Hi

I just bought the game and I don't get how rouges work.

I'm lv 8 and I am constantly dying as a rouge. Then soon after my team gets wiped out. I have checked guides and I still don't get it.

What kind of daggers should I buy? Or make? How do I get some dual-edged daggers at my level?

My armor, I bought the deluxe and got some armor with it, is that good armor? What is good armor?

I can't tell what to craft since it doesn't display the DPS/armor ratings when checking a receipt when making one.

And can I restart my party members skills? I know I can do mine, but can I respec my inquisition members skills? I don't think I've made wise choices so far.

I play as rogue. Archer though. I keep my distance.

Dual wield rogue is probably the worst choice for this game. Sorry to say that. It demands extremely well timing, overview and fast reflexes. Your hardware also has something to say here.

The only chance you might have to survive is to craft some high armor (Tier 3 or 4) later on (after arrival at Skyhold).
Get as much health as possible (amulets, belts). In the meanwhile stay out of range and stick to needle tactics. In and out in a split second. Use cloak, smoke etc. all the time. And set your team up to protect you in the Tactics.

First: Get out of Haven. You need to get to Skyhold.

When you get to Skyhold I suggest you craft some real heavy armor for your self. You go to Emprise du Lion and shoot a couple of snofleurs, collect som dawnstone and silverite.
Silverite overrides class restriction (not race!). That means if you craft a piece of armor with silverite in the main slot you can actually use heavy armor meant for warriors. This should patch you up a bit.

And get the Archanist as soon as you can via the War Table. When you have her you can make mastercraft armors and weapons. Look for 'Fade touched' metals, leather and cloth. A few of them have some nice features, like the snofleurs skins (On hit: Heal 1% of maximum health").
Some of the Tier 3 crafting materials (metals) can provide you with very high maximum health as well.

PS.The fade-touched snofleurs skins (On hit: Heal 1% of maximum health") randomly spawn. You have to kill about 300 snofleurs before you get one of these. It can take an hour or two.

To start off a Rogue I recommend getting Flank Attack, Twin Fang, Stealth, Easy to Miss. Don't bother trying to melee up front all the time. Only do so to regain stamina.

Start attacks with Flank Attack > Twin FangStabby Stab  (x2-4 melee hits to get stamina back up) > Stealth > Twin Fang!

Rinse and repeat, enjoy stabby stabbing~

Dual Daggers Rogue I always found tough early on. They bloom later on. So I don't think you're doing anything wrong.

What I do is I start with Rogue, but as an Archer, then switch over to Dual Daggers around 10th level. You can do this by buying a Re-Skill Amulet at the Blacksmith. You'll see a pole with stuff hanging off it. The 1st Amulet costs only 1 sovereign, then afterwards only 345, not that much.

---

Gilgamesh, are you at the Fallow Mire by any chance? You're around the level when that gets unlocked. That area is simply very unfriendly towards melee. So the above is my impression for anwyhere in the game, but it hits the Fallow Mire particularly hard.

I think rogues are the most fun, but they do require to be extra careful. Here are some tips (you may already be doing some of these), i hope they help:

  1. Always try to attack the enemy from behind, by using stealth or picking an enemy who is focused on your tank.
  2. Be very careful when attacking 2H melee guys, shield guys or bears. They all have area attacks that will hit you even if you're behind. So step in, use twin fangs, a couple of attacks and step out to be safe.
  3. What I usually do when facing a group is have my tank attack the melee guys, and then use my rogue in stealth to go behind an archer or mage, use twin fangs and maybe a couple of extra hits (i like shadow strike also). Most casters and archers should die pretty fast. If they're not dead yet, build stamina, flank attack, twin fangs. Once all archers and casters are dead, go finish the melee guys.

Dual bladed daggers will come later in the game, don't worry too much about them, you should be fine with normal daggers.

As for crafting equipment, it's not ver user friendly, but here's what I do to find upgrades (let's say for example you want to upgrade your armor):

  1. Go to the blacksmith
  2. Go to the Armor tab your inventory screen
  3. Inspect the armor you are wearing and take note of its stats (mainly the armor value)
  4. Now go to the "craft armor" station in the blacksmith area and find the appropriate tab for your type of armor (light for mages, medium for rogues, heavy for warriors)
  5. Select the schematics one by one and take note of their armor value (if you find a higher armor value, it's probably an upgrade for you)
  6. This is where it gets tricky. You'll also see there are 5 possible types of material slots and each slot can hold 3 types of material (cloth, leather, metal), so watch out for the type of slots on your possible upgrade:
    • Masterwork slot: it is only available in higher tier schematics, and it grants special attributes to your item, for instance: build guard on hit (good for a defensive approach) or chance to proc hidden blades (awesome for an offensive approach).
    • Main slot: it determines the armor value, depending on which material you use. If the schematic's armor value shows to be 80-100, it means you can get that range of values depending on which tier of material you use in that slot (Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 or Tier 4).
    • Utility slot: it grants you basic attributes like dexterity, strength, willpower, etc. As a rogue, you want dexterity mostly which is available through leather utility slots, but you can also (less-so) benefit from other types of materials.
    • Offensive slot: it grants attack bonuses like crit, flank damage, etc. As a rogue, you also benefit mostly from leather offensive slots, I'd suggest flanking damage, crit chance, and crit damage.
    • Defensive slot: it grants defensive bonuses like resistance to melee, ranged or magic, or elemental resistances (fire, cold, etc.) As a rogue you don't want to focus too much on defensive bonuses, but it's not bad to get a bit of these.
  7. When you click on each slot, you'll be able to select materials that fit, and see what kind of stat they will yield.
  8. Play around filling the slots, and it will show you the armor stats. If they're better than what you inspected in your inventory, you have your upgrade.
  9. Also note that all crafted weapons and some crafted armor allow for upgrade slots once they are crafted (daggers allow for grips, armor allow for legs and arms). For armor, there's no way to see if there will be upgrade slots until you craft the item, but the general rule is that scout, hunter and prowler armor will allow for upgrades, and armor with other fancy names probably won't.
  10. If your crafted armor does allow upgrades then check the craft armor station for the appropriate schematics, if you don't have any, you can buy upgrades at the vendor in Haven, and then you can apply them to your armor at the modify armor station in the blacksmith. Just make sure you're using the right type of upgrades (light, medium or heavy) depending on your armor type.

Hope it helps!

Yeah, the game don't tell what schematics are before you buy them. Fortunately 90% of the time, they are worth it. There is nothing else in the game worth buying besides crafting materials.

Fortunately for us, a quick google search removes the guesswork.

http://dragonage3.wi....com/Schematics

The wiki says the stats, and even locations for all the schematics besides bianca.

The easiest thing to do is get 4 forces agents as early as possible (google inquisition agents), and pick up the rogue schematics perk.

Now the other half of your problem...

  • Do you have evade?
  • Do you have flanking strike?
  • Do you have stealth + upgrade?
  • Do you have easy to miss?

If you said no to any of those, make sure you have a really good excuse for not taking them. Those are 4 really powerful skills that will keep your rogue alive and awesome. Evade takes some getting used to but when you get it you'll be dodging everything like a champ. Later in the game I ditched easy to miss because I could dodge attacks so well I didn't care about melee aggro anymore.

Thank you! So much better.

I went with rogue since it seemed like a really fun class, and it is - but so squishy.

I want to go Tempest too. I don't like assassin to much. Good idea?

My party, how do I balance it? I've never played this game - though this games tactics seem similar to GW.

What does the min/max mean for armor?

I specced Blackwall as a tank, and he saves my bacon all the time. If you don't like Blackwall, you could try Cassandra, but Blackwall's my favorite.

I always bring him and a mage that can cast barrier.

Tempest and Assassin are very good specs for daggers as well as archery (assassin is my favorite). Artificer fits archery better because of the focus ability.

For your standard group, I'd recommend 1 tank, 1 mage, 1 support archer, and yourself. This is exactly what you get from start with Cass, Solas and Varic and it is a very well balanced group. You can toy around and switch characters if you want, just keep in mind it's convenient to always have 1 warrior, 1 rogue and 1 mage in group.

For starters, you might want to set all your party members to follow the tank, to avoid any unwanted aggro.

The range in crafting schematics details the possible armor values you can get, depending on which materials you use. An example with made up numbers: A tier 3 armor schematic with a range of 150-200 will yield 150 armor if you use a tier 1 metal in the main slot, 175 if you use a tier 2 metal, and 200 if you use a tier 3 metal.

My second character is a DW rogue and I've just made it to Skyhold. So rogues kinda suck now ? I had no major problems with it until now. The only problem I have is that I don't know what skills are a must have, but some people already answered my question in this thread.

So what spec should one choose ? I'd go for the assasin. Other thoughts ?

I'm planning on killing all the dragons in my current run.

I keep hearing to get out of Hinterlands, is it just a bad area in general?

And Perks - I bought the arcane knowledge perk.

What perks are good, what aren't?

How do you get perks? They seem like I randomly get them?

Dagger rogues do not suck. They arguably can potentially deal the most damage in the game. But they're trickier to play than other classes since they are vulnerable to damage by being in melee range and lacking heavy armor, and they require proper timing and stamina management to be efficient.

Assassin is my favorite specialization, even if the focus ability is useless. Good choice. Tempest is also a decent option, and has one of the most powerful/broken focus abilities. Artificer is the one i'd recommend the least for a dagger rogue NPC, but I guess it can be viable if you take advantage of all those traps while you're in melee.

Hinterlands is not bad. If you stay too long there, you can become over leveled for some content later on. And some people argue that side quests are better in other areas. Frankly, I don't see the difference, and most of the content scales to your level, so I suggest you stay there as long as you want, and then go out whenever you want to explore somewhere new. There's way too much to explore in the game, so if you want to experience all or most of it, there's no way to avoid gaining levels like crazy.

You get a perk every time  you gain an Influence level (the blue progress bar you see when you finish a quest). Perks I like are "Fine Tools" (or whatever is the name of the Secrets ability that lets you pick the tough locks) "True Grit" (especially in nightmare) "Advanced Focus and Master Focus" (if you want even more greatly overpowered focus abilities). There are also good perks for increasing your inventory space (antivan tailoring) or the amount of potions you can carry. If you're into RP and codex farming, you definitely want all the "Knowledge" abilities.

KE doesn't have to be OP, and it's much less warrior than AW from Origins. You still can't use anything but a staff and you only get Spirit Blade and Fade Cloak as melee range spells.

Combat Clarity is the Passive that makes it 'OP' by generating barrier equal to 30% of any damage you do. Essentially it's the equivalent of a Champion generating Guard, you'll likely never have less than full Barrier and when you do it won't be for long.

You're talking about Fade Shield, not Combat Clarity :)  But otherwise, yeah.

I've played both a KE and DW Tempest up through level 20.  I have soloed with both of them through various parts of the game on Nightmare.  The KE is obviously more "powerful" in terms of being able to win any fight, but the Tempest is very powerful, too, and imo the 2nd-best choice for soloing.  It just takes a while to get the hang of it.  DW Rogues are the best damage dealers in the game, but they're very gear-dependent and squishy.  That keeps things interesting.

I prefer 'Assasin' specialisation.

Why?

Because 'Mark of Death' is devastating in combination with 'Mark of the Rift'. You will see this if you go this path.

Cast 'Mark of Death' on a dragon immediately followed by 'Mark of the Rift' and see the effect.
I squeezed 30% of the Highland Ravagers health with this.

Anyway, I have a suggestion for you:
Try to get out of Haven as soon as possible. When you get to Skyhold you will have access to other areas where you can find much better equipment and crafting materials. This is essential.

1. As mentioned before you can collect some Tier 3 materials in Empire du Lion. Get dawnstone, silverite and snofleur skins a bundle. Just collect all you can.

2. The other map you should visit is The Hissing Wastes. Even if you are low levelled you can still sneak in and out in many places. Especially if you are a rogue. Use your cloak and sneak by enemies to avoid conflict.
In The Hissing Wastes you also collect crafting materials: Volcanic Aurum (best source for health crafting) and Nevarite. Add Wyvern scales and (Hardened) Gurn Hide to your shopping list. Go easy on the gurns, they have a nasty tendency to smash you, and they have a lot of health. Wyvern are easier, but they still have a lot of health. Have in mind you can always teleport back to camp if you are low on health. I know it is boring to walk all the way twice, but you only need to do this once. As soon as you have your first high level armor crafted you should be fine.

3. The Hissing Wastes: There are 5 tombs here leading to The Tomb of Fairel. In each of these tombs you will find level 20 (purple) rings, belts or amulets that seriously raises your defense or offense. Like + 20% Barrier Dammage Bonus, + 20% Guard Damage Bonus etc.
Sneak in and grab the good stuff.

* You can also use the farming glitch if you're into it.
If you leave at least 1 item in the chest it will respawn when you return to this map after having visited another map. Quite handy with your entire team equipped with unique stuff, right?
This glitch counts for all special chests on every map. You can also use this trick at the rifts.
When you have cleared a rift a green sack will spawn on the ground. This often contains two rare or unique items. Grab the best of the two and leave it on the ground. Remember where its location is, leave the map and return.

I have another specific spoiler for you, but also a major help:

4. Emerald Graves (the forrest elven map): If you visit the Watcher’s Reach (where Fairbanks hides) you will find 'Map of Watcher’s Pass'. This will lead you to a belt with + 200 Maximum Health (Superb Belt Of Health) hidden in a dirt pile/rubble. Its easy to access outside on a cliff shelf. You can eventually avoid the rift by sneaking around it. I have attached a link to a map to help you find this map and ring. This should help you through a great deal of your troubles (sorry for the different red location crosses. It's image no 2 that shows the exact location)

Map overview of Emerald Graves, with location of map and belt location:

I must say I enjoy my KE but then again the Arcane Warrior in DA:O was overpowered as well if you had all the sustainable defenses.

I don't use spirit blade but use Chain lighting, Fire Mine, Static Cage and occasional barrier on my companions.  This allows me to use my mana on the offensive instead of throwing up barrier all the time.  I wanted to play an elementalist, an offensive mage and KE gives me that oppertunity, and instead of using 50 mana to throw up a barrier I can just focus on offense...I love it.

I liked having 2 mages (Dorian + Solas) for barrier/crowd control/ranged attack and a tank (I chose Cass, though many like Blackwall). It may have been because I happened to like hanging out with those three the most, but I also found them useful.

When crafting armor/weapons the stats derive from the materials used. So Iron will make weapons/armor with stats at the low end of the range and rarer metals like Volcanic Aurum will make better weapons/armor. When you hover over the components the stats will change to let you know the DPS/armor rating you will get from that crafting material.

I have to repeat:

Silverite overides class restrictions.

If you want heavy armor as a rogue get your hands on the Tier 3 Battlemaster Mail and/or Battlemaster Armor schematics and throw some silverite in the main slot.
Buy them from the merchant in The Hissing Wastes. He deals in rare stock. You can find him in the canyon North-North East of the Logging Camp site on your map. Sneak your way to him to pass troubles if you are low level.
Here's what he offers:

Armor Schematics:

* Superior Venatori Helmet / 1279 gold
* Templar Armor / 9044 gold
* Dalish Scout Armor / 9044 gold
* Sturdy Prowler Armor / 8183 gold
* Sturdy Battlemaster Armor / 8183 gold
* Sturdy Battlemage Armor / 8183 gold
* Prowler Armor / 3839 gold
* Battlemaster Armor / 3839 gold
* Battlemage Armor / 3839 gold
* Prowler Armor Legs / 934 gold
* Prowler Armor Arms / 934 gold
* Battlemaster Armor Legs / 934 gold
* Battlemaster Armor Arms / 934 gold
* Battlemage Armor Legs / 934 gold
* Battlemage Armor Arms / 934 gold

Don't ever buy upgrades from merchants. It's a waste of money. Only use money to buy schematics and a very few unique items. You can craft much better equipment your self with the right materials.

You should also craft some daggers for your rogue. Go for this:

Masterwork Dual Curved Blade (Rare Tier 3 Dual-Blade Dagger schematic, found in one of the tombs in The Hissing Wastes)
Damage 11 Metal - 321 DPS
Utility 5 Leather
Utility 3 Leather
Utility 3 Leather
Masterwork Slot

Again, if you have aquired the Archanist (War Table operation) you will be able to create Mastercraft items.
There are a few items that can raise the effect of your crated items with 10%. An armor rated 280 will result in 308 (if the masterwork works). Naturally you have to get your hand on some crafting materials with this ability. They vary from 10% to 40%.

Here's a list of those who has 40% Critical Crafting Chance (I don't list the lesser items):

Dragon Tooth (Tier 4, available if you kill and loot a dragon)
Heartwood (Tier 3, located in The Still Ruins in The Western Approach behind a locked door that requires 'Deft Hands perk)
White Wyvern Hide (Tier 3, located in The Hissing Wastes in the The Oasis in a chest close to the landmark)

About rings,amulets and belts: Identical items don't stack!
If you use the same item in two seperate slots it will only count as one:

+20% Critical Chance and +20% Critical Chance = + 20% Critical Chance, and NOT 40%

But

+20% Critical Chance and +10% Critical Chance = 30%.

The location of the merchant in The Hissing Wastes and the White Wyvern scales:

Yeah I'm missing these. Good to know. This makes a lot more sense.

How do I choose my heroes/inquisitions AI? How do I edit it?

Can you explain how behaviors work? Not really understanding it.

What does follow and defend me? Should a tank be defended?\

And I saw that you can equip 4 rings for my accessories? I'm lv 6 why can I only equip two? Do you unlock the other two later?
