Hi guys,

I don't know exactly how to best put this question but I'll give it a shot. I'm stuck on dragons. I tried the Hinterlands and the Crestwood dragons and got thrashed. My Inquisitor is a level 12 two handed warrior. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks :)

What difficulty are you playing on, and who do you have in your party?

I'm playing on normal. Blackwall , Solas and Varric are in my party. I think for the Hinterlands dragon part of the problem is that I speced Solas in storm instead of winter.

I've never fought the one in Crestwood, so I can't really offer any advice for her. The Hinterlands dragon is annoying regardless since she can only be targeted by ranged party members at certain times during the fight, and because she summons dragonlings. What's causing the most trouble for you, the breath weapons, the physical attacks, or the dragonlings?

you can re-spec your characters using the tactician's renewal for around 300 gold i think, from the blacksmith

what about your equipments?  and you might want to level up a bit for extra skills

the hinterlands dragon (fereldan frostback, fire dragon) is always at lvl 12, and yes it is annoying, better to spec varric with long shot and full draw (if possible) for long range

the crestwood one (northern hunter, lightning dragon) is at lvl 13, not as much annoying as the frostback, and if im not mistaken it is weak to spirit attacks

I think its a bit of everything. The drangonlings are a nuisance but not the main problem. The main problem is getting in close and the breath weapons.

@Zoe, I'll try respecting solas and doing all the things you suggested.

UPDATE:  I just managed to get the Fereldan Frostback's health down about 1/4 + . Still wiped though :(

Is the whirlwind thing what's ultimately doing you in? That does quite a bit of damage. Easiest way to deal with that is switch to tac cam when she starts to use it and move your party members adjacent to her. They won't take any damage from the attack, and you can move them back out of harm's way once she's done.

It also helps to keep your ranged characters closer to the dragon, but not so close that she can hit you with melee attacks. If your ranged characters are too far away when the whirlwind starts you won't get inside in time and take damage.

Oh and when the dragon lands on one of the ledges position your party under said ledge and she can't spit fire on you.

Super update: Thanks for all of your advice. I actually managed to bring the Frostback down. Know I'm working on the Crestwood dragon. I managed to bring the Hinterlands dragon down by having my inquisitor ,Blackwall and Vivienne attack the legs while Solas kept the barrier up. When she went up to the cliff to spit fire I hid directly under it.

Now back to the northern hunter :)

For attacking it with a mage, don't worry about which element you have points in. Lightning bolt, winter's grasp, etc are very inefficient to use against a dragon since it is immune to their CC and they do relatively low damage against only a single target for how much they cost. Instead just make sure to equip a staff of whatever the dragon is weak to (or doesn't resist) and get upgraded energy barrage (despite being in the Storm tree its damage counts as whatever element your staff is). Low cost, high single-target damage (about 800% iirc which makes something like winter's grasp potatoes by comparison). By far the most efficient damage spell for wearing down bosses.

Hinterlands dragon is probably one of the harder ones, smooth sailing now that you have that one done. Just have to pay attention to the shock dragons ring debuff, which forces you to either dispel it or spread your characters out to avoid shocking each other.

I never really figured out what that does....

My 14th level Rift Mage had a pretty easy time with the Hinterlands dragon with Blackwall, Iron Bull and Viv. Viv and I had ice staffs and Viv was specced out with Spirit, Winter, and KE. Blackwall would tank and Bull just did whatever damage he could. No real issues except keeping Barrier up on Bull.
