You actually do them?

Life's too short for that kind of anti-fun. I'd do it if it had, like you know, some kind of meaningful reward. Or was impressive graphically. Or had any redeeming factor whatsoever to the story.

Some of us can suffer a little from OCD and hate to leave anything undone, so I guess it is self-inflicted to a degree.  Case and point is that after dozens of playthroughs on ME3 I still can't avoid the boring, chore-like planet probing, although I did do some major tweaking/modding on the game to make it much less painful -binding a key to speed up the game 5x, making it so my ship burned no fuel, and tweaked the scanner big enough to scan the whole system in one ping.  Can't wait until there are these kind of mods for DAI to stream line the fun.

But your point is spot on.  It is anti-fun.  Makes me wonder why game developers put them in at all.

Because, as some of us already stated, many people like it. It may be anti-fun to you, but it's oodles of fun for me.

Sure I can see the astarium being fun, perhaps even the 30 point one that can take forever and a day to tediously go through all the permutations.  But I guarantee there is almost nobody who likes the shards, especially in the Oasis, that is nothing but a pointless grind.  And I am certain not one person on the planet likes the mass effect planet scanners.

For me it is that I (Sidney not my player character) do not pick locks. I do not swing swords. Yet Sidney has to solve puzzles. I can dumb down puzzle solutions for role playing if my character isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. I can't scale up if the puzzles are things I'm not particularly good at even if my character should be.

Don't start an "What is an RPG" discussion, please, I beg you. Though I think it'd be fun for these games to present the puzzle differently to characters of high Int and low Int. High Int - most of the puzzle is already done, low Int - you can't actually solve it unless you cheat, they've taken crucial bits out of the puzzle.

On Topic: Astariums, shards and mosaics, like the rest of the game come across as a wasted opportunity. They're completely divorced from the main story, I did them once but I doubt I'll bother again if I do another playthrough.

Say whaaat? Puzzle solving is something I actually expect and look forward to in RPG's. If there were no puzzles I would be very sad.

I would as well but I confess to enjoying them more if there are high stakes. "Solve this or DIE trapped in this dungeon forever!!!"

Pssst...it takes less time if you can solve it with your eyes first.

And remember that any node with an odd number of lines emerging from it must be either a start or end point. That can be handy in getting you going.

My most hated sadistic feature is not in the gameplay but in the options. Hit the little button marked reset at the bottom of the graphics options and it resets your difficulty too. Cue much swearing when you have to rollback 4 hours because you were going for the nightmare achievement.

Alternatively, one could have a cleverer NPC solve it if the player dithers too much or asks for help.

I really like the puzzle games. They give me something to play in times when I want to do something different or don't have time to throw myself into the campaign fully. Sometimes it's nice to have a complete change of pace without changing games,

Astariums were great. The shard collecting was a travesty. Especially the ones that involved a "jumping puzzle".

Both of these things were totally optional. If you do not enjoy them. Do not do them. They are for explorer/puzzler/collector players ( or ones who simply have OCD like myself. )

The same could not be said for ME2 planet scanning.

The orlais quest is kind of a fetch quest too. You trot around gathering "slander". 30 of them, I think.

Yep, more reasons to bring a character other than that's the guy that does fire dps at range.

The game actually has that, though. I got an agent over to my side simply because Cassandra was in the party. I let her convince the fellow. Or maybe it was a she.

I'm anther one who disagrees about the puzzles. The shards I could take or leave, likewise with the mosaics.

However, logic puzzles like the astrariums are great fun.

Astrariums are fun, quick, little puzzles that include some neat lore info, but the excessive collection quests are tedious. Especially when some of the quests can't be completed because the pieces don't spawn properly in the game.

I can dig it. Just no timed puzzles. Those really annoy the crap out of me.

I finished all the astrariums (loved them!) and the shards. I'm not a fan of the shards because ... why exactly is the leader of the Inquisition climbing mountains to find stuff when I have people for that? The number needed to unlock all the doors is outrageous and way, way too much work for the pitiful rewards at the end of the quest.

Still... at least you had quest markers helping you to find them. The mosaics are much worse.

Why does Shepard have to buy his own weapons?

Cause it's a game, that's why.

If DA:I was 'realistic', you'd be sitting on your throne all day long giving commands. When one your people finds a rift, you sigh, get on your mount and close it. Then it's back to the throne.

Because what's really ridiciulous here is that the only person in all of Thedas who can close rifts, is risking death evey single day by fighting out in the open, with a squad of 4 people, including him/herself. And don't even get me started on fighting Dragons while being Thedas' sole hope. If anything, every time you ran up to one of them beasts, everybody should say: X Greatly Disapproves. And Cass should kick your butt for being such a moron.

Don't bring realism arguments into games. There will be nothing left.

My IQ is also the only person in Thedas that can plant seeds in his six flower pots, despite all the folks standing around in the garden, including the person that oversees the entire garden area.

I enjoy the astrarium puzzles. Poke around on the internet enough, and you can find labeled solutions for the more difficult ones (ie, the massive Storm Coast puzzle). That one only takes me a minute or so now.

EDIT: Here is the link. http://images.euroga...y/80/format/jpg
