Outside of things to do after you finished the game.

There is no narrative around the dragon's. There's not even something saying they could be linked to arch demons or Corypheus. The first one I encountered in the Hinterlands. It kicked my ass and I ran away. The second one was sitting atop a ruined castle in an area which name I forgot. Then there is the scientist in the Western Approach, who just seems obsessed and there is no reason for me to go along in his obsession.

I only started killing some of them after the story was done. I had to look up the levels of these dragons online because there is no indication anywhere else. I still don't understand how the enemy levelling works in this game. It doesn't line up with the story or the area's.

The only dragon of significance was Corypheus's pet and I understood why I was fighting it.

It just left me really confused. The dragon's didn't lock off any area's. I'm not even asking them to be story related, but at least add some lore to it. Now it seemed like "Oh yeah, it's called Dragon Age, let's throw in some more dragon's. Skyrim sold well and it had many dragon's, so let's do that."

Bull's dialog and excitment over it is enough but, that aside, you get great crafting materials from them and, the ones in EDL are part of a quest there. Besides, it's a high dragon, that's always the ultimate kill in a Dragon Age Game and, now we get to kill 10 of them.

Well, you have to go to Frederick if you want to face that one high dragon. They drop some decent look and there's always the trophy/achievement(if it works)

No incentive? Dude, I need the street cred!

What am I to say to the Hero of Ferelden and the Champion of Kirkwall later, when we meet for drinks in the bar? Both killed dragons, what great feat have I accomplished?

Corypheus? Please. Hawke killed him, too. No biggie.

But now I have killed 10 of the beasts, they have to acknowledge my greatness. Hah.

... yeah, no idea really. You need them for crafting materials and half of them sit in the way, so you have to take them out to complete quests... Tomb of Fairel for example.

I don't like the idea of continuing to play after the final boss is dead. It's final, eh?

Other than this?

It depends on how much of a completionist you are.  Killing some of them lets you finish location quests.  One of the Emprise dragons has to be killed in order to gather all shards in the area.  The high level ones also drop good loot and crafting materials.  Killing dragons also opens up a few war table missions.

It's not related to the main story, but there are a lot of side quest incentives.  Plus, they're good practice for fighting the one (or two) plot dragons later.

My Inquisitor also waited to post-campaign before hunting them, and chose to eliminate those that were a danger and snacking on the surrounding folks. This may not work as motivation for every character, but works for this one.

That's not story.

Why does there need to be story? Lots of people in real life go hunting for fun, and kill animals just because they're there. There's no revenge story, or quest to find a magical item or any other story you can think of. Just straight up killing animals because they're there.

But... but... it's a dragon! It's tradition to go on a quest to find a magic sword to slay the dragon and rescue the princess!

Also... you claimed these regions for the Inquisition, so you better protect the people there. They do comment on you slaying the dragon btw.

Uumm...tactical cam shows level as well as weaknesses and resistances... And you can activate and look at stuff from a reasonable distance... Do you not use the tactical cam? o-o

If you don't think that the battle itself, the challenge and glory is reward enough to bring one of these magnificent creatures down, then sir you are neiter

neither a roleplayer

neither a gamer

and i doubt you will ever have fun in a game again

if you are looking for instant gratification buy a dog

great men don't do things because they are expecting rewards for it, great men do things because they f*ing can!

He could avoid killing them for roleplaying reason. Not wanting to kill such a magnificent beast needlessly etc. Not everyone roleplays a character who just kills everything.

This.

I am an Alpha Male (sometimes an Alpha Female). They think they are an Alpha, therefore we must fight and they must die. A reason as old as time itself. Any other reason is icing on the Alpha cake.

For experience, Exclusive Gear, and combat satisfaction. I liked them a great deal more this round, Gamordan Stormrider and a couple others were more unique than the dragons from last time - reminded me a teensy bit of the dragons in Chrono Cross.

But you have a point that developers might want to at least find a way of tying them into the story, or making them into something besides an optional boss.

I happen to like the dragons. But the one thing I kept waiting to see was the opportunity to mount their heads in some of that enormous empty space in the grand hall.

The reasons to kill them are basically:

The scene with Iron Bull

Top-tier crafting materials

The achievement trophies

Otherwise they are completely optional.  WHich is not a bad or good thing.  It's just a thing.
