Leliana unhardened doesn't use her experience as aspy or anything, she literally talks away the Circles
I'm sure some singing was involved.

Leliana's main skillset was inspiration in DAO. Song of Courage. Song of Valor. Capitvating Song. One of the bard skills was about confusing foes as well.
Which is how I see her "talking" things down, unhardened. She wins them over by charm and inspiration.... and the occasional trolling.
it was an asspull, there's no getting around that
and to be honest it was kind of pointless, I see nothing about her role in DA:I that was so unique to her that she needed to be brought back
I just plain disagree. If you think they don't have the major plotline of the series planned out in advance, I think you'd be wrong. You don't seat of the pants the plot of a series any more than you do a series of books. That would be completely amateur and these aren't amateurs
Nothing says writer's pet like being used for tissue harvesting if the bad guy wins.
You mean that same scenario where she snaps dude's necks with her legs after all that torture when looking like a grandma, and where none of that even happened because it was meant to be temporary and served just to make her look superkewlbadass?
Yep.
Have to admit i was glad to see Leliana back , always liked her character , her DAO version more so than the Inquisition one however.
Why? Because everybody...well nearly everybody loves her, and Bioware knows that.
There's a huge difference in real life choices and video game choices. A choice like killing a companion in a game, shouldn't prevent you from having a pro-mage freedom divine two whole games later. Mind you, I think they could have replaced Lelianna with another pro-mage freedom spymaster just as easily though, but still-being punished for choices you made 2 games ago is a poor game design choice.
Major consequences should be limited per game, and the carry overs should have limited effect on future games. Which is what they are doing for the most part, and it seems to be working fairly well.
I disagree, I actually liked that if you killed Wrex in ME1 you get Wreav in ME3 who is the total opposite of Wrex. With the choice to kill Wrex, you end up with an iffy Krogan leader. If you choose to destroy the Genophage research in ME2 the future gets even more bleak for the Krogan but you still have the option to cure them or not with different results. I wouldn't have minded that for DA.

Poor Zevran, forever the odd one out of the 'big three' eh.
Was Leliana for life, but I remember you, buddy. /neverforget
I'm glad they brought Leliana back. And that's coming from somebody who never particularly liked her.
I really like her character in DAI even though she's pretty creepy. But it's only now that I really get the tragedy of her character since I mostly ignored her in DAO and didn't remember much about her other than that her religiousness annoyed me greatly. Then she started talking about shoes and that's when I completely lost interest in her.
Leliana is like Ashley from Mass Effect to me. I disliked them both for being religious. Ash had her poetry I couldn't relate to. Leliana had her shoes and her singing. Back then I rejected anything that had to do with religion. I hated the chantry. Now Cassandra is my favorite character and I approve of rebuilding the chantry. I quite like Ash since ME3. I recently replayed ME1 and I think Ash is pretty cool actually. Funny how things change sometimes, I guess I grew up...
It was not necessary to bring Leliana back, but now her character has so much more depth. DAI continues her character theme very nicely. It's shocking to see Leliana so changed. She's in a very dark place in Inquisition and it's absolutely horrifying to see her slip further and further into darkness. I didn't know how to stop it, I messed up one of the triggers I only read about after finishing the game. She's quite the tragic character who's been abused all her life by the people she trusted and looked up to. It was shocking for me to find out that Justinia, the person Leliana admired so much, used her like everyone else. And it's absolutely heart-breaking to see Leliana misunderstand what Justinia wanted to tell her at the end. It's the final nail in her coffin, what makes her go completely dark and ruthless. In fact, YOU as the inquisitor fail her too if you can't make her understand what Justinia meant. You become yet another leader who fails her and nurtures her delusion.
All her life Leliana thought she was too soft, that she needed to be tough and cold to be worth something. Her true self is very emotional and kind. And unbiased. She had a sunny disposition once, you still see some of that in her interactions with Josephine. Soft Leliana is very affectionate and playful with her friends. But what happened to her changed her completely.
DAI is a wonderful continuation of her character that, depending on your actions, takes a soul-crushing turn for the worst that is absolutely true to her personality and history. It's debatable whether making soft Leliana divine is a great conclusion to her character arc. It's certainly one rewarding way to look at it. I'm so glad Bioware gave me the chance to finally appreciate Leliana's character.
Now I only wish they would give Alistair some relevance. Of the three important DAO companions, he's the only one who doesn't matter anymore at all.
