I wish I was smart enough to use game toolsets to make original content/expansions! I've seen some of the story stuff people have done with Skyrim and it looks awesome :D sadly RPGmaker XP was about the level of difficulty suited to me in that area.

Really and truthfully, IIRC, Origins had a toolset.  Were someone ambitious enough, and didn't want to make money off of it, they could have expanded the game to their hearts content.  The problem with it was understanding the toolset (it was pretty complicated, IMO).

i don't think DA2 wanted to be any of the mass effects... but it did go in a more action oriented direction, similar to the transition from ME1 to ME2

personally i wish people would stop bashing DA2 altogether, the issues people pick with it really aren't that big a deal and it got more flak than it deserved

It (DA2) is my least favorite out of the three, but I will say that if looked at objectively, without comparing it to Origins or Inquisition, it is a decent game.  The problem a lot of people had with it is that it was advertised as the sequel to DA:O.  Had they advertised it as more of a parallel story, or something to that effect, it might have had a better reception.  This, however, was obviously not the case.

I tried using the Origins toolset (bought the PC version of Origins for this reason when I already had the 360 version) and was able to make a pretty map, but my laptop had some kind of compatibility issue with it and I was not able to test play. Doing anything else was super confusing to me as well and there wasn't much help/resources available. :(

I really hope the combat of origins never comes back. That may have worked for PC players but some prefer the real time combat, kind of like Kingdom Hearts for ex. For being unplayable on previous gen, that should have been obvious. Sure the PS3 and 360 still have life left in them but games are being made now where they favor next gen. It doesn't make it right but people should've saw it coming

That's the summary of my own experience, tbh...I did attempt to learn it on my own, but most of the things I created would not work with the game.  The sad thing is, I can use tools like 3dsmax and Blender just fine.  It seemed to me to be a ploy to make game design appear so much more complicated than it really is.

Whereas the Oblivion toolset (skyrim's predecessor) was incredibly useful.

Sadly, D:OS is not a great replacement for the DAO2 we all wanted.  It's turn based and has last-gen, cartoony graphics.  It's definitely not a AAA game.

Also, I think most people have come around to the voiced protagonist.  I've personally always enjoyed it; voicing the player character would be one of the few ways to make Origins even better.

Hopefully the next Dragon Age game can marry the best aspects of DAO, DA2, and DAI.

DAO:  The base game.

DA2:  Brought in tighter combat, though it was a bit over-the-top.  Tried to create a unique narrative style for RPGs that wasn't just the "save the world from the ancient evil" story.  Obviously introduced protagonist voice acting to the series.

DAI:  Toned the combat down a bit (no more exploding blood sacks).  Introduced large, graphically impressive environments.  Added Qunari as a playable race and offered two voices per gender (though I could take this or leave this if scrapping it could give more time to fixing DAI's shortcomings).

If it was advertised as a parallel story, that would only really be a half-truth of sorts, since the only part of the game that happens parallel to Origins is the prologue, and then we fast forward to the end of the Blight.

Yes, but, IMO, anything other than "sequel to DA:O" would have been better.

Just buy divinity original sin, learn modding and use the toolset to mod it to your heart content, you can import assets too, so i guess you could import EVERYONE from all games and make you own story, plus four player coop party, i just don't know if with moding you can skip the turn based combat, but very likely.

So you're actually saying that if I don't like a story, I. should write my own?
I am sure I will really enjoy the plot twists of my own story. And romance the characters I've written my self. Naaaw, that doesn't feel like mental mast0rbation at all.

I liked the combat system in Divinity, but the story and characters were so boring that I stopped in act 2. I'd pay a lot of money for a DA game with Divinity's combat system.

If you're going to buy Divinity, why not play Divinity.  I've always dug the Divinity Storyline.  Will be checking that game out soon.

Dragon Age is no longer the franchise for me. I love DA:O and I appreciate DA2, but DO:I feels so different, is not a bad game, but it doesn't feel right for me.

D:OS on the other hand feels more like the game I was looking for, it's maybe not a AAA game, but I enjoyed it alot more than DA:I

I forget who it was exactly btu Bioware basiaclly said, in reference to DA:O that "they've already done that".

Jokes on them. People want a a game like DA:O. All they had to do was elaborate on the DA:O formula but it takes too long and EA wants their devs to bust out a game a year. That's the reason. They're the blight of the industry. Our only hope for another DA:O-like game is Beadog making a new Baulder's Gate game.

i keep hearing that we the customer asked for this... i don't recall asking them to trash the one thing that made the dragon age franchise a unique and enjoyable experience

I don't begrudge BioWare for trying new things.  I really like the larger maps, aesthetically, though Hinterlands can get a bit boring.  I just think the game would be immensely better if they cut out, say, the Exalted Plains and the Hissing Wastes and used that time to either add more meaningful side quests in other zones or improve some of the existing side quests.

Ideally, every zone would have a major storyline, full of cutscenes and interesting dialog choices, that is tied into the main story in some way.  Also ideally would be a few side quests with these same qualities, though I'm willing to trade some cutscenes in side quests for some exploration, because that did add a lot to the game.

The issue will be if BioWare sees the success of DAI (at least, compared to DA2) and just go forward with the exact same model of bland side quests and minimal cutscenes.

We'll probably never see a game like DAO by Bioware again. In terms of characters, story and plot twists, it was Bioware best and most engaging to me.

Oh indeed, it's completely impractical and just begging for a "cease and desist" demand from EA's phalanx of corporate vampires lawyers. I was just daydreaming about what some sort of collaboration between Bioware and Larian might produce.

Highly doubtful as long as the modders don't seek to charge money for such a game and clearly label it as a fan project. EA would have to demonstrate a financial loss, or damage to their brand to successfully sue anyone using their assets for a fan project.
