Is tempest similar to reaver in playstyle? Also is it viable to play 2 handed templar(me)/solas/varric or cole/vivienne on hard?

I did comment on the tempest but the spoiler code much like the other forum editor options don't work at all. Reaver is like a black-out self-sacrifice rage filled warrior. Tempest is a rogue with elemental buffs. The only thing that makes them similar is that the reaver you get as an example is a 2-handed warrior and their defense sucks to say the least. So in effect they are as squishy as a rogue. That is my character now in my 2nd play through. I have to figure out the niche of the 2 hander, but I've seen no reason they can't be a Templar. I changed Blackwall to a 2-handed champion.

After that I will force myself to be a mage. I love the mage animations, but due to correct balancing in this game they have to play like hidey bitches. Even though every class can be figured out within a party on one playthrough, you won't actually until it's your main character... I think it's because that forces you to concentrate on it, instead of letting them die or pushing them to the back of the party pile. This is also one of the main reasons why that on your 2nd or 3rd playthrough you are in command of your whole party. You look at that "other" class with a purpose rather than a chore.

You'd think there'd be a trade off with some noticeable dps advantage on 2-handing it, but there isn't over a shield. I think it was planned for them to have all the weakness and knockdown volume, but it doesn't play out that way... you'd best have charging bull or roll on them and be prepared to fight your opponents from the rear. I'll know more when I use this class as my main. I can't say the Reaver appeals to me at this point. They are already squishy enough, never mind blood-letting.

I will say if you want to experiment with skill trees on a few characters the easiest way to carry the load in the party is to have 2 shielded warriors. Easiest path to start. That should give you enough wiggle room to construct your mutant.

You can also make a save right before a good battle and use a medallion to reset skills on your party until you got something good. Nothing to say you can't keep that save forever and keep refining your idea of skills.

SPOILER SECTION BELOW THIS LINE

Having 3 ranged characters puts a lot of stress on the one trying to hold the line. You'll have to think of interesting ways to bring some defensive front. You may not like it in the end, because in my dealings you end up running backwards in circles. On the other hand I've used 4 rogues :D  and I'm not gonna spoil the game for ya but you know... yes you do... now you do, because I've been to the hissing wastes and back again without raising an eyebrow. Now... what about that palace... hmmm. ;)
