Why is the music so unmemorable and forgettable?

I have to say I was quite disappointed with the music of DAI. I remember the composer of DAII's soundtrack saying that he (she?) was rushed when making the score for that game (link). Yet even then, there were some memorable music, notably the music during the "sex" scenes. And the song by Florence and the Machine that is played during the credits. I had hoped that since DAI had a whole extra year, that the music would be much better.

Yet I can honestly say that none of the music I heard in DAI stood out or was memorable except for two of the Minstrel's songs (Empress of Fire and Enchanter). None of the background music, the score, stood out. The music during the sex scene didn't do anything. Some of the music that is played during the supposed "powerful" moments (like when you are crowned inquisitor, etc.) almost sound like they could be memorable, yet they just aren't. And let's not forget the end credits song, which does nothing. Compared to the Florence and the Machine song in DAII that really gave you the impression of having come to an end of a journey and that gave you chills.

With the DAI score or songs, there's none of that. I'll have to actually give the soundtrack a listen but a good score stands out even when being heard over sound effects, voices, or other noise.

The music is not "bad", it is just completely forgettable.

Opinion thread title worded as fact. Fail.

I find the DAI soundtrack to be excellent (playing it now).

From what I read, consensus is that it's the best one yet.

(Though there was soundtrack in the sex scenes?, sorry I must have been distracted, I missed it...)

I think the music is great. If you listen to the soundtrack on Youtube you'll find that a lot of the themes are pretty good. The main issue is that they're underused and don't trigger very often. Which is a shame since it dampens immersion and seems like a bizarre decision given how much of a staple music in RPG's has become.

I found the music for DAI to be very memorable and definitely not forgettable as I had some of the tracks in my head while I was at work. It really helped pull me into to those intense story moments. I would call a majority of the music from DA:O and DA2 unmemorable and forgettable. It seems that my taste in music differs from your own and that's okay.

I'm new to this series so I agree with the thread title. Thing is, in my mind I continuously hear the Skyrim OST and background music.

So maybe I should play more DA to brainwash myself.

Dawn Will Come and Journey to Skyhold?

Spoiler

You mentioned the tavern songs but all of them are fantastic.

The ambient music is great (when it plays) even though it obviously won't approach Jeremy Soule's god-tier stuff.

I think it's how BioWare wants it.

They don't want the music to get in your way except during the really big, important moments.

I think it's mostly unmemorable because it doesn't play very much.

Though honestly DA's music has never been especially memorable. It's mostly very standard fantasy stuff, and it does a solid job at it's main job of setting the mood but it doesn't live in the memory.

I like how the music added to moments without dominating them (except Dawn Will Come obviously). Even so I find the soundtrack very memorable and entertaining. So really they hit on the perfect balance for me.

Since I love the soundtrack, and think it's one of the big perks from pre-ordering that I savor, gonna have to say, threadfail is there. :)

Sorry you don't like it as much as I, but I find it memorable, and it's frequently playing in my dreams, no lie.  Different strokes for different folks.

I think DA:I's music blows DA:O and DA2's music out of the water.

I think its memorable and unforgettable.

Its only flaw is not being played more often during the whole game.

Yeah i'm not a fan of the soundtrack at all. It's good but dragon age good which means 2 or 3 tracks are awesome and the rest are just 'whatever' quality.

Shame. I have to play my own music when I play the game cause some of it is so bland.

I like the music. Just wish I heard it more in game, it seems to play sporadically or spurred by loading screens.

DAI Main theme should get some kind of award alone, its so good...I also declare it better now then the main theme from DAO! And as my voice and my opinion rules the Internet this is now FACT!

The music when Skyhold was introduced was nice. Also the music when you first hear Corypheus say "Bring forth the sacrifice" in DAI, the soundtrack had a really creepy vibe.

"Calling The Inquisition" is awesome, and the soundtrack in general is excelent. Completely forgettable? really?

I disagree, OP. Before the game was released, I thought most of the soundtrack was generic. But hearing it in the game, it works very well, and I've come to like it very much.

However, I maintain my pre-release impression that the main theme lacks the identity of DAO's main theme. It is technically very well-made, but unlike DAO's theme and its variation in DA2, you don't hear it and immediately recognize it as "the Dragon Age theme". It stands out less.
