I'd prefer an older asari, in all honesty.
We need to admire the Maidens too.

I like Josephine as a character but romancing her doesn't feel particularly passionate (in an emotional sense) the way it does with other Bioware characters. I don't need to see sex or nudity but I want the romance to be as epic as the battles. I don't want to sit back and just think "aaaw, that's cute/funny/sweet". Although she's not my favourite, I think this is where Liara beats all others. If you start romancing her in ME1, by the time you get to ME3, it really is a love for the ages. It's why I normally romance her on my FemShep runs even though she had a few quirks that tend to bug me. This also where Dragon Age loses out in comparison to ME. By the time you really fall in love with a character, the game is over and you never hear from them again unless it's a cameo or Leliana (and even then she's not your LI anymore).
That's the thing about having a variety of romance types though, you can suit more tastes.
Like how Bull's is all about sex, Josephine's is fluffy, Sera's is teenager-ish, Cassandra's romantic, Blackwall's darker, etc. I do agree about Liara though. While I don't like her a great deal, she ended up being my main Shep's LI, mostly because the way their relationship progresses over the trilogy is marvellous.
frankly, I was hoping for something similar like having a romance with an AI like Joker and EDI. In fact, seeing Helo and Athena, Gaius and Six (Hello again, EDI) in Battlestar Galactica made think Mass Effect is still playing it safe by limiting itself with romance options specifically on just organics. I always feel ME miss out on a lot of stuff that BSG did good with human-cylons romance and the morality questions. I'd imagine it would be even more harder if EDI is romanceable and its starcrossed either way since the only way for her survive at the end of ME3 was for you to kill yourself. (still... missing out on romancing Tricia Helfer.... Bioware... *hisss*)
I'm not adverse to romancing alien characters but I do question about the delivery of the characters. Its seems the main priority of having alience romance in ME was for you to have an alien romance.. rather than just romance. In ME1, I'm not keen about Liara as an LI because I develop an instant aversion to her introduction as a damsel in distress trapped in crystal prison and the insta-love she had when you barely knew her as a person. But the game try to cast you this vision of Asari being desirable and sexy and beautiful. That felt... shallow and empty and Liara and Sha'ira exist simply to satisfy that. Of course, Liara do improve in time.
But in ME2, I find its easier to romance Thane because he was already interested in FemShep as a woman and already called her Siha even if she didn't pursue him with a flirt dialogue.
I don't have any experience regarding romancing Tali (I've seen youtube vids though) but somehow she reminded me of me and my love for cats. I'm deathly allergic to cats. If I already have an allergy episode (like sleeping in a relative's house and they own cats) and I get another dose of allergens (like someone smoking around me), I get acute bronchoconstriction, face itchy, eye balls itching, face scratching, wheezing etc. I still love cats but cats and me can never be together or my condition will get worse because of the increased hypersensitivity. That's what I imagine Tali situation with BroShep.
Garrus on the other hand require a more aggressive approach on Shepard's part to get him interested. I know, a vast majority swear by him but I still can't stop seeing him and Tali as soulmates. Listening to them flirting together, Garrus offering Tali his turian chocolate, Tali hinting him about him liking to keep people away and him flirting about Tali getting up close and personal and watching their relationship unfold is by far more enjoyable than pushing Joker to pursue EDI.
But with non-human romance, I preferred Dragon Age series' non-human LIs like Zevran, Fenris, Merrill, Solas, Sera and even Iron Bull is good. Each of the are unique characters and unique relationship paths. I don't feel like they exist simply because you want a non-human choice but their romance doesn't sound like it was driven by juvenile curiosity but instead, a more meaningful relationship progression as the story goes. Romance can be universal, about personal connection and feelings and mutual decisions and insecurities which Bioware writers sometimes do it right. It really doesn't have to be exclusively Alien romance (that sound like exoticism btw). Just take it as it is.. optional love story. Now if only we could romance Varric in the next DA.
and a bit off-topic.
The more options the better. Romance is one of the main reasons why I buy these damn games.
I disagree. The more doesn't mean the better. Not as long as game developing has its limits. Better have one good romance story than couple of shallow ones.

Don't forget Quarians. They are like humans and Asari too.
Regardless of what alien species she might be, I doubt she could compare to the character Liara was. The amount of character development and change she went through during the trilogy was likely the largest out of any of the characters minus possibly Jack and Garrus. Or Wrex, even.
She went from being an innocent but curious scientist, to being a battle-hardened space veteran, and The Shadow Broker!
Bring on the xenosexuality! ![]()
I do think it would be interesting to see a change in the way species view inter-species relationships because you're starting from scratch in a new galaxy, maybe everybody goes conservative?
I don't get alien romances. Personally I really like romances itself in Bioware games, especially when they are connected to main storyline (one of the reasons why Morrigan and Alistair are my favourite LI companions). I understand desire for this kind of storytelling, I understand desire for particular LI archetypes, I understand desire for straight/gay romances. It is all part of human nature already .
But alien romances are just...nope. With the exception of asari perhaps but they are practically blue skinned bi-curious space lesbians with completely human female appearance.
Couldn't we just stick to romancing humans? I understand that aliens can have very interesting personalities but isn't friendship path enough for that? What next? Hanar scientist in Mass Effect and Broodmother in Dragon Age as love interests? Will that be unconventional enough?

You know the good thing about Bioware romances, if you aren't into alien romances, don't do them. Why should other people be forced to follow what you are into? The option should be there for those that want it. I'm not gay, nor do I care about gay romances. But there should be options for those that are.

That is just horrible, and a tad bit lazy design wise. Hopefully Bioware changes quarian official look. That is just way too human looking.
Okay. The fan art did not do the skin color and eye color correctly. The skin is purple and eyes are white.

I chose synthesis, so a blond Banshee for me, biovarplz.

Just don't make them cheesy. I love Liara and Tali and I always romance one of those two, but dating Liara seemed... Idk cheesy, and dating Tali was like a forbidden love kind of thing.

You want cheesy? Try romancing Garrus and doing the tango with a man who looks like one of the tree people.

Maybe with an Ardat-Yakshi. Done right, I think it could be a fascinating romance arc.
with a good one i hope,
a krogan maybe?
or the new specie? http://www.ign.com/i...4b4f5783437bb29
Agreed. I understand this isn't hard SciFi, but the inter-species sex got a bit ridiculous with the inclusion of chitinous, scaly and bubble-suit partners. What happened to cross-species fluid contact dangers? Ugh.
BioWare always falls to fan-service, though. I do appreciate their eagerness to please their fans; but I'd like to see these decisions moderated by narrative (common) sense.
with the turians, krogans we can't have sex, with the asari i imagine is like in "under the skin" just contact by touch

you played the 3 games and don't love the characters? it's sad.
I don't care about Salarian relationships, but it would be another drag on development resources which I would rather have focused on creating a good romance between more compatible and aesthetic races. According to most studies, about 3.5% of adults in the US are ******/bi-sexual only, but Bioware already wastes an unproportional amount of money on developing gay content for their games, like they wanted to advertise being gay or something. My guess is that the gay lobbies are just screaming the loudest currently and demand political correctness in every medium despite being a small minority.
Bioware already provides more fringe content than would be reasonable, and in the process they're annoying a lot of their customers - more than they please I would guess. So instead of developing even more content that hardly anybody wants, they should better make a real good romance finally, because the Liara romance was nothing but a joke. I especially hated that she had to constantly remind he that I'm going to die. What the hell? And I don't even want to go down to the Shuttle-Bay anymore in ME3, because Steve constantly pesters me about his lost gay lover with stories I don't care the least about to hear.
PS. funny that the forum censors the word h0m0-sexual.
if you don't want Cortez, you don't have to talk to him and if you don't want to hear Liara likewise you don't have to talk to her, its and rpg they give you some free will to lead the story to certain point you want.
gay/bi romance options in ME3: Steve Cortez, Samantha Traynor, Kaidan Alenko, Kelly Chambers, Liara T'Soni, Diane Allers, Samara
That would be 7, not 2, and already an extreme over-representation considering considering the percentage of gay people in the US.
So there's really nothing to complain about for gays.
Liara T'Soni and Samara are mono-gender they're not male or female, and if you dont know about history or see the news, that "little" percent of people have and will have somethings to complain, because of people with a retrograde way of thinking.

I'd find this very interesting, though I'd want them to handle it differently to the Joker/EDI romance. There was way too much focus on 'sexbot' imo, and less on their personality dynamic or the organic/AI thing, or even philosophical issues like the fact that the AI will outlive the human (far beyond asari) and never age, etc. I definitely think it would be one of the stranger romances, but I could see it working with an AI like EDI. Her personality is just human enough to make it work. And the jokes! ![]()
One great tip ME could take from DA would be not having the romance build up to pre-final mission sex. In DA (if it features at all), it's usually in the middle of the romance arc, and the importance of it depends on the character. With people like Zevran and Isabela, it's out of the way early, and only afterwards does the romance start to develop.
What you mentioned about femShep having to spell out her feelings for Garrus more aggressively and directly - I think that's part of why I'm not keen on his romance. I like him as a friend, but I prefer it when the relationship segues from friendship to romance more smoothly. I think Kaidan (and Ashley) definitely hit that note. Sometimes it makes sense for it not to (like with Jack), but I definitely prefer when it is smoother.

I've never seen the Garrus romance. What does she do exactly?
The EDI/Joker thing just comes off like a formal business arrangement on her part. It's funny, but very dry. And just loneliness on his part. His question kind of coincides with you meeting Cortez or Jack in the bar and dancing... and he's thinking about being on the sidelines.

She suggests skipping the sparring go directly to the tiebreaker and that they could test his reach and her flexibility.
Liara T'Soni and Samara are mono-gender they're not male or female
This is a common fan misconception.
The prefix mono means one or single. For example a person who is monogamous only has one lover, and someone who is monolingual only speaks a single language. A train that operates on a single rail is a monorail. Ect., Ect.
The word monogendered would mean a single gender, rather than no gender. The Asari are monogendered and female.
