They also both have Warp which is always handy, Miranda has Overload and Thane can do some crowd control with Throw and Miranda with Slam. 

 

When it comes to favorite characters it gets a lot more difficult to decide but I'm leaning towards Legion as #1.

Garrus and Grunt mainly, but also Mordin (he's a coldblooded killer at heart, hehe).

I want squadmates who are just ready to pull off some badassery.

Depends on the mission and what class Shep is. For a non-biotic Shep, I generally like to bring Thane and Samara for missions involving the Collectors. For any geth/mech things, either Tali and Legion, Tali and Garrus, or Garrus and Miranda, depending on where in the plot I am. For bringing down mercs, usually Garrus and Zaeed. For everything else... Garrus when possible, Grunt when I feel like it, Thane if Shep is infiltrator and I want a classy sniper team. For most loyalty missions, I bring either Garrus or Samara.

 

I basically never use Jacob, Jack or Mordin. They aren't interesting/useful to me.

 

And I don't have the DLC, so no Kasumi.
