Wonderful, nullphysical! :)

Has anyone read vehlr's new fic "First of Her Name"? Sorry, can't link at the moment because I'm on my ipad. It's on AO3 and her tumblr. Chapter 3 was way too smooth for my taste, but chapter 4 fullfilled all my fluffy needs ;).

it's so good i have to express my feelings to vehlr every time i read a fresh chapter x3 (fandom writers need as much love as artists get)

I read it. I really like the premise--I don't know if monarchs in DA can name their own successors, but assuming they can, it would make a lot of sense to pick her.

Vehlr makes me crack up--she's always apologizing and saying she has a tendency to make her characters suffer, but meanwhile she writes the fluffiest, cutest, fanfic ever. (And I mean that in a good way.) :)

I'm also enjoying First of Her Name. One of my LEAST favourite things in fiction is the whole "prolonged misunderstanding that could be cleared up if they only talked to each other" trope, because it's so often badly done.

(Probably a little ridiculous that I seem to write that exact trope in EVERYTHING I do)

I really like how Cassandra just faces things head on in this fic, instead of dithering about. Not in character for her.

No, no you don't. Seriously.

And vehlr's fic just finally concluded. Nice she updated it every day. Too fluffy and cute for words. In the background, I'm like, "No way would the Nevarrans consent to having Cassandra as their queen. All the other heirs would conspire against her. And no way would they be ok with a dwarf marrying Cassandra." And then I made my inner voice shut up, because I liked the idea of things working out smoothly and happily ever after. :)

Thanks for the link, morie! :)

antivanruffles is also working on an AU with Cassandra as queen but totally different than vehlr's fic. For some reason, it won't always show up when I search on tumblr, though, so here are the links to Royal Pains:

Ch 1

Ch 2

Ch 3

I have to go and check what has been linked here before because there have been a few updates by hunter and OrilliaOrange and I don't want to double post the links :).

Oh man I am a sucker for a good modern AU and how did I not know this was a thing until now? Royal Pains is killing me.

For some reason when I try to imagine Cassandra in a modern AU as some kind of sports star I get this persistent picture in my head of Monica Seles. They don't even look much alike so it's weird.

On topic though, thanks good girl for scouring tumblr for us. :).

You needn't worry about me posting links to anyone's fanfic (or my own, either). I don't do that anymore unless there's a great fanfic I think everyone should read ASAP. I figure everyone knows where AO3 is, and nobody really wants to discuss anymore, so... ::shrug::

The relative dearth of interest has benefitted me though, personally. I'm writing a lot more what I want to write and a lot less what I think people want to read, if that makes sense. Since there's fewer people around, I'm more willing to go out on a limb and try something different.

Sometimes this fandom is so strange...

I know, right?

You have people spending thousands of dollars to design costumes so they can essentially play dress-up.

You have people whining about "game-breaking" things like short hair and tan PJs, when I remember fiddling with Flood Control Dam #3.

You have people who couldn't tell you when the Ottomans sacked Constantinople (or even who the Ottomans were) debating the relative merits of Andraste's March into Tevinter.

You have people who spend hundreds of hours writing terrible fanfiction about the relationships of video game characters that only their family and friends will ever read.

You have people with no discernible real world talents whatsoever who can beat nightmare mode in under 10 hours.

You have people--

--Wait....you were talking about me?

Yeah, I guess I'm strange too.

Seems I fit in perfectly. :)

Not really. It was more an observation on this thread and the community as a whole.

In all seriousness, I think the Varric/Cassandra thing is either something you see or something you don't, and if you don't, that's cool.

Though I haven't thought about flood control dam #3 in years...

We're really no stranger than any other shippers/fans. I think being a little strange might be a requirement of fandom, actually...

But yeah. Like a magic eye puzzle, either you see Cassandra/Varric, or you don't. Nor is it a big deal if you disagree.

(Also did anyone see that wicked "Inquisition Last Supper" painting someone did? Holy ****.)

Oh, but I will post this link to vehlr's fanfic http://vehlr.tumblr....rric-cass#notes

I will say this: some people are wailing and gnashing their teeth about this one ( though they might be over-exaggerating? Dunno.) I suppose I found it more melancholy than heart-rendingly sad myself but you've been warned.

I think it's supersad. But then again, I'm really bad at handling sorrow.

Spoiler

I have discovered this nice fic: http://archiveofouro...g/works/3956206

Hunter updated her fic A Butterfly Flapped It's Wing, but be warned, I consider it so well written but  at least as supersad as Vehlr's fic mentioned above.

Orillia added a new chapter to Strange Bedfellows. I see a lot of angst approaching!

And the fantastic Dragon Age Noir fic. I think Varric's POV is so well written in this story.

::shrugs:: Everyone gets sad at different things I suppose, and it's probably tied to our own personal hang-ups. Spirrum's fic about Varric dying made me bawl, probably because as an agnostic, the stuff about whether we'll see our loved ones on the other side really hit home. OTOH, vehlr's fic was angsty, but I couldn't help thinking that the crossbow bolt was probably stopping Cass from bleeding out, and by ripping it out, she probably precipitated her own death, and as an experienced warrior, she'd never do something like that. But I'm probably the only one who thought that, lol.

Yeah, you are right about it, people have different triggers. Actually, I don't even know why I even read the sad stuff. Honestly, I'm somebody who cries at some point during almost every movie, lol.

There have been a few updates on AO3, so I am just picking out a handful.

MayaAodhan wrote a short -sad- piece called The Letter. She is also the author of The Seeker and her Rouge, a story about Cassandra and Varric that I still enjoy re-reading. I think we have talked about it a few days ago.

Hunter/Saphir added a fic to her collection, and this one made me happy :) : I thought you were dead...

Spoiler

Here's a completed modern AU fic called You've got mail, a nice and light-hearted read.

And I'm happy to see that the author of A Big Deal About Not Very Much is still working on their story: Investigation: Skyhold

Spoiler

ETA: There's another angsty piece by Vehlr: What happend doesn't change anything. If you have somebody with Alzheimer's disease in your family, you might want to skip this one. Just to warn you. Even vehlr said she couldn't finish writing it.

Enjoy your day, everyone! :)

ETA2: Ok, that's more than a handful, lol.

I'm sure smarter people than I have looked into this, but I wouldn't be surprised if crying was hormonal/genetic. I'm not a huge crier myself, but when I was pregnant I became one of those people that cry AT EVERYTHING. I even cried over Disney movies and commercials.

Now, I'm back to the heartless shrew that I am, but while it was happening, I really had no control over it. So maybe crying is something that people are predisposed to or not, as the case may be?

Pointless personal anecdote aside, I read this article a few years ago on why people read sad things, and I thought the author had some thought-provoking ideas, so If you're interested: http://www.slate.com..._dying_son.html

It's weird that sadness and pain are essentially solo enterprises--and I find even in writing, I think, there's a limited capacity of words for describing pain, especially. It's sharp, or stabbing, or fiery, but how do you describe the agony that, when you experience it, makes you pray for death? I don't know that you can, really. There aren't the words. Or at least any I can find. There's many, many words for happiness, but not nearly as many for pain, and I wonder if that's because as humans, we essentially shy away from suffering.

And if you have suffered, you're expected not to talk about it. Just close it up, and move on. Your suffering is almost always your own.

I wish vehlr had finished her fic, though I understand why she didn't. It's so discomfiting because Varric's death is not entirely a sad event. Some sadness, perhaps at the situation itself, but also probably a relief that the burden was over, and the suffering done. And especially when it comes to caregivers, those are complicated emotions that are difficult to wrap your head around. Sadness, but relief, but following on its heels, even more sadness, because what kind of fucked up world do we live in where death can be a preferable alternative?

This is kind of rambling, and I'm sorry. If anyone has suffered through this downer of a post, go read some of the light-hearted fics above. You've Got Mail is long, and interesting, and sweet, and should do the trick.

Ok, who likes smut? (Don't bother denying it, I know you do.)

Who likes authors who update their stuff in a timely manner?

Who likes pregnancy/kid Fics? (Ok, I may be the only one raising my hand, but give it a chance. Totally awesome.)

Has anyone read the first chapter of calamity, by weatheredlaw? Varric makes flower crowns, and inadvertently starts a trend in Skyhold.

Yeah, it's lovely, isn't it? :)

Alright, I've got a few updates for you.

Orillia has a new chapter each for Dragon Age Noir, Strange Bedfellows and Suite Romance. DAN is still my favourite but the kissing scene in Suite Romance was so so good!

This one has taken a u-turn from light-hearted to dark. I enjoyed it so far, also the fact that it was updated so often and that it was mostly a feel-good story, but I'm not sure yet if I want to read on. Maybe in a couple of days when the story advanced further.

Now (actually, I've kinda thought about it since I've read hunter's 2nd chapter of A Butterfly Flapped it's Wing) which makes me think how Cass would handle such a loss? Not only

Spoiler
, but also Varric if they were together or Quizzy when they become friends. Would she find solace in her faith, would she let other people help her, would she go on suicide missions? I still haven't played enough of the game to really have an opinion on it. Seeing how guarded she was at the beginning of DA:I when it comes to Anthony's death, I fear that the grief would just swallow her. But then again, she is much much older and might have learned/experienced that not only faith but also friends/family help to heal. Will she want to heal? What do you think?

ETA: Sorry guys, I just realized that this is probably not the right place for this topic. Just ignore it.

Yeah, it was cute. It's just the second chapter that threw me for a loop. I was expecting more Varric/Cass fluff, and instead....a Leliana/Cullen/Josephine threesome relationship. :P

Yes, it actually contains my least favorite trope in fiction:

Nah, I won't ignore it. :P. I think it probably depends who dies, and under what circumstances? Probably not the most helpful answer, but I could see her doing any of the things you suggested.
