Question about Guard. Am I thinking along the right lines?

Hey guys,

I'm 70+ hours in now and still loving this. It does have some annoying points (the tactical combat being the main one) but overall i'm still really enjoying it.

I do have some questions though.

My understanding of Guard is that it works like a second health bar. So at the moment I have a +200HP belt applied to Blackwall which should in turn give his Guard bar an extra 200 HP right? I also have a +20 guard belt. Am I right in thinking this add's 20HP to the Guard bar (so it's rubbish in comparison) or do I have this wrong?

I would also like to know if I have the following right? If I have a choice of runes that add +10 damage to dragons, +10 damage to Darkspawn or +10 to living enemies for example. I would be better off adding the +10 damage to living wouldn't I? Because there are only 10 dragons in the game and not that many of the enemies are darkspawn (i'm guessing dragons don't count as darkspawn?) where as the +10 to living would work for the majority of enemies including dragons?

HP and Guard are separate stats, increasing one does not increase the other. Guard also sits at a much lower cap than HP. You don't get a 1:1 pool. I'm somewhat confused myself on how Guard mitigates damage differently than a naked health bar. It may just be a display issue, however, since Guard uses an image rather than a status bar.

As for the runes, I've only noticed the damage increase against Human targets. +Damage against living doesn't seem to be a catch all for anything not dead or demon. (Though technically they're the same thing in DA)

Not entirely accurate.  Maximum guard, before talents, is equal to 25% of your maximum health.  So when you increase your health, you do in fact increase your maximum guard possible.  With the talents in Vanguard, and Champion, you can raise your total possible guard to be equal to 37.5% of your total health +whatever max guard gear you have.

Guard takes damage just like your health would, the damage Guard takes is mitigated by all resistances AND armor, as opposed to Barrier, where armor is not factored into the damage Barrier takes.

All of this means that Guard scales with your maximum health to a degree, and it also scales with all mitigation, be it armor or damage resists.  Perks like Trust the Steel increase your armor while under guard, making your guard more durable, and this also means perks like improved War Cry are VERY nice because it increases your armor by +200% for 10 seconds, at higher gear levels basically making your guard nigh invulnerable to damage for that time.
