I can only imagine the pressure we put on if more authors are reading but then again nonw of our comments have been bad. We may by critical at times but we're kind more or less.

There used to be a website (a long time ago) called Godawful Star Trek Fanficition. Like, the late 1990s maybe? Anyway, if memory serves, they were a collection of snarky, semi-professional writers who would lampoon terrible fanfiction. It was hilarious. They'd call out Mary Sues, atrocious grammar, awkward tense changes, attempts at smut where it was clear the author had never had sex and/or everything that had learned about sex came from a bad porno, etc. etc.

Anyone remember this?

Now that website was unkind. But hilarious.

Now that I think about it, it seems to me fanfiction as a whole has gotten better in the last decade or so. There are still very few excellent stories, but there are a lot more good ones, and not as much vile dreck as I remember. Or maybe I've become better at searching and filtering. I dunno.

Personally I think you just gotten better at filtering through the hogwash that is on that site. I know for a fact that I still find some pointless nonsense sometimes & I've been on & off fanfiction for over 10 years now. Of course my taste have changed over the years and I don't go to adultfanfiction anymore (that site is a hot mess now or maybe it always was). I never was a Star Trek fan so I never heard of that site but from the stories that I keep hearing/seeing on the forums here I think I should just stay away from all that lol.

Done. :)

So, question for my fellow cass/varric shippers: Who do you think would recognize their attraction first? Who do you think would confess/act on it first? Those don't have to be the same person, of course.

I think Cassandra would be the first to notice her attraction to Varric. I think she's good at staying honest with herself, even with perhaps uncomfortable (at first) truths.

Varric is a good ole softy on the inside and all, but I think he also is more practiced at lying to himself. Not even necessarily on purpose, just that he'd be likely to dismiss it at first. He's also a writer who loves and knows a good story when he sees it... You'd think that might make him more inclined to notice his own romance blooming, but maybe he'd actually dismiss his feelings at first b/c of that very fact. Cus this is reality, not a story, and "two people who hate each other" being about to kiss is more storyline than reality to him.

As for who would act on it first: Varric. Once he realized it or was pushed into realizing it by interested/amused 3rd parties. lol

I can't see Cass initiating a relationship b/c she's shy about that part of her heart. And, as she says herself, every time she tries to reach out to people on an emotional level, they never take her meaning. Past experience makes her gun-shy about these kinda things.  She's more likely to throw herself into work/training/whatever she deems as a higher priority than risk rocking the boat if she doesn't have at least a solid reason to think she has a chance. (This is of course subject to change in the case of unforeseen circumstance, such as near death experiences, delirium-inducing fevers, or being drunk off her rear on Bull's "special" alcohol.)

Varric seems more comfortable in his skin about this stuff. Even if he does have bad past history with relationships... >_> Once he figured it out, I think he almost wouldn't be able to not act on it, somehow, someway. He'd be unable to help himself.

Cassandra would probably be the first to notice it, but wouldn't really know how to approach the subject (since she's woefully unprepared for the Inquisitor's open pursuit of her) and would probably mangle it as badly as Aveline if she tried to take the initiative?

Varric would also be the last to notice that anyone has an actual attraction to him, due to his being hung up on Bianca and lack of belief that he's probably going to have a happy ending when it comes to love? Besides, who doesn't think that he's unwittingly been friendzoning a fem!Hawke for years without realising it, since you can flirt with him in DA2?

Sad, yet true.

And I'm not sure anyone can mangle it as bad as Aveline... but I'm sure Cass can give her a run for her money now that you mention it. lol

You never cease to amaze me. Beautiful job as always! I wouldn't count out dwarven friend out when it comes to who would acknowledge the attraction first. I'm sure he would realize the change in their relationship (I consider him someone with an above average level of empathy) but may in fact be hesitant because of well, Bianca. She is an obstacle that is for sure.

Did you ever see the Farscape finale/conclusion movie?  Aeryn Sun (aka Morrigan!) is pregnant and goes into labour while they're fighting off baddies.  I don't remember most of the story but I vividly remember that bit of badassery.  I expect Cassandra would be much the same.

The best part is that she keeps on fighting/firing her weapon pretty much the entire time. Crichton insists he can cover for her (so she can give birth) and she replies with, "Shooting makes me feel better!" Pretty much all of Aeryn Sun's verbal exchanges are gold in that last miniseries. When Crichton tells her that on Earth it could take days for a baby to be born, Aeryn tells him, "I have killed men for less."

I think Cassandra and Aeryn would get along grandly.

As an avid fanfiction reader, this would be my preferred way to read it. Nothing worse then following a story, only to have the author say she/he is taking an haitus or just flat out abandoning it without saying anything :( On the other hand, I can see where posting one chapter at time is easier for the author. I haven't written in years (and only then for myself), but since DA:I, I've got a bug up my butt to write a story. Unfortunately I am stuck on the opening sentence and I'm sitting here going durr. So I have mad respect for people who write fanfiction or otherwise.

Sometimes it can take a while to get the entire thing written, depending on length. Every time I want to write the entire story before I start posting, I start getting messages asking for the sequel. Then more messages. Then more. Then asking when. Someone even messaged me saying that since I hadn't done anything about the sequel in months that they were going to write it for me and outlined some of what they wanted to do. At that point, my beta told me to just give in and start posting, and keep up with staying far ahead of schedule in terms of what's on ff.net/AO3 and what I've got written and proofed. It's worked mostly well so far. Though that one reader who threatened to write it for me is still never happy with anything I do plot/character wise and I can't for the life of me figure out why they still read my stories.

Anyway, just thought I'd explain a bit from a writer perspective why fic might be released in a serial format instead of all at once, even if it is (or is mostly) entirely written.

About having a bug to write a DAI fic and being stuck on the opening sentence, can you just skip it for now? Like, if you have an idea, a scene, a small moment, or even something as simple as an exchange of dialogue in mind, maybe just write that down and see what rolls from it?

Oh, MiSTing! I hadn't thought about that in forever. I think I'm actually still a subscriber to alt.startrek.creative, since I occasionally get digest emails. I think it's (or it was) run by the person who had the most trek fic MiSTed ever.

I think filtering ability has more to do with the quality of what fic one reads. When it was all printed fanzines, you got what you got, and no filtering at all aside from the 'zines editors. Older sites (trekiverse, gossamer) didn't have really anything for filtering aside from mostly character and genre specifics. There were the ASC awards for trek fic (I'm sure other fandoms had awards, right?) that could help you find the better stories. But the options lately really help with finding the stuff you're really interested in. AO3's tag system is my favorite by far.

Or it could be that we're all better at hitting the back button way sooner and quicker than ever before.

First of all, if you aren't a teacher, may I suggest you've missed your calling? I can almost imagine my high school literature teacher saying something similar as he tried to get a bunch of scatter-brained freshman to focus on the topic at hand.

(This is a compliment, BTW, in case that wasn't apparent. :) )

Secondly, and this is a tremendous dodge of the question, but I think really so much hinges on each character's unexplored past, that any and all answers could wind up being valid.

Cassandra, for example, had just the one lover, Galyan. For a woman in her late 30s, that is...not a lot. So, why? Did the relationship just last a lot longer than the game implied? Did she decide at some point that a relationship was incompatible with her duties? Did the relationship end, and for one reason or another, she just never had another suitor? Etc, etc.

Same thing with Varric. Are he and Bianca truly in love or is she just a convenient excuse to never be vulnerable? What are the mechanics of their relationship? Does he internalize, or does she expect him, to physically be faithful to her?

Just my brief thoughts, but I think specific answers to these and other questions could really result in any outcome you wanted.

The only thing I dont like about these fan fictions is sometimes I forget what happened last time by the time the new update is posted. Thankfully, most of them aren't very plot heavy and I'm a quick reader, but
I really should wait until after they're complete...

But then I guess that would take half the fun out of it.

I feel the same way about it. I get so impatient, I really want to know what's going to happen next so bad. Then I wonder if I should just wait until the story's finished. But whenever a next chapter comes out I just can't refrain from reading it right away  .

More rest in the warmest places, BTW: http://archiveofouro...hapters/6919628

And the author must've read this thread or something, because she provides a calendar and then says something to the effect that one shouldn't tie oneself into knots over the dates, they're there for reference. I was kinda hoping for an unreliable narrator type reveal that's like "WHOA! I never saw that coming!" but I guess the kibosh was put on that kind of outlandish speculation. Rats.

Oh wow.

Thank the maker our little community has so much intelligent & creative people in here. Hunter it is very true that we know very little about either of their past. I'll admit I completely forgot about Galyan even though I saw the movie. Anyone Cassandra's age that lacks....erm experience would definitely be in love with the ideal of being swept away by raw passion but hesitant with the emotional aspect (I can personally relate to that lol). I think this is the beauty of this pairing, since we don't know much everyone is given creative freedom. These are the pairings I love!

I'm trying to look around LJ for fanfiction since there's also the amazing community there, but there are so many unfilled prompts in the DA kink LJ, sadly. :c Aside from Perfectly Novel, there's another fill where they had an accidental date, but it's just one chapter in and barely anything has happened, so IDK if it's worth linking. *shrugs*

It's such a waste, though. There are so MANY good prompts on the pin board. Here's the Cass/Varric pinboard for the DA kink LJ, you guys might find them interesting.

(And being quite the Solavellan fan too, I have to say that I'm really, really really overwhelmed with the amount of smut for those two. Like, dude, we got to be the most sexually frustrated fans ever. I'm crying to myself now.)

While I'm looking around for more fics, I found a thing or two yesterday. Some of you may like it, idk. (I'm literally just posting the stuff I found that haven't been shared yet, omg. I'm kind of desperate for shipping material here.)

Sketches? Sketches!

Some NSFW dom!Cass sketches I found:

I'm sure I found more sketches, but sadly I didn't exactly reblog them in my tumblr so IDK where they are right now ;; If they come up, I'll go link them, unless someone beats me to it ;;

And have you guys read mythal-rising's drabbles? They're really great and well-written.

Re: love of the written word, I need to ask a question

Is it just me, or is there a loooooot of description in that fic?

And on description more generally...is that regarded as a good thing or a bad thing, or just a personal taste thing? A lot of you seem pretty knowledgeable about that kind of thing (much more so than me). I find when I'm reading fics with a lot of description, I get really impatient and irritated and I'm like "Yeah, blah blah blah, it was a lovely spring day, get on with it."

I mean, I'm not adverse to description when it's essential to the story, but you can tell me we're in the woods on a breezy spring day. I don't want, or need, 2 paragraphs about the particular trees, or the wonderful shades of green, or the way the sun is shining in a clearing, etc etc. Its just very, very boring to me.

So, my question is, is my being impatient/irritated about that kind of stuff kind of signify I'm an unsophisticated reader? Like someone who prefers a print of Dogs Playing Poker to an original Rembrandt? (That was a pretty pathetic comparison, but you know what I mean.)

Oh, I totally know what you mean. Not sure if you know the movie "Das Boot" (link, it is really a great movie, and highly disturbing) but the basis for this movie is a book which I tried to read. Well I gave up pretty much at the beginning because the description of the sea just took about 2 pages or so and I considered that waaaay too much detail. If the authors of our beloved fanfiction would describe the stone walls of Skyhold in such a detailed way... naw, I wouldn't read it.

But this story is basically only about Varric and Cassandra and their feelings and thoughts and a bit of interaction with the others (but even that only when it comes to their relationship). There is no real plot, I'd say, unless the two of them getting together is the plot. I actually enjoy getting captivated in it and I can relate to their feelings/doubts, more than I could relate to a description of forests/seas/meadows. So, I like reading it the way it is and I also enjoy reading a lot of the other fics :).

I guess "each to its own" is also true for fiction. And it would be bad if it wasn't like that. More variety this way!

probably it's a personal taste matter... i'm even not a person to tell you how to write, since english isn't even my mother tongue x]

but i like fics with the moderate amount of descriptions, that allow me to visualize the surroundings, emotions, mood. i detest with passion fics that are written with a total lack of finesse, imagination, and look like primary school-grader's story.

so yeah, keep dem descriptions, but don't overdo this ;p
