Still haven't played ME, but I do love when unexpected pairings become canon (if they're properly set up). I'm sorry about the main Cassandra thread, AWTEW.

You're fine. I mean, you might not be the best person writing for this fandom, but you're far from the worst.
The best piece of advice I could give you would be to re-write your first chapter. It's so random, and the rest of the stuff is much better but I bet the first chapter turns some people off.
Thank you for your honesty.

Its alright they were mostly civil, a bit frustrating, but otherwise they were good. one of those agree to disagree things.

Trail through the murk and muck my friends. Cassandra the seeker's probably gone through places worse then the mire and crestwood, while Varric's fought Corypheus twice and lived to tell the tail. If they don't like the thought that other people like to pair imaginary characters together because it makes them happy and have to go **** on their parade then they are the one's who are anal cactus fuckers.

Oh, I totally would. I used to live in the pseudo-south for a while and it wasn't too bad, but now I live in the Deep South and ugh. Summer sucks.
If you're trying to convince the folks on the Cassandra board, good luck. I think you'd have more success trying to convince Jenny McCarthy vaccines don't cause autism.
Quite. I ventured in there a week or so ago and I'm not in a hurry to go back. There are some...unusual characters hanging around there (I think/hope some are just trolls.) But I saw a comment about how everyone who likes Cass/Varric must have really disturbed and broken home lives and I just rolled my eyes. It seems like opinions vary on whether Cass and Varric really truly hate/dislike each other and how much of their anger is both real and long-lasting. If you believe that they have nothing in common, that they genuinely dislike each other and that they stay angry and possibly violent with each other throughout the game and their relationship, then seeing them having a romantic relationship will seem kind of sick. Personally, I didn't feel that their interactions stayed in that angry/distrusting zone the whole game, so for me having them in a relationship is not inherently toxic.
Certainly, the whole 'they fight all the time, that means they're secretly in love' thing is a well-worn trope at this stage (it's pretty much the whole premise of the film Bringing up Baby, for example, and I want to say one of the Shakespeare comedies, maybe Much Ado about Nothing?) Now I don't know how much the banter bug will have affected my perceptions or how much I was even affected, but I didn't get the impression they stayed quite as bickering as time went on, although Varric does still know how to rile Cass up and she is very passionate so she reacts strongly to teasing.

Laurelinde, that was a lovely fic. *sighs happily*
You know, I've never understood why people feel they have to tear others down over things like this. So we ship Cassandra/Varric. Big damn deal. It doesn't affect them or their headcanons or their game.
Arguing because they secretly like eachother is one of THE most well worn tropes in all of creation. It's found EVERYWHERE (Much Ado About Nothing is the right play, you're thinking of Benedick and Beatrice, who bicker constantly and are in love by the end), so it's not unreasonable to find it here. Besides that, their banter does become friendlier as the game goes on. At the end of the book scene, after Varric's sassed Cassandra and is walking away, he says "Completely worth it", and I really expected their party banter to involve more mocking. But it never came up. Instead, all he did was make Cassandra happy with the latest Swords and Shields.

And that's my share of fluffiness right there for tonight
thank you Laurelinde.
You know, I wondered what drew me to those two, and I think their age and time of life is one of the main thing. They are no more spring chicken, theirs is not a youthful passion and to my mind there is a "last chance for romance" in their relationship that really click with me, I can relate much more to that considering my own age is close enough to their.
Oh, and for the record I would buy you all a round as well, but either you or me would have to cross the Atlantic Ocean ![]()

I agree 100% people should enjoy the game however they want in the privacy of their own home an/or their own heads, but I think people just look for reasons to go nuts about something. Look at all the angst about the different romance mods coming out. People are acting like somehow changing romance options is like spitting in their face.
(FWIW, I think this is partially the issue with the folks in the Cass thread.)

I think part of the problem is emotions- when we're emotionally invested in a thing/concept/whatnot, any criticism or disagreement feels like something personal. Though someone might say "I feel this way about it, and not that way" or "I really really intensely dislike that", what you feel is "You're wrong. This thing you enjoy is wrong." and the natural response is to strike back in defense of yourself and the thing you love.
In this case, it doesn't really matter. The people in the Cassandra thread that choose to fight instead of saying "Well, I personally can't see it but good on you." probably feel the same way about their ships as we do.
The important thing is to realize this and to not attack.
ANYWAYS.
Has anyone noticed Vehlr posting new fics on AO3? Because good lord. I might not like the whole "Princess" nickname thing but they're a damn fine author.

And if you run across a story you really like, why not post a link? It's easy to skip over things on fanfic.net and AO3 anymore because there's a lot more stuff. I used to post the links but my taste is not altogether the best (sorry for some of those, ahem)

See, I wouldn't mod Dorian at all, or any of the other canon gay characters, and I understand why people who are gay would have a problem with the bi!Dorian mod. His sexuality is important to his storyline, and who he is as a character. On top of that, the act of changing someone who is gay into someone who isn't is way worse than modding a straight character to be bi, or gay.
I was going to list all my current favourite AO3 fics, then realized that that would be a long damn post. So here's a link to my bookmarks on AO3

I really don't understand people that get all agressive over a ship or a mod. There are enough mods for DA:O that were just not for me but oh well, nobody is forced to install them. Nobody is forced to install a mod for Cass, Dorian or who-/whatever. It's a game, after all. And as a RPG, it's as versatile as the people playing it. People have headcanons about everything and if you don't like specific ones, you'll avoid the threads. Simple as that. There are enough other things on this planet you can get upset about which make more sense.
Honestly, I can't even remember how I started to ship Cassandra and Varric. I guess it was the dynamics of the 2 and when I found a handful of fan fics and this thread I was lost to this ship
.
Anyways, I found this on AO3 today, and I enjoyed reading it: http://archiveofouro...g/works/3442418
Dorian is gold. “About that book you wrote: Swords and Swingers –“ That had me laughing out loudly

That's interesting. I personally don't have a problem with any mods people want to make since it is their own personal games and head canons.
I can't agree with those people who say, "The mere existence of X is threatening to me/makes me feel bad, so please desist in doing X in the privacy of your own home."
Maybe I'm on an island with that, though. Dunno.

The problem there is that these things aren't happening in the privacy of people's homes, but in the public forum of the internet, where they can be seen by everyone.

How is that an argument? "I'm sorry, I'm an atheist, so could all major religions please take down their websites on the Internet, due to the historically persecuted nature of atheists. Mentions of religions make me feel bad." That's...ridiculous.
I mean, yes, presumably the mod exists somewhere on the Internet, but it's mere existence should not be ipso fact threatening unless I was looking for something to be upset about.
