I don't trust Dougal. But unfortuantely I've been buying a lot of potions, and after finishing all the available quests prior to the Dark Roads, I only have a little more than 30 gold.
I've been wandering around hoping for respawning bandits or any other source of cash, but I've found nothing. DO I have to swallow my pride and go to Dougal?
Yes, Dougal is there for exactly this purpose. Don't worry too much, you actually get a funny little scene with him after the DR that you don't get if you get the money yourself.
I finished the game with 400 gold, so i have the opposite never buy anything thing going. I mean, you were supposed to save up for your family's future, you know?
How? I usually have a minnimum of 60 Sovereigns at the end of Act I even in playthroughs where I spent a lot of it on prostitutes and charity and bought all the health posions I could find. Then most of the time I still take Dougals money just to get hsi quest out of my questlog. 
I'm kind of crazy though.
You might be able to get around this by playing a DLC. Or two. (Notice I said "might." I'm not sure how lucrative they are.) If not I think you have to go to Dougal.
I only asked for his help once just to see what happens. I don't spend any coin on stuff and even after giving 50 sovereigns to Bartrand, I still had almost 40 sovereigns entering the deep roads.
