It's likely that all those reasons (our age, and Cassandra/Varric's ages, and the weirdness of the pairing) contribute? Particularly since Cassandra/Varric doesn't necessarily fall into the wish fulfilment category? Or it's at least less obvious if it does.

I think why I'm interested in the possibility of them as a couple is because they disagree, they don't get along at all, and that changes slowly. They grow closer, as real people do. They know each other, they're very aware of their faults as people, they're not blinded by affection. It would also be a second love. Varric had Bianca, Cassandra had Regalyan, and neither of those romances worked out well (putting it a bit lightly). A second romance, especially for a couple who are mature, is all the more lovely because it's unexpected, because it's the second time around.

Yes!  They both may be romantics in their own way but I think they'd get into with their eyes open.  I was thinking the other day that 'Love is Only Love' from Hello, Dolly could be their theme song, in a way.

I feel the same way about it. I remember, as a child I used to imagine stuff beyond what one or 2 of my favourite TV shows would show. Back then, no internet and I had no clue that there was anything like fanfiction or fanart in general. I had to come up with my own stuff, obviously So, the www is doing me a great favour here! :)

I am so glad I'm not the only one. It also started for me as a young girl, watching shows or movies, and thinking, what if? I would have these stories(more like movies) going on in my head, and having my favorite characters doing things that I wished they could do. I still do this, it's almost a habit for me, I can't not do this.

I totally agree on your posting!
Hunter, it wasn't a criticism of your work as a writer. Sometimes the readers just wish the characters would act differently. But it is not about what I or anybody else wishes your characters would do, it's your story and how you tell it. Otherwise we wouldn't enjoy reading liek we do! And in my opinion, you tell your story very well. But you know, just as long as they get the happy ending (jk ;) ).

Oh, ok. I didn't mind either way. I'm open for negative criticism because I know that unlike a lot of people, I'm not a literature/composition/journalism/whatever major and outside of what I got in high school (which was longer ago than I like to admit) I have no clue on rules for writing or whatever. I guess I'm weird. Most people want to know how great they are and I'm like, "Yeah, I know it stinks and I have no clue why anyone's reading it and I'm so sorry for disappointing all of you."

I'm sure there's probably a technical term for this and I should seek help...

And the other person looked at me, totally seriously, and said, "No, no, I've honestly never thought any of those things."

Pj6eA.png

I've made up my own adventures for my favorite tv show characters since I can remember even watching TV. (They even started with self-inserts, so the early stages of fanfiction? lol) My first fanfiction I read on the internet was for The Pretender, cus Jared and Miss Parker were just not moving along at all the way I thought they should. And my first attempt to write fanfiction was for Guy Williams' Zorro, which I used to catch in the Disney Vault at like 11pm on weeknights. lol

My family is exactly like this person you are quoting. They don't get why I get so into stories. And yet I still can't wrap my head around ppl NOT thinking "what ifs" about their favorite stories. It just feels so natural to do so, to me.

Or does Elizabeth just keep the riff-raff out and everyone is like, "Oh, this is where the adults are hanging out? Cool!"

Well, a friend *did* tell me one of my responses to the people coming in here and posting the "No." gifs sounded a bit like Vivienne...

which I must admit, I am rather proud of. lol

I guess I scared some of the haters off? And the rest mostly lost interest.  /shrug

I am very glad everyone likes the environment we've managed to create here, though. :)

@hunter111: You are writing Varric perfectly, as well as Cassandra. I think the characterization is spot on. And you also back it up in the story, giving it internal consistency. As long as you do that, then anything you have them do or say or act like in that framework is natural. You're fine, stop worrying so much. :) (And hurry up with the next chapter. :P)

I've been into fan fiction since like season 2 of Star Trek DS9 when I thought Kira and Odo should get together. Eventually they did in like season 6 and it became canon. Yay! I think I also shipped Scully and Mulder pretty hard until the X-Files jumped the shark.

I would totally go out and have a drink with every regular poster on this board, because you're all awesome. Unfortunately, since I live in the southern USA, I doubt that will happen. :). However, the fact I love all of you is kinda discomfiting because there's a saying in poker that if you look around and don't see a sucker, the sucker is you. Is there something similar for social groups? Like if you look around and everyone is awesome and nice, you're the jerk everyone wants to get rid of? :)

Is the Regalyan thing really a tragic romance? I was under the impression they were lovers at one time but ended it a looong time ago for...reasons, whatever those reasons were. Do the rest of you think she was with him till the conclave?

No, she says herself that they hadn't been together in years. I find it tragic since she sounds genuinely upset at his passing- it's possible they had remained friends?

It's interesting that she mentions only Regalyan when trying to talk to Varric, since she says they've not been together in years it makes me wonder if he was the only real romantic connection she'd had, or if he was the only important one.

And southerners unite, btw. ;)  I guess our southern hospitality may also be bleeding into the thread from time to time? lol

For me, Buffy was my first foray into fan fiction. As for DS9, I totally shipped Kira/Dukat (I have unusual tastes in shipping) ...you know before they made him bat sh** crazy..haha. Mulder/Scully all the way, baby!

I agree with AlleluiaElizabeth, as long as your story's consistent within itself, a little iffy characterization can be excused (god knows this happens to me).

This is a very nice thread, friendly without being obsequious, and accepting of criticism as long as it's constructive. Seeing new posts in it always makes me happy- seems like everyone's got something interesting to say.

I'm pretty sure during the romance/sex scene, Cass says something like, "I've only ever been with one other man before..." so to me, I would think he was the only other one, period. I guess.

I never saw the Kira/Dukat thing myself, but that's cool. I miss DS9.

High five, fellow transplanted northerner! I love the winters here, but the summers. ::disgusted noise:: I miss being able to go outside and do physical activities between 10am and 7 pm without dying of heatstroke.

Imagine person A lightly tracing “I love you” over and over again on person B’s back, assuming that person B is asleep.

When person A is lying on their back, getting ready to sleep, person B moves closer and wraps their arms around person A,

whispering softly, “I love you too.” Bonus if that’s the first time person A has ever declared their love for person B.

MY FIRST THOUGHT - DAMN ME, THAT'S CASSARRIC!

AND MAKER KILL ME IF PERSON A ISN'T CASS AND PERSON B ISN'T VARRIC! TuT

Again, for me, it's always the opposites attract thing, kind of like you have with Cass/Varric. You have two people who are nothing alike, and may even hate each other. But things change or they see another side of each other. Esp with Dukat/ Kira, there was so much bad history, but there were a couple episodes where Kira saw another side to Dukat(you know before they kinda massacred his character for me), that it got me thinking that, what if. I love seeing people overcome obstacles and see something worth loving in the other.

If you're trying to convince the folks on the Cassandra board, good luck. I think you'd have more success trying to convince Jenny McCarthy vaccines don't cause autism.

I have to agree. If people are going to immediately dismiss a thing, you're going to have a hard time convincing them that your view is valid. Even if it's only over something as small as this.

If you want to present an argument for it, cite the progression of their relationship throughout the game? If they can slowly become friends, it's not nonsensical to assume that they might become romantically involved. They are both loyal to their friends, stubborn, and funny. They might disagree, but that's an important part of any relationship- you have to be able to talk to your partner, to have someone who won't blindly agree that you're right all the time.

You're fine. I mean, you might not be the best person writing for this fandom, but you're far from the worst.

The best piece of advice I could give you would be to re-write your first chapter. It's so random, and the rest of the stuff is much better but I bet the first chapter turns some people off.

There also the thing about them not originally being romance options
