Aside from what Hendrix said (really good post btw) I think the reason you're seeing a lot of resistance to this is that she was the main romance for straight guys in this game. She was far more popular than Josie (on these boards.) Entertaining the idea that her being with someone else should be cannon is like hearing someone saying that they'd like to take their romance away.

I was just laughing about someone mentioning Supernatural fanfic where Sam and Dean (brothers!) get it on. The kind of things people want to do or how they "ship" fictional characters is silly.. and not that big a deal in the big picture. You just have to laugh about it. If people really like her though, I suggest playing the romance bit in this game the way it was meant. With an Inquisitor. It's worth it.
From what I can tell, there's now Josie/Cass ships popping up a lot lately. /shrug

Yall people need Andraste, that's all I've got to say.
And a new pair of eyes. And ears. Maybe clear the caches on your mind. There is nothing there at all. A hypothetical here's about as useful as wondering what would happen if aliens invaded in spaceships. Just like this, it ain't happenin.
You have a better chance of that happening though than this. It wouldn't happen in a million years, and you'll need a million more to get Cass romantically involved with Varric. Sorry to burst the hell out of that bubble.
edit: Guess I had a little more to say after all, lol.
I'd say Varric/Cassandra is actually more believable than a Inquisitor/Cass relationship where the
Inquisitor constantly dumps on the Chantry and doesn't believe in the Maker. The devs just make it where you can still (artificially) drive the relationship forward by killing those blood mages/renegade Templars in her personal quest.

That's something to think about at least. They both tick her off, but that version of the Quizzy doesn't tick her off in the proportion she should be.

Not even. That's why you lose points with cass in those conversations anyway.
And even so, you can still do other things for her or to gain her respect despite this opinion, respect that she does not have for Varric.
There really is no stretching this. One can argue she's less likely to realistically be with those kinds of inquisitors, but the thing is, they at least have a stretch of belief, whereas Varric.... has none at all whatsoever.

Josie & Cassie huh? Interesting. Maybe my Qunari Inquisitor/Cassandra/Iron Bull threesome can become canon too lol. But seriously I don't think anyone is stating that Varric/Cassandra is a canon pairing we're just shipping it.I was just laughing about someone mentioning Supernatural fanfic where Sam and Dean (brothers!) get it on. Threesome? Do you even care what she wants?
Wait...that's your point, I guess.
And the point of most ships. No one actually cares what the characters want. It's about the people shipping instead. Same goes for people who want Cullen bi or Dorian straight.

I don't think it'd be taking anything away though. I'd love if more followers would develop relationships, it doesn't have to be romantic or so. Just it's so natural in a group, with 'sub'-relationships forming of various kinds.
Either way i loved the love/hate balance between the two.

No one actually cares what the characters want? If we're getting that up in arms about this, I assume you're including the writers (Gaider) in there, too. After all, you can romance Cass as an atheist who hates the Chantry and refuses to take her divine nomination seriously. But the devs included some magic sex coins, I mean, approval boosters, in the form of killing blood magicians, so wham! Cass loves you. It's so fake.
Compared to that travesty, having a head canon that Cass actually gets together with a nice guy is pretty normal in comparison.
And re: the bickering all the time, I got the impression at the end that they were doing it more out of habit than anything else. The banter definitely seemed friendlier toward the end of the game, as well as the fact that they seemed to have patched up their differences. Just my two cents, of course.

How am I just now finding this thread?? I have to admit, I like Cass/Varric. It's weird and probably cliche, and I have no expectations about it ever being canon (which is fine), but I like it. I really enjoyed how their relationship progressed from clearly not trusting each other at all, to grudging respect, to actual friendship underneath all the teasing. The way Varric talks about envying/admiring her decisiveness and willingness to take action, compared to his own indecision about things, and the way she talks about his 'virtuous heart' makes me think they could be a decent match for each other, personality-wise. They would challenge each other, and maybe soften each other's biggest weaknesses: Cass needs to know when to take a step back and breathe, to look before she leaps, and to forgive herself; and Varric can need help to go through with doing the right thing, even after he knows what that is. And Maker knows, Varric needs someone to help him move on from Bianca, because that doesn't seem to be going anywhere but loneliness and pain for either of them.
I think it would be tricky to work out for any length of time regardless of whether or not Cass is divine, because her priority is going to be either the Chantry or the Seekers and his loyalty stays with Kirkwall, but I won't lie, I ship it.
They are kind of tentatively an item in the fic I'm writing, which I may link if I ever finish it (it's eating my liiiiiife.)
To me they make a lot more sense than Fenris/Anders because I never really got a sense of much common ground underneath the fighting for Fenris/Anders, apart from 'we're both unhappy with our lives and have been oppressed.' Cass and Varric are much more similar in terms of their underlying values, so more likely to be compatible.
All just my opinion however! That's the beauty of art, it's open to multiple interpretations, even ones going against the artist's original intentions.

Well I guess there are some hardcore Varric/Cassie shippers that want the pairing canon. I don't see this pairing ever happening in game but that is what fanfics & fanart is for. The approval farming was absolutely ridiculous. I can be completely against everything a character stands for but go farm (insert random enemy name here) and they'll love me to death. Complete BS!
Agreed, I don't ever see the pairing happening as canon! I'm more responding to people who are saying it's ridiculous. It's no more ridiculous than a lot of stuff Bioware has done,

You guys who are coming in here and telling us that this isn't/shouldn't be canon are kinda making me laugh here. Please read the following:
Ok, so Varric Tethras and Cassandra Pentaghast.
I know I can't be the only one who likes this idea. Even DORIAN sees it! (@ 10:10)
[cue video]
Here's some fan stuff I found:
[cue fic and art links]
Who else has something? Art? Fanfic? Thoughts? Gushy fan glee over the idea of these two together? GUSH AWAY!
Where in that, or any subsequent post, do I ask that this be made canon? Especially at the expense of male inquisitors? No one is asking that "their romance be taken away". lol
I am just saying I ship this. I think they'd be good together. I want to talk to other people who think the same. We're not threatening anything by talking about a pairing that, even if the devs DID work it into the game, wouldn't have any bearing over a player romance anyway. Obviously, the player romancing Cass would render this a moot point. Like with Iron bull and Dorian. Or Mass Effect. In some people's games, Garrus and Tali have a thing going. And people ship them. I don't, but I don't consider the fact that they can get together under certain circumstances as a threat to my Shepard's happiness with Garrus. I mean, really. XD

We need to come up with a ship name, I think. I saw "Cassaric" on tumblr. Its a good enough mashup of their names, but it doesn't quite sing to me, you know? Of course I could be in the minority there. Anyone have any other ideas? It doesn't have to be a mashup of the name, could be something else.

Which are the Varric/Cassandra fanfics I found at the "archive of our own" site. Nah, shipping characters is nothing. It's not even canon, it's just for fun. Some characters do get into actual relationships when not romanced, and people who romance those characters are usually cool with it because it doesn't happen in their universe.

Okay, can I just... like go there and thank you lots for linking that? I forgot that AO3 actually existed until you linked the thing and gosh, glitteringworld's fics were so natural yet amazingly fluffy and amazing. I did spend an amount of time squealing.
I read most of the fics in that list except that explicit-rated fic. Not really my thing, but I did read the first part and the writing sounds pretty okay. So I guess it's safe to say that everything there's worth reading. ouo;;

I'd go and say "Varra" or "Vandra" or something like that but it sounds like 'bara' so no, I don't suggest that. I do suck at names for a reason. Cassaric sounds all great to me. =)
Being honest, "Swords, Shields and a Crossbow" sounds like a ship name as it is for some reason. Shields and bolts? Crossbow and shield? ;; It sounds like those ship names from RWBY that's all like "White Rose" and "Nuts and dolts" and all that.

The first chapter is pretty smutty (if you like that stuff, skip it if you don't-it's not essential) the rest are not. It's a work in progress though, so not complete.
