It's not just limited to Bioware, this is a common design of modern games. Thankfully the mini-games in Inquisition don't have an important dependency like they did in ME2, i.e. needing them to upgrade equipment so at least it can be said they've learned some lessons. If you don't enjoy them, don't do them. The pay off for completion isn't worth the effort put in to them anyway.

Best advice about DA:I (after leave the ****** Hinterlands) is:

Ignore the shards

The game is so much better without the frustration of backtracking and hunting for the shards (often involving shouting at the game because you can't run/jump up that hill).  I cheated the shards in for my second playthrough (so I could go to the Oasis), but ignoring the shards has made the game so much better and less frustrating.  The Astrariums are at least fun and don't involve (too much) backtracking.

I can live with astrariums. Puzzles are cozy. You have to be in the mood of course. But that is not a problem as you naturally need a break from all the action.

The shards are boring. Very boring. They are only created to guide you through a tour. The goal is to have you wander about the maps to see every spot there is. A perk given to the map designers: "See how great my design is?"

Planet scanning in Mass Effect was a bore like that has never been seen. It was extremely boring. I felt they were only created to steal my time so that the developers could say people loved to play their game for countless hours. Truth is they were bored for countless hours.

The shards are a pain in the butt but the rewards are just good enough to warrant the suffering. 20 to all elemental resistances is huge on nightmare when the deadliest things are elemental magics.

Honestly I wish there was a mod that let you auto gain all the shards after finding them with the ocularums instead of having to backtrack across the entire region.

I like puzzles.  The simple astariums were fun.  The ones on the Coast were not in the context of playing the RPG.  I could solve them, there are some rules of thumb like starting at the points with the most vertices,

That... is not the right rule of thumb.

Are LI's considered a feature? Because I could use more sadistic LI's...

The astrological puzzles are actually kind of cool, and fairly rare... the shards though, those are painful. I'm pretty much annoyed by any sidequest with zero dialogue that gets you "Quest complete" in the top of your screen.

Varrick's 48 books was tedious as hell. Varrick didn't even comment on me finding them. Nobody did.

I did all Astrariums and all shards in my first playthrough, now I'm on my fourth playthrough and I haven't bothered with any of it since.

"Sadistic"...? Some features can be annoying but that's all they are.

The "planet scanning" is now a good feature due to the ability to see the highlighted items in the radar. I like it. - except that it also shows ladders and other non collectible items; these should show up in a different color or something.

I love the astrariums.

I completely agree that the Oasis is a real pain to navigate. I don't like it at all. In other areas, I like the jumping puzzles to get to some shards. They are not frequent and not that difficult to achieve. - But the oasis is damn annoying.

The 48 books is a completely uninteresting and unappealing quest.

I do not like drastic puzzles either. Puzzles and riddles are part of RPG since the dawn, they just should be meant for side quest not main storylines ever. Some people like them some dont be nuetral cater to both.

loved the astrarium but the shards were terrible. I would welcome more puzzles and less recovering mission as optional quests in future games.

I.... found them fun.  The shards I could do without, but I really liked the astrarium puzzles.

I found them fun too! Love the Astrariums, they provide a welcome change in pace every now and again.

And the shards are great for encouraging exploration of maps. The ones in the Forbidden Oasis are particularly rewarding to find, considering the maze-like landscape. And then opening the doors with them...

Really don't see what the OP is complaining about - to each their own, I guess.

I like both of them.  Astraria are fun and usually not too difficult to figure out if you take a moment to assess before starting.  I can definitely see how shards could get really annoying, but I enjoy them quite a bit and find that they provide an extra bit of incentive to explore the world more thoroughly.  Some of them are obnoxious, like the one on the rocks near the Hinterlands dragon area, but the occasional frustration isn't too big of a deal for me.

Also, I can't remember ever finding anything game changing in the astrarium caches.

The most annoying thing about the Astrariums for me was getting Pee Wee Herman's "Connect the Dots" song stuck in my head every time I did one of them.  Anyone else have that problem, or....?

I didn't mind the shards for the most part.  Even in the Oasis, I didn't really have a problem finding them.  I got them all without even really trying or paying attention to what I was doing.  I just... did it.  No big deal.  My girlfriend found that incredible annoying, since she really struggled with that map.  Of course, I enjoy exploring, including climbing and jumping around like an idiot.  I've also played Guild Wars 2 a lot and completely explored every single map in that game, so this kind of thing is second nature to me now I suppose.

Best advice about DA:I (after leave the ****** Hinterlands) is:

It's so easy to see if you can run up a ledge, just ask yourself one question:

Does it have vegetation?

If yes, you can run up it.

If no, you can't.

(for the Western Approach: Does it have rocks? can't. Is it sand? Yes you can)

The only place the shards are a pain is in the Exalted Plains. Not only are many difficult to get to, three of them don't spawn properly. In all other areas the shards are easy enough to locate and retrieve.

Personally, I found the shards in the Oasis the most annoying.
