Out of curiosity, why do people feel so vehemently about this?

I mean, for example, I never saw Anders/Fenris myself, but meh, if it made people happy, fine.

I mean this pairing isn't obviously wrong in the sense of if someone suggested Kieran/Cassandra so I guess I don't get the "ewww, no way" thing. A "nah, I don't see it?" Yah, get that. But the "no f-ing way" reaction? Why?

I never saw that myself. One was more than happy to kill the other & the other wanted to send the other back to slavery. At least Cassie mentions the chest hair.

Wow, Hard to be a Gentleman really is shaping up to be a great fic so far. It even covers the "Varric lying about Hawke" thing this chapter. Pretty well done, I think. I like the kinda more serious approach the author took.

By the end of the game, I'd say Cass and Varric are at least friends, right? It seems that way to me. I mean once the Hawke thing is out of the way, they manage to, say, play wicked grace together fine. Its not much of a stretch to ship them, imo.  (And I *am* glad I'm not the only person who sees the potential.:) )

Was talking with a friend about this recently, and realized Varric could even fulfill some/all of the stuff Cass asks for in her romance in-game. Especially the poetry part, being a writer and all. I mean poetry isn't the same as prose, I know. And he thinks his romantic writing is his worst, an attitude that might bleed over if he even tried poetry. But still. I think it could be really amusing to see him try at least. And the outcome would ultimately be heartfelt, regardless.

I'm not necessarily asking for it be canon, guys... I mean, personally I'd think it awesome if it was. But this thread, as I say in the opening post, is asking if there are any other people who like the idea of them together like I do and want to talk about it.

As far as canon goes, Dorian ships it. That's good enough for me if that's all I ever get in the game. lol But canon leaves us with a lot to build off of in fanon. :)

That latest chapter of "Its hard to be a gentleman" was good. I definitely preferred the more serious approach to the Hawke situation. The Varric/Cassie pairing was something I never considered until I saw this thread but I'm totally on board with it now. I can't wait for the next chapter of this fic.

I think the reason I do like Varric and Cassandra is because they are actually very similar people . They both care about the people around them and doing the right thing. I think they're also people who don't want to show the "real" them-Cassandra I suspect because of her position and past, Varric I suspect because he is actually a deeply insecure individual.

I think the thing that makes the tension between them are that their outside facades are very different-Varric presents a facade of a wisecracking devil-may-care jokester and Cassandra is aggressive and angry but otherwise emotionally reserved.

So their outside facades are constantly in conflict while underneath, they are very similar.

Why won't people let this thread die and let this heretical relationship wither.

Just going out on a total limb here, but because some people like it? You evidently don't, an opinion to which you're more than entitled, but why don't you actually address some particular posts you take exception to, so we can have a dialogue?

Or we can just randomly insult one another, thereby keeping the thread at the top of the page, but if you want to do that, let me know so I can get some more alcohol.

Fenders shipping boggles me.

They despise each other.

It's not even questionable or slap slap kiss. They would gladly kill the other. Anders actually cheers when Fenris is sent back into slavery. I just...no. So much no.

Anyway as for Varric/Cass.

Hell it's better than him and Bianca. I'll ship it.

The Varric & Dorian discussion about Cassandra was Bioware trolling fans that make smutty fan fiction. The fans have a tendency to take characters that are opposites, the ones written to hate each other, ex. Jack & Miranda, and turn it into some sort of surreptitious forbidden love. Varric tells Dorian, 'No. Two people disliking each other does not equate to kissing (it’s more like, does not equate to a hidden fetish between the two lol)’. Bioware made a similar joke with Jack and Miranda in the Citadel DLC for ME3. During the party, they start an argument at the bar, Shepard asks sarcastically if Jack and Miranda  should kiss and make up because they have such ‘sexual tension’. If you are romancing Jack, I think she says “you wish!”

I don't see Cassandra and Varric as being compatable, Varric has his idea of Bianca, Cassandra potentialy has the Inquisitor, and or she marries the chantry (lol). Not to mention Varric realy does not like Cassandra, and the dislike is mutal. They may work together, and have some respect for each other but that is it. I think the main differances between Varric and Cassandra is, Varric is a kind person, Cassandra is quite austere in character.

I really really like the idea of Cassandra/Varric. Provided you don't romance Cassandra, of course. They seem as though they balance one another out. Don't see anything wrong with it really.

I have no idea why it sounds good in my head, but it does sound good in my head and I'm in. If I get inspiration, I'll probably write a thing or two, or maybe try to draw something ;;

I don't know, it kind of works to me, I don't know why it sounds bad to others. Thing is that relationships don't really have to be sexual, yes? They could be in a romantic relationship and still act like vitriolic best buds and snark at each other lots and beat enemies to oblivion and just hug like no tomorrow afterwards while laughing and arguing about bad romance books and it still counts as a legitimate relationship.

Or maybe we just have differing definitions of a relationship? I mean, it can work lots of ways, yes? Personally, I do like the two, but I don't see them doing the do, but I do think they'd get along well and be friends and sweet bros and be pretty close and be capable of talking honestly without threatening each other if they actually tried. *shrugs* I don't know. Just my two cents right there.

I've read It's Hard Being a Gentleman when it was still a one-shot and that made me steer clear of it before (cause I wasn't expecting it to go that way okay) but now... oh gosh it's so amazing now. That take on Hawke's arrival was amazing, and does sound less played for laughs compared to the game. Definitely reading more if any comes.

The pairing has potential but the best part about pairinga like this is because there isn't much to go on in game it gives the author free reign on how to set things up. Sometimes these pairing are my favorite because of that. It is like the difference of reading a Kaidan/Shepard fic & a James/Shepard fic.

Honestly, i thought this the whole game my first play, despite stuff. I used both a fair bit and the banter, the meetings, it was definitely a possibility -if- they'd open their minds to it, imo. :D

Game says Varric/Cass won't happen because Varric already has somebody, Cass belongs to the Inquisitor, and Varric says just because people dislike each other doesn't mean they get together

Fanbase interpretation: Characters dislike each other=love

Yall people need Andraste, that's all I've got to say.

And a new pair of eyes. And ears. Maybe clear the caches on your mind. There is nothing there at all. A hypothetical here's about as useful as wondering what would happen if aliens invaded in spaceships. Just like this, it ain't happenin.

You have a better chance of that happening though than this. It wouldn't happen in a million years, and you'll need a million more to get Cass romantically involved with Varric. Sorry to burst the hell out of that bubble.

edit: Guess I had a little more to say after all, lol.

*shrug* We see potential and its intriguing. Also, I'd argue the statement that Varric and Cass "hate each other". They don't. If that were true, they'd make it obvious. They'd be like Anders and Fenris. Or like Varric was toward Talis or Sebastian. With Cassandra, yes he throws barbs at her. He jumps down her throat for bringing up Kirkwall, even though she was trying to actually bring it up for nice reasons. But that's early in their banter and they get past it. There is clearly growth between them as the game's timeline passes. They're comrades by the end.

^THIS. Especially the bolded part. That's definitely how I see them. I'd also say both are romantics at heart. With Cass we hear it outright. With Varric, well, we have his holding onto Bianca the way he has. He loves deeply and wholeheartedly.

I have no idea why it sounds good in my head, but it does sound good in my head and I'm in. If I get inspiration, I'll probably write a thing or two, or maybe try to draw something ;;

^This. I'm not particularly into the mental image of them, er... getting it on. lol But then that's not really romance to me. I mean it can be involved, sure. But its the interaction, the meeting of minds and hearts and principles, that really intrigues me. The way the two people in a pair effect one another, support the other, and make the other grow? That's the interesting part.

Not everything needs to revolve around sex. Sex is fun, sex is beautiful, sex can be romantic but it isn't everything in a relationship. Some the best stories don't even have a sex scene. I can see Its hard to be a gentleman getting to it though. Personally I don't mind the idea of them together physically but I don't mind alot of things lol. I wonder if the author ever checks these forums?
