Urrgh the Great gatsby..hated that book, and I still do.
I didn't read the whole thing. lol hated the writing style and couldn't get through it.
I did (mostly) pay attention in class when we covered it. And I recently saw the Dicaprio movie, so... yeah. lol
I remembered enough about the book to know for years that I hated Daisy so very much. Gatsby was a genuinely good guy, hung up on a woman who, at best, was hot and cold to him. Like, yeah yeah she had a jerk husband and she was maybe forced to marry him b/c of circumstances. But her vacillation just irks me. Like Gatsy has a viable way out for you. Have some conviction one way or the other, already!
Bianca isn't quite that kind of character. I don't think. As far as we've seen, she isn't technically leading Varric on. But she's apparently not gonna leave this Davri guy for him either.
Varric (and Bertrand) have built Clan Tethras into a very rich and powerful clan. I mean, Varric has his own spy network. (And half a beat plantation in Rivain!) He has Bianca the crossbow. He's an influential member of the Inquisition, best friends with the Champion of Kirkwall in practically all possible world(state)s, friends with Guard Captain Aveline and Admiral Isabela (hey shut up, those count as important.
), has a carta head for an editor, and is a famous author, and thus he has a legion of fangirls at his disposal.
He really can't handle the repercussions of the Davri family if Bianca broke it off?
And so what if they send assassins or something. He's Varric. He, along with all of aforementioned friends and resources if need be, can take down assassins. He has before.
If Bianca left her marraige, would it be a walk in the park? No. But it would be doable. The reason it hasn't happened is b/c of Bianca not going through with it. The reason they aren't together is a "won't", not a "can't".
All of that said, I am not saying Bianca *should* leave her husband. If her husband was an abusive a-hole, I'd be all for her getting away from him. But we don't even get an indication he's unpleasant. And I think Varric would indicate that at some point if he was. Or Bianca would, considering how abrasive her personality can be.
The situation seems to be that Bianca is cheating on her husband with Varric and is just fence sitting, refusing to break off either one or the other. And I think that just needs to stop, for Varric's sake, if nothing else. As long as this continues, he's just stuck. And as his friend a gamer who's grown extremely attached to him, I am just not ok with seeing him like this.
He needs to be able to move forward with his life. With Cassandra.
