I'm finding the pathfinding atrocious. It doesn't seem possible to have some characters climb a ladder to seek high ground while leaving the others below.
Will disabling companion AI fix that?
Also, can I disable or enable companion AI during combat?
Does disabling companion AI stop them from moving around?

I can't claim to have definitively tested it, but turning off companion AI was a disaster for me. They still walked/ran to stupid places and did literally nothing during combat without my input (including defend themselves if attacked). I lasted two short encounters before turning it back on.
It certainly did nothing to help pathfinding.
From my perspective/experience, turning AI off for my PC was worthwhile (since I'm mostly controlling her), but of the rest, any gains in convenience were drastically offset by the hassle it created in companions.
