Just in further support of your theory: In the alpha footage that was cut from the game, Cassandra is the one to come up to Varric and put a hand on his shoulder after the townspeople get killed at Crestwood. Additionally, I believe that if Hawke is left behind in the Fade, and Varric stalks away to mourn, Cassandra tries to go after him, only to be waved off (this is from memory, so don't crucify me if it's not 100% accurate.)This ship definitely throws a lot more subtext into the whole Cassandra curiously asking about his pseudo-relationship with Bianca, his retort by asking about her own love affairs and her later admission to Varric that the only man she's ever been with was Regalyan. Consider that she only ever mentions him to a romanced Inquisitor... yeah, Varric seems to be the only person besides the Inquisitor that she's really willing to open up to and show the person behind the whole "Xena: Warrior Princess" front that she puts up in public.
Actually, a lot of her dialogue with Varric seems to her trying - in her own fumbling, adorable way - to apologise for how she acted during their intitial meeting, while trying to make extend an olive branch and offer of friendship towards him. Unfortunately, Varric either misinterprets these attempts or is too busy ripping into her for her interrogating and kidnapping him, to really seem to notice that she is making an effort to be nice to him.
I also wonder if there was any other cut content that would've further developed their relationship. If you listen to Raison's interview where she talks about playing Cassandra, she says something along the lines that (paraphrasing) "Cassandra is quite unexpectedly good at comforting people". Since she doesn't do this in-game, at least that I saw, I'm wondering if there was some VA work done for a Varric/Cassandra scene that was eventually dropped (I'm not sure who else Cassandra would be comforting.)
(FWIW, Raison's interview, albeit short, really blew me away. I was really surprised by how intelligent and articulate she was, as well as by the amount of thought she obviously put into "getting" her character.)
