I don't think being part of a larger plan keeps that one part from being a deus ex machina. I also wouldn't call Flemeth's plan a Xanatos Roulette, as she seems to have some ability to see the future. She knew that Jory would not survive his joining. In order for the DR to be something the Warden's would consider, she must also know about how the Old Gods, Archdemons, and the Wardens' sacrifice.

If they knew it was a possibility and planned for it, then it's not a deus ex machina by definition.

What happens at the end solves a different problem than what they had been planning for. I won't get into the details, but if you consider it a deus ex machina, it serves to illustrate a major point of the novel.

In DAI, one does not have to do everything either. Simply focus on the short and long range goals of the Inquisition and their leader, then accept or skip the rest as desired. The enjoyment is generally under the control of the Player. If one is becoming frustrated or annoyed at some mechanical issue, step away and refresh themselves; return later with an objective in both plan and attitude. This game nor others dictate how one will be happy or sad; that is always in control of the Player, and the choice they make on how to react to it.

Excellent point. As a completionist I feel compelled to do everything on the first playthrough at least. This included feeling I had to do all the available maps before progressing to story quests like choosing a faction to side with, or later taking said faction to do X. After completing Hinterlands and another map I was bored to tears!

That drove me to just get on and do the main story quest, which made the game instantly fun again. I now balance it by doing big fat chunks of map exploration (because I still have to do everything at least once! ) and then doing a personal quest or main story when things get really boring. Problem solved!

Divinity should have been at the top along with Wasteland 2. Those were the best RPG's of 2014.

Okay, so I like Divinity, but...just no.  It has no business being GOTY.  For God's sake, you can see the seams in the character models (something I noticed when under advanced options for the character creator).  And, if I have to reload a save ONE more time because the game I just loaded up spawned a character inside a rock, I'm going to physically remove my hard drive and destroy it.  (not really).  Yeah, it's ambitious, but so heavily flawed that it still feels like I'm playing a beta version.

It's only a great game for the consoles, it sucks for PC.

I'm a PC gamer.  I happen to own a copy for my PC and my PS4.  It's not very different between those two platforms (aside from PC bugs being numerically superior).  Doesn't make it a terrible game, IMO, just some stuff to work on.

Angry Joe played it with a controller, had I done that too I would also have rated it the best game of the year.

But since I'm on pc with m/kb, not so much <_<

Why do people keep saying this? Regardless of all the issues with KBM, controller is even worse. You have all of the same problems in combat in terms of control and camera. Except you don't have a mouse. And instead of being forced to use a clunky UI that doesn't take advantage of the mouse you're forced to use a UI that can only work via the equivalent of WASD.

How is it better in any way?

Angry Joe is and has been a sell out for a very long time. I'm surprised he actually gave an honest opinion on Rome 2.

If a game played on PC HAS to be played with a controller then the game is just "a bad console port" and I don't give a "s**t" what people say.

There are games released where KB&M works as well as controller so it CAN be done!!

Developers just p**s on one or the other side of the fence. Mostly it's the PC side...  And that just shows how lazy they are...

didn't try Witcher with the controller but I heard that it plays well, but the games I tried with xbox controller (Tomb Raider and Shadow of Mordor) are excellent, especially Tomb Raider.

If someone wants to make a game that works fine on all platforms then the game will be fine on all platforms...

There's plenty of games that works fine with both controlling ways and I think Deus EX HR is one of them, you play on KB&M, plug in the controller and the UI changes with no restart needed, it's just there.

Have you tried it in DAI?   I know it does work but you have to go main menu level and play with settings...

Yes, I'm moaning right now (6 beers and 0,3l of whiskey takes its toll) but really, there are developers that wants to do good optimisation and there are the ones that don't give a ****...

You would rather they did it for free?

If you look at the Bioware site, under careers, you can see what their employee benefits are and, IMO, WHY they need to make as much money as they can.

Gotta get that free breakfast.

they should do it in their development time, it will pay off more in the long run.

look at Baldurs Gate, KotOR and NWN, those games are brilliant, and then look at what happened to ME3 and all DA series...

I think Origins is better than any Bioware game, and Inquisition is better than any of those you listed but BG2 (KOTORs not too far behind however). I also play on PC exclusively with KB&M since 8 years.

I wonder where I fit in your definition of the world.

I tried the controller. It's worse on every level. I don't understand how anyone could think that KBM is worse. Even though the PC UI is subpar.

From what I remember (and my memory isn't that good), the only one (out of BG, KotOR and NWN) that actually didn't have a huge fan outcry on the forums (pre-bsn) was NWN.  The others received the same "boo-hoo" this isn't that.  While I do agree that those are generally accepted as RPG staples.

Origins was a fantastic game, but RPG wise, not so much.  It was more of a way to transition Bioware fans into Fantasy/action with RPG elements.  Elements that are slowly being removed.  Again, this doesn't make any of the games bad.  They're just forging a new path for themselves.

As to controller v. KBM.  I tried using a controller on PC for Inquisition and the results were quite bad.  But I made some adjustments to my control scheme (KBM) and I haven't had any issues since.

The controller is worse than KBM...after you've gotten use to KBM.  I went out and bought a bluetooth dongle specifically to use my PS4 controller.  I sat down and was ready for the awesomeness.  It was really awkward, and even trash pulls were painful.  I can, however, recognize the superiority of a joystick for moving the tactical camera as well as the smoothness of holding down buttons for toggleable abilities.

Perhaps if we weren't limited to 8 abilities then KBM would have a leg up, but since we are, that doesn't really matter.  The only benefit to using KBM right now is quick save and quick load.

AJ used to be a decent reviewer but he's lost all credibility by now. He rated the pc port of DA:I an 8, even though it's a train wreck.

That's surprising, because it had a sizeable outcry OUTSIDE the forums. The reason being that quite a few people didn't get the memo about how it was a multiplayer game and were judging it as a single player campaign.

Considering how it was presented, I don't blame them.

And to be honest, multiplayer aspects on something like Neverwinter Nights is akin to Little Big Planet; the potential for a good time is there, someone has to make it first. That is a lot different, and much more subjective, in the long run too.

I recall a sizable outcry on the old Bio boards too. The 3D graphics were very unpopular, the companion implementation was almost universally hated, and the bad rules implementations for resting and death offended a lot of purists. That's before we get to the writing.; one line I heard a lot was that Charwood was the only decent part of the OC.

Anyway, this sort of taxonomic debate never does anything useful. Whether or not we put a story in the box labeled "DEM," it's still the same story.

What are you talking about? This is probably the most intellectual discussion on these forums.

What happens at the end solves a different problem than what they had been planning for. I won't get into the details, but if you consider it a deus ex machina, it serves to illustrate a major point of the novel.

Are you talking about Lord of the Flies? I assume so because you said "novel" but you quoted me where I only talked about Dragon Age.

I can't say why, but this seems to be the consensus on the forums. When the complaints about controls came up, the threads were flooded by people saying controllers were fine and players should get controllers, even to the point of starting up the platform wars as if it made consoles better somehow.

I also didn't try The Witcher 2 with a controller, but I had no problems on the KB+M.

I agree with the number one assessment. I have some quibbles about combat, tactics, armor/inventory and convo methods, but overall, this is a great game and my favorite of the year.
