RDA I HAVE TOTALLY READ AND ENJOYED THE POISONER'S HANDBOOK OMG YAY
*ahem*
I agree. It's a wonderful book with a lot of interesting stories about the dawn of forensic science/toxicology. Have you read The Disappearing Spoon? It's about the creation of the Periodic Table.
About the AUs- I like to see what characters would be like in different situations, and exploring AUs leads in to all kinds of opportunities for hijinx. I hadn't realized that all my long fics are AUs and all the short ones are in the canon world. I'm also just really prone to dumb ideas like "BUT WHAT IF VARRIC AND CASSANDRA WERE STUCK IN THE HONEYMOON SUITE" and for some reason it never occurs to me to stick them in a canon world inn or something?
No, no, the honeymoon suite thing is cute. And hijinx are good too. I like AUs from time to time provided they're not "all my favorite characters in high school!"
But you know we're gonna expect smut now, right?
And The Disappearing Spoon is on my list to read too. I had read some bad reviews on Amazon about The Disappearing Spoon and The Poisoner's Handbook along the lines of "OMG the chemistry is all wrong!!" and I was hesitant to try them due to that, but now that I downloaded the Poisoner's Handbook, I don't think its too bad. I mean, there's minor mistakes but the whole of the book is informative and entertaining, so, I agree...YAY!
Next on my list, though, has to be the new Kazuo Ishiguru book. I usually hate modern, critically acclaimed authors, but I really enjoyed the few books I've read by him. Have you (or anyone else) had a chance to read it yet?

I'll give it a bump too. I enjoy talking with all of you, it'd be a shame if this thread died, so a few things to ponder, in no particular order:
1) Am I the only one who has noticed the title of this thread is actually Swords, Shields, & and a Crossbow? That is, two "ands"? I was waiting for someone else to say something but no one ever did.
Yep, I didn't even notice, lol.
2) Orange has put up a chapter of a new fic http://archiveofouro...hapters/7680392 It's an AU where Cass and Varric have to hide out in a hotel room. It's called...wait for it...Suite Romance. Suite Romance, get it?
Perhaps it tickled my funny bone entirely too much.
Oh this one is wonderful! It's absurd and it's so funny to imagine the 2 of them going through toys and maybe taking a bath in a heart shaped bath tub
. I also wonder what went wrong that they have to hide? And: Are they going to drink champagne every day now?
Will there be smut on TV? In case they even have one, but if yes, then I am sure the appropriate movies should be there as well.
Dunno if it's okay to share, but... I finally drew an actual thing for these two (thanks to a blockmate for helping me with poses cause I suck at anatomy)...

Definitely! *batting eyelashes*
Orillia, I've read on your tumblr that you are working on something smutty, so I am curious what it will be

Varric's acting like a bit of a jerk in this one. Getting into bar fights and not properly appreciating Cassandra. Bad Varric!
(To paraphrase Dorian, "She's right there! What are you waiting for??")
Still, he's a handsome red-headed jerk with a nice chest.
Also, if any fanfic authors are reading this, finish your fics!! Post updates! We will give you love and hugs. It's like "The Gentleman" fic stopped updating, so everyone else threw down their metaphorical pens in despair. I don't know, but it's been slim pickings for a while.

Ok I seriously need to try this out, but I admit some hesitation. Modern(ish) AU's aren't my thing. They tend to take some of my favorite characters and make em completely human or strip them of whatever made them unique.

I think we need Cassandra to go to each of their homes and force them to write their fics ![]()

And as far as TMI banter about hair, Cass has the worst. Stick her in your party with Blackwall and Sera.

I wonder how cassandra would maintain a relationship with varic if she is divine, and stays divine.
i'd rather not think about that ;n; too much angst circles around my mind.
but on the other hand... he could travel from time to time to val royeaux... secretly meet with the divine in her quarters... mmm forbidden love tastes better xD (hey, someone could write that!)
but i prefer not to think about divine cass when she's romanced ;n; i always think of a happy ending for them both

I think Cassandra is devout enough that she would do what is expected of her on the matter, and would view doing otherwise as a shameful self-indulgence.

I'd have to agree with those who said Cass would leave Varric if she became divine. I don't think she ever seems to do things in half measures and call me a sucker, but I do love my happily ever afters.
What I would love to see is a Cass/Varric story that really delves into the whole Bianca fiasco. So far majority of stories haven't really dealt with it satisfactorily, at least for me. It's always sort of a footnote and brushed aside. Varric has been hanging onto this (married) woman for 10 years and lapping up any scraps she throws his way. I just don't see his leaving Bianca as easy for him.

I think that would be an awesome story, but I suspect the reason you haven't seen anything like that is because it would be super difficult to do well. It would take a lot of emotional nuance. Even the Tethraghast authors I enjoy reading don't have a deft enough touch or enough...life experience, maybe? to make it work. And just for the record, I'm not trying to insult anyone, I could not do it myself.I'd have to agree with those who said Cass would leave Varric if she became divine. I don't think she ever seems to do things in half measures and call me a sucker, but I do love my happily ever afters.

And, I'm not sure the juice would be worth the squeeze, either, from a fanfiction perspective. Most people want to read fluff, with entertaining, easily overcome problems. Not stuff where the hero is secretly in love with another (married) woman. There's an ick factor there that most people would want to shy away from.
I think the easiest way to examine the Varric/Bianca relationship and have him work through it would be to remove Varric and Cassandra completely from their old lives. Like, say Varric and Cassandra were actually the ones left in the Fade? (They both go to save Hawke, and succeed, but both get left behind.)
I think only by having no hope of actually seeing Bianca again could Varric look at his relationship with her with anything like a reasoned eye.
If you tried to do it without removing him from his life...that would be tough. I'd definitely read it, though, and give copious kudos to anyone who pulled it off.

Without a doubt. It's why I hope someone, somewhere, someday does this story. Personally I want an emotional roller coaster on this one. I love fluff, but there are days I just want tears streaming down my face and me yelling at the computer screen
But yea it would be a toughie.
Edit: O.k. Orillia, I just read your Suite Romance and Dragon Age Noir. I am loving them both. So glad I got over my modern AU prejudice. You kept all the things I love about the characters and just changed the setting. Plus I laughed out loud a lot. I wonder how cassandra would maintain a relationship with varic if she is divine, and stays divine.
In my very personal headcanon I'd like to think that she changes Chantry law and marries him (because being together without marriage would be just too much). What a great way to start reforming
. Or just elope with Varric. Or behave like popes have throughout the centuries? Naw, she would be not the kind of person to treat Varric like that.
Well yeah... Thedas reality would be different
. Cassandra is so dutiful, she probably would do what's expected by the Chantry.

Hm, I'm not so sure about this. I think he would just be fed up with it rather sooner than later. Or meet somebody else (-> Cass
). Or finally being together with Bianca, just to find out after a few months that the "relationship" did only work because they were _not_ together. You know. Oh well, would be a great story to read about but only if there is a happy ending for Tethraghast
.
Hunter, I agree with you on the difficulty to write something like that!

Hunter, dear don't give up on the thread so easily! Though I've noticed things slowing down a bit in the fic department as well, which makes me nervous.
I don't think it's canon that Cassandra gives up on her romance with the Inquisitor if she's Divine? It is something I can see her doing, since the role would require a great deal of commitment. But for someone who so desperately wants to have a beautiful romance, I don't know that she'd let it go to be Divine? I can see her trying to do both.
Wistful81- Oh good lord thank you *blushes* I am happy to have made you laugh!

It's not canon she gives up the romance, but it's not "not canon" either. I think it's more they haven't answered the question, but from what I've seen its heavily implied,
I don't know. Everyone is free to have their own impressions, of course, but I just don't see her reforming that aspect of being the Divine. Everything else she wants to reform, it's because she thinks it's morally wrong, not for her own convenience. I don't know what the "morally wrong" reason would be for overturning the divine's chastity.
Of course, this stuff all probably makes a lot more sense to me, coming from a Catholic background, which is basically what the Chantry is based on, so your mileage may vary.
I've noticed the fic stuff slowing down too (though I guess I'm part of that trend, so I can hardly complain...)
