Not sure which specialization works best for Archers. Thoughts?

They all have broken stuff. Ironically I found assassin the best as it seems to have a lot of ranged abilities, so you don't have to interrupt firing and get close to use its tools. Artificer traps meanwhile (once again, quite strangely since it's Varric's spec) are short range and often can't reach enemies if you keep your distance like an archer should be. The Artificer focus ability does work specifically with archery, though, so there's that.

Tempest has great burst damage, can freeze time, and can grant 85% damage resistance while freezing attackers.

Artifacer gets great continuous damage as it can reduce its cooldowns everytime anyone in the party scores a crit, they also provide party-wide buffs, and have a few cool utilities.

Assassin, I never really played yet for an archer.

If your looking for a clear best, be prepared for long debates and ultimate disappointment :P

Its about the three flasks it gets as abilities, and they work just like any other ability. No limited number, or need to resupply.

Each flask lasts 5 seconds, and a passive gives another 3 seconds on a second successive flask (it doesn't seem to stack beyond that from what I saw).

  • The fire flask will allow you to use abilities with no cooldown or cost for 5 seconds.
  • The ice flask will cause enemies who attack you to become frozen for a couple seconds, and give you 85% damage resistance.
  • The lightning flask will freeze time. The upgrade completely freezes time.

I used a tempest as a DW rogue, and it was stupid strong. I mean seriously. Holy crap. I espesially liked spamming stealth strike and throwing daggers. I could throw 5-6 rounds of daggers at targets with one fire flask. I thought it was really cool having a melee rogue that was perfectly capable of delivering powerful ranged attacks when needed.

So now I think, you know what would be cool?

What if an archer picked up stealth strike with tempest?

Now your an archer picking away at targets at range all happy like, but you can also deliver 5 stealth strike melee attacks in succession on demand.

I dunno, the possibilities are endless when your talking about a class that can freeze time.

BUT

The other specs are AT LEAST nearly as strong. For my third playthrough I am definitely trying out an artificer rogue with a high crit chance.

Tempest as DPS Archer or Artificer as a CC Archer.

I think I'm going to eventually go back and run a warriorless group (after I memorize all the bash locations) with a Tempest Rouge/Dual Dagger,  Varric can stay close with his passives and traps.  Cole can respec as an archer and I can run Solas to pull enemies together

Descriptions are misleading. The Tempests' flasks aren't tonics nor grenades, they are normal abilities.

Personally I'd recommend Assassination or Artificer. Assassination gives very fun abilities (Mark of Death and Hidden Blades are my favorites) and it also works great with daggers if you want to give that a shot at a certain point. Artificer if you get high cries (easier at late-game) because of high stamina regen and reduced cooldowns.

Nothing wrong with Tempest. But I prefer a tempest when it's controlled by AI because of flask of lightning (when you use flask of lightning you stop time, when your party mate stops time, it looks like they're on super-speed mode).

I'd probably suggest going assassination, and having varric in your party for artificer. The synergy between assassin's high crit rates and artificers buffs and passives is crazy. If your assassin does their Mark of Death burst sequence, and at the same time you have the Artificer use his focus skill, you have one of the craziest combos in the game.

having multiple mages in the party is better than anything

Archer is like a mage, which is to say that all three specializations fit the class perfectly.

My pick of the bunch? Tempest. Simply because it works well with both daggers and bows, letting you re-spec if you get bored.
