Why did Leliana have to be in DAI?

"Oh, killed Leliana in DAO? Well, now you don't get to have the most liberal Divine. Choose between Cassandra and Vivienne."
That'd be the sort of consequences that are realistic and important.
No, instead of that, they retconned the decision for largely no other reason (that I can see) but to avoid extra work.
I just wish the decision to retcon wasn't made unless the writers/devs absolutely had to...which, in this case, they didn't. It just really undermines your previous choices and makes you question your choices going forward. Will Bioware respect them, or will they just get changed when/if they prove inconvenient?

No, that would be pretty stupid.
A decision for which the consequences are unknown is an uninformed decision.

Yeah, good thing I know all the consequences of my decisions before I make them in real life. Imagine having to make decisions not knowing what's going to happen in the future!

IKR? That time I closed the rift in my bathroom, and I had no idea it would make the toilet back up. That was AWESOME.

There's a huge difference in real life choices and video game choices. A choice like killing a companion in a game, shouldn't prevent you from having a pro-mage freedom divine two whole games later. Mind you, I think they could have replaced Lelianna with another pro-mage freedom spymaster just as easily though, but still-being punished for choices you made 2 games ago is a poor game design choice.
Major consequences should be limited per game, and the carry overs should have limited effect on future games. Which is what they are doing for the most part, and it seems to be working fairly well.

If you think you killed her you simply thought wrong and it is YOU who is trying to bend the laws of logic and physics.
Leliana is a hot lesbian-
Hot lesbians don't die they just retire from porn.

Because she is...
Spoiler...of 'Dragon Age' franchise!
I was just about to say that! Seriously it is true.

I hear ya, OP. Here's a thing that, while benefiting to me, was too much a burden for other players I wish it wasn't so.
I had hardened Leliana in DAO to protect her, making her kill Majorline. Thus, it made a lot of sense she would end up a spymaster.
You guys mentioned the character from Mass Effect, but IIRC she was never in a situation where she could die. She was busy delivering exposition from her little room or big office or her secret place. Not so with Leliana. I assumed another NPC would take over for her if she had died, I felt it cheapened the game for a lot of players.
For those that had Leliana killed off in DAO, did she explain that the Ashes somehow revived her? Or is that headcanon from the community?

They wanted to do something with her character. A lot of people are rather fond of her character, so it makes sense to do so. They made the mistake of allowing her to be killed in DA:O. They decided to work around it rather than take the time and effort to make a whole new character for the role they wanted her to have.
Pretty simple.
It's why I'm glad they let us off so few companions in Inquisition, so they can use characters as they please in the future without people screaming about it, rather than have them delegated to short cameos for the rest of time because determinant.

Well, I would have missed out on the ongoing saga of Schmooples and, apparently, his descendants (including Schmooples II) - so frankly, I'm happy that Leliana was back. And no, I didn't romance her either (my Warden married King Alistair, woohoo!).

You realize she's been on this path since Origins, right? This isn't out of the blue. Yeah, maybe you killed her, but you aren't all that.
The magic of the temple was strong enough to resurrect her. And seriously, people, get over it. We resurect each other on the battlefield constantly and have done since Origins. Not that big a deal. Also not sure why people would think it was a retconn or oversight rather than a plot point.
Zombie Chow, it's canon. She talks about the warden defiling the ashes and killing her. She later woke up healed without knowing exactly how. She assumes it was the ashes, but we don't know what healed her exactly. She doesn't like talking about it for obvious reasons, lol.

it was an asspull, there's no getting around that
and to be honest it was kind of pointless, I see nothing about her role in DA:I that was so unique to her that she needed to be brought back

Poor Zevran, forever the odd one out of the 'big three' eh.
Was Leliana for life, but I remember you, buddy. /neverforget

You can say that about any role. Bioware wanted to use Leliana and that's what happened.

Untrue. Of those three you mentioned, you can 'kill' all of them but only one (Alistair) actually remains dead. In fact, Leliana can die under two different circumstances in Origins but still remain alive in DAI.

Leliana has more reason to be in DAI than many people's Inquisitors. How could they possibly resist their most standout Chantry character so far, besides Cass? They don't.

Too many variables for Zevran to have a main role unfortunately, more than one opportunity to kill him, no reason for him to be away from a romanced Warden for any significant length of time, and from a meta perspective his VA was voicing the protagonist which could have made interaction somewhat weird. Still a shame though admittedly. Me? I want to see Shale again. Shale was epic.

it was interesting to see how she's changed since DA:O, and I liked talking with her in DA:I, seeing how she is fighting with her faith crisis

For the same reason most characters return in sequels; they're popular/well-liked.
I'm glad she returned, regardless. One of my favorite characters in the game (across companions and NPCs).

People like her, BioWare wanted to do more with her.
I'm glad we got more of her. I liked the various ways she could develop, and I thought her crisis of faith was very well written. And her romance references were really sweet, happy they threw those in there. ![]()
