Is there any way to get Solas to remove the tattoos from a male elf inquisitor through friendship with him?
I'm afraid not
it's a romance scene..

There's a good reason for that, though. Originally, he was planning on telling a romanced Lavellan the truth about himself, but at the last moment told her about the vallaslin instead.
I haven't romanced Solas so haven't seen all those scenes. Do you really know that he planned to tell Lavellan the truth about himself or was he just saying that? And if he was going to fess up, what made him change his mind at the last minute?

As of a couple days ago, we know it for sure. The writer said so in a podcast interview.
Here's the interview, but it's very spoilery.
He just said that Solas "chickened out."

As Addai67 said, Patrick Weekes confirmed in that podcast that Solas had planned to tell her the truth about himself in the final romance scene, but "chickened out" and instead told her the truth about the vallaslin. Still an important, meaningful truth. But not the one that he'd brought her there to tell her.

Why do you think he chickened out. Would it be because he's afraid she won't love him anymore? Or do you think it's more because he really doesn't want to reveal his true intentions concerning everything he's done. Of course we know it's really so that we, the players, can be left hanging. ![]()

Patrick said it's because he'd be betraying himself. He was about to give up everything for her. He had to really so that the stinger could happen and I guess the future plot could progress.

"I'm (essentially) the ancient elven god our people blame for the downfall of our race and our slavery at the hands of humanity. I did [insert description] which took away our magic, our immortality, and threw our society into chaos. Hugsies after? :)"Why do you think he chickened out. Yeah, I can see not wanting to share that bit.

Maybe he thought that she would freak out )) One thing to love an lets say ordinary elf, and the other is to discover that he is an ancient elven god known for his betrayal and trickery ) I think its a good thing that he didn't tell it. Its too much to deal with I think.
Also he didn't want to break up with her at first but at the last moment he changed his mind =(

He wasn't actually going to, it's so worth playing through the romance if you can, you can see when it hits him, it really hurts *applauds cinematic designers and VA's*

Of course we know that a huge number of folks who romanced him would STILL want to romance him after the big reveal. In real life, they probably wouldn't, just like in real life, I wouldn't have run off with Anders, but in game, I (Hawke) would never kill Anders or leave him. Also, in real life, I'd never recruit Zevran or Sten, but in game, my male warden is going to be with Zevran forever. ![]()
I haven't played a game romancing Solas yet so I don't yet have a feel for it all...it'll be fun when I do so, after reading all of your answers (I like knowing what is going to happen so I can avoid bad things, or in this case, so I am prepared for the sadness to come).

I think he was afraid of her rejection, plain and simple. Lavellan means a lot to him. And to be rejected by the one good thing to happen to you for a thousand years is a frightening prospect.
So he misses his chance to tell her, and instead tells her another very important truth. And she accepts that truth, and still loves him. Now he has a choice. He could continue to let things go as they have been going. He could leave everything behind and indulge his desire to be loved and cared for. And he almost does it. But then he realizes that this would be making the selfish choice, and thus betraying everything he believes in. It would also be betraying Lavellan, because she deserves more than a lie. In that instant he realizes that he has to end the relationship. And you can just see that realization hit him. It's such a well done change in facial expression.
Basically that scene in a nutshell.

Ah, okay. My elf appears to have no facial tattoos but you're right that I just changed them to look invisible. Guess it'll just be a funny looking cutscene...
