Meh....I wish they'd stop catering to the wishes of fanboys/girls.
Imo they should've just left it with humans and Asari. The idea that every species in the galaxy is sexually compatible with the human race is ridiculous. The romances really took a hit in my book when we could all of the sudden bang dextros.
I see where you're coming from tbh. I mean, I can even get why people might want to romance Garrus personality-wise, and I couldn't resist trying the Tali one once (even if it was somewhat creepy - it felt like a rockstar taking advantage of a 16 year old groupie if you ask me), but both of those romances should have been physically impossible. But I guess the thing with the romances is that they're all avoidable.
And after all, is making it with a hot alien babe not what man has dreamt of since he first looked at the stars?

Let's be honest, the Femshep-Asari romances was not included for the benefit of gay women. It was included because men find it hot. Which we do. Cos it is.
And Liara, Kelly, Kaidan, Samara and Diana are all hetero romances as well, so the gay people aren't exactly "stealing" your options...

I never got the appeal of alien romances. I did all of them once just to see the content but human romances were the only ones I can relate to. I think there was a tweet from Mac Walters that pretty much confirmed that alien romances will be in the game. I'd like to see a "romance" with an alien without any sex involved. It might be quite an interesting experiment for Bioware
I would like to see this as well. It's become so cliched to have all the alien LIs be gorgeous space babes/dudes with totally compatible genitalia; even Garus's romance content was very typical in that the payoff was still a(n implied) sex scene.
The ultimate culmination of a relationship shouldn't always end in sex, and by extension we shouldn't be limited in romancing only those things which are 'compatible' to human anatomy.
A sentient space slug (for example) wouldn't make for a 'sexy' romance option, but being able to enter into a relationship based on shared intellectual and social preferences would be interesting to see.

Yup. And that was what the Asari were for way back in ME1. But now we can bang anything with a brain....
It's obnoxious. That's not to say some of the other alien romances weren't well written. I'm just saying it's plain stupid that it's even possible.

This describes a friendship to me. A "Romance" implies romantic feelings, which imply a measure of physical attraction. I know that is just one possible view, but I suspect it is a widely held view. Developing these romance plots takes resources, so they have to make them as widely appealing as possible. Romancing the "space slug" with a beautiful mind would be an example of an extremely niche interest. They could just program the standard friendship arc and let the player view it as a romance, if he or she wishes.

Think of it as a romance with a person who is a quadriplegic. Physical attraction or not, there is no conceivable way for a 'standard' physical romance to happen in such a scenario.
Just take that concept and apply it to an alien that has a completely foreign method of reproduction; such as mitosis or via spores; and as such doesn't view the sex act as a measure of romance or an alien who's anatomy would make it physically impossible for a sexual encounter between it and a human being.
Maybe the final culmination of a player's relationship with such an alien would be it sharing a very intimate part of its life with the player; maybe something like a Hanar giving their face name to the PC and referring to itself in the first person.
And if one must absolutely have naked bodies on screen as a sign of a 'completed' romance arc, then why not have it be a scene with out any physical acts? Just the human character and the alien character in a room looking at each other, each knowing that sex is out of the question, but by standing naked before each other they each show they have no more secrets, everything is laid bare before the other in an intimate display of commitment despite no contact taking place.

As to the nudity and sex scenes, they've become sort of sad in their inevitability. Sometimes less is more. Now, with any BioWare game, I can generally assume that any character with whom my PC pursues a romantic relationship is going to get naked just before the final mission. It's all very rote, and a bit juvenile. I liked that Josephine, the DAI character I romanced on my only playthrough, didn't get naked. It was a refreshing surprise. It almost felt like I was spared that embarrassingly juvenile cartoon sex scene. I don't use the word juvenile to insult those who like this part of the game. It's just my take on it. It generally feels silly and underdeveloped.

Meh, I'd prefer sex scenes, just give people the ability to skip it if they don't like it.
I like alien romance. Always romance Liara in ME1, always romance Tali in ME2, then dumped them both for Kaidan in ME3.

I have no desire to romance any alien that looks like an animal you'd find on Earth. (See: Krogan, Turian, Salarians etc) Friendship sure but bumping uglies...no.

So humans are out as well? Because you do know that humans share like 99% of the same dna as chimps.

What are you saying? That you would date a chimp because they are 99% the same as humans? That 1% obviously makes a lot of difference... okay then...

putting Dev-Time into weird romances is counterproductive. I rather have a good main storyline, honestly.
Krogans are turtles on 2 legs, basically.
Salarians are a form of the typical grey aliens who are so highly evolved that they lost all interest in sex anyway.
Turians are basically cats in space. (Wingcommander inspired?)

Eight million years of genetic divergence goes a very long way, and DNA isn't a go-to guide to overarching surface appearance, either -- we share 50% of our sequence with bananas, too, but only cannibals think peeling off our skin reveals ripe, juicy fruit.
For the record, mrjack, if I had to take a guess I would reckon that the point ShadyKat was seeking to make in that comparison is that we're animals, too. I think.

An Asari LI isn't necessarily guaranteed.
Back before ME2 was released most people were assuming Samara was an LI.

I started always locking in an LI in ME3 after Kaidan revealed his hidden feelings for my MaleShep. Before a riot starts, I'll explain that statement. It was a heart-breaking scene. The dude poured out his heart and soul, and I had to shoot him down, regardless of how gentle it was. I much prefer we have that "like brothers" conversation, instead. I'm sure there are specific "dos and do-nots" to avoid these traps I keep stepping in, but I've never done the research to learn them, honestly.

I probably would've had no LI in ME, more often than not, if it weren't so tricky to avoid stumbling into a relationship with Ash. Of course, it's easy enough to leave her on Virmire, which has become my standard, liking neither her content nor appearance in ME3 (especially next to Kaidan's awesomeness).

I believe if you don't buy him the whiskeyand don't ask about his biotics in hospital, he won't come on to you. The other surefire way is to be an arsehole to him on Mars and don't go visit him in hospital but if he's your mate then that goes against the whole RP point of the game. I think you said earlier (too lazy to check) that you play on 360 so if you want the "brothers" chat but no romance just lock one in then uncheck it in gibbed. Bit of a hassle mind.

I don't either, heh. I did romance Liara once, though, and it was in fact during my only FemShep run. I just have a tough time romancing males, because I really love being able to get inside my Shepards' minds, and it's an admitted weakness on my part but it's hard for me to maintain that degree of closeness when I'm scripting their attraction to the sex I don't prefer, haha. I somehow have an easier time with Shepard being female than with that, even, although again, I've only managed to do one file as FemShep.
I don't like playing as a FemShep either but I managed four PTs to do the romances, Traynor, Garrus and (sort of) Vega that I couldn't do with MShep but I also saved Liara for FemShep because it seems like those two are really into each other compared to other pairings. It was fun to tease Vega though. Actually that was probably my favourite FemShep romance and it didn't even really count. Garrus was way over-hyped by fangirls because... the tango? Never romanced Tali... never will. Forgot about Javik and the Citadel DLC... that would be just... nope. I only recruit him to get XP and the particle rifle, then I just leave him in the cargo hold. I have done most missions with him to see the content but he's so unlikable.

Yeah it was a bit of a generalisation, despite what I said I've never even romanced Liara. But you know what I mean. The Asari romance was probably there as a guy's girl-girl fantasy, that girls who like girls might've enjoyed it seemed kind of incidental. This is in ME1 I mean, the Liara romance was certainly more fleshed out in 2 and 3.
And I agree, tbh I'd more likely stick with humans, and honestly it's mostly because I loved the fact that ME paid attention to the science a little bit. I liked that it actually explained things like Levo/Dextro Chirality and all that stuff, it just made the universe feel more real. Even after what I said about Asari, I can appreciate the fact that they provided an explanation on how they mate and why it works. So that you can then have sex with a genetically incompatible, hyper immunity-deficient alien girl was a bit dumb. To say nothing of whatever the hell Joker did with EDI... There's another example of what could have been an interesting platonic romance, but they had to go and sexualise it.
Ultimately, I'm not even all that interested in romances. I did them mostly to see what might happen, but my favourite playthrough happened to involve none. But I don't want to be telling people what they should and shouldn't like, I just don't want the devs to go overboard. Bioware can include options, it's not like I need to take them, but believable lore is more important to me than cute love scenes.

Thane romance was the best...ever. Too bad it was treated horribly in ME3. Hoping for another drell romance in next ME.
I always find the aliens more intruiging than humans in ME universe as characters overall. Although turians was a little too alien for my taste.
