Locked inside the house, like any responsible parent should do when there are demons left and right.

You only see one kid in the entirety of the Mass Effect Trilogy to, but we know they exist, same difference with Dragon Age, just because they aren't front and center doesn't mean they don't exist. They didn't want to spend time and resources on more background npcs, thats fine we have enough as is.

I was thankful I didn't have to listen to the usually bad child voices, personally.
Except for Kieran, who (no offense to the kid) kinda sounded like he was eating his recording device while speaking. Hm.
I heard a rumor he was voiced by Claudia Black's actual son. Of course, this came from one youtube comment so.... I'm not sure. But going on the DA Wiki I see his name is "Odin Black". Good enough for me, and I think its awesome she got to bring her real son to voice her son.

they're all dead. The first victims of the Breach.
Except Kieran, who was hidden at the Crossroads.
It is the duty of the Inquisition to repopulate the world.

Honestly, we should be thankful. Remember what happened when they included one(!) kid in Mass Effect 3?

Good point. But at least we can shoot him.

In DA2 people complained that the "children" were just slightly shrunken adults so instead of improving children in DA:I they took them out completely. Just pray we don't end up with a "starchild" as compensation.

They've exchanged places with female dwarves, since they had to sit it out in DA2.
Not convinced? Then, behold: money and time.
They would say that it would take more effort to make the models for children of different kinds, give them voices to sound more authentic, and whatever else they would say. Not excusing it, but I imagine it is always something like this.
Probably came down to a decision like this: children, or mounts?

If this was the case I demand that I should be able to jump on Kieran's back and force him to carry me into battle.

Adding some children to populated areas (not in the middle of the wilderness of course), adds realism to the game. I am talking about seeing children in small towns, settlements, villages like Redcliffe etc...
There is a war going on, sure, and through-out our entire history (for example) children have been around it; families evacuating on the road while battles were fought just off in the distance and so on.
My point is, the absence of children in the game makes me think that Thedas has no children and people somehow just come into existence in some shape or form lol, maybe through magic!
Look at Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas, the Wasteland is a hellhole, and yet you see children around, in ruined areas like Freeside, where there is a brothel with whores and junkies just around the corner, called the Atomic Wrangler.
To me, the addition of some children in the game basically adds realism to the game and that's the whole point.
Doesn't matter if anyone thinks that children should not be in war-torn villages or settlements because they are children and should have no place there. The fact is that such things are real, families are caught in wars, and children happen to be right in the midst of it.
And that is the sort of realism that makes a game more alive.

One could also argue: Why have small animals run around in the wilderness, if not for the reason to add realism to the environment. After all, would it not make sense to see rabbits, deers, wolves, Ravens and Crows be abound in a wilderness as you explore?
It's called populating the area, and just like that example, it would make sense to see actual families with kids in villages or towns.

I would think it was awesomer if the kid didn't sound like a twerp who was struggling to read/remember his lines, let alone emote them.
(And yes, this is harsh, but fwiw, I am a parent too. I try to keep in mind that just because I think my kids are the greatest thing since sliced bread does NOT mean this is the reality. I don't blame Ms. Black or the kid, I blame the VA director who apparently green-lighted this.)

I get what you're saying, but realism has to stop somewhere. I mean, "realism" could also be getting all your LIs pregnant in an era of iffy birth control. "Realism" could be NEVER being able to win the approval of the Orlesian court because you're a Qunari. "Realism" could be your companions randomly dying because their head got hacked clean off their body, and no revive or healing potion could help that.
Let's face it, "realism" has to stop somewhere. I guess the lack of kids bothers some, but I'm willing to suspend my disbelief in a game that has a bunch of other things that aren't realistic either.

Would you really force your children to trek all the way to Skyhold? Knowing how perilous it was to get there?
Because leaving them to die as an avalanche covers Haven makes so much more sense.

not talking about the people from Haven, as was made clear people are coming from ALL OVER to skyhold. If it was just the people from Haven they'd all have arrived when you did.

Damn...that's grim and depressing...reminds me a little of that one playground in Primm (Fallout New Vegas), a random teddy bear sitting ontop a childrens slide, as if it's been sitting there for 200 years since the Nuclear Holocaust, waiting for the child that owned it to pick it up and take it back home. ![]()

I think he did alright, he was far better than some of the child actors I've seen over the years in various media. Plus it's lack of experience and whatnot, I mean, look at the performances in the Harry Potter movies and tell me that most of those kids didn't suck until at least the third movie?

Lack of children did not start with DAI. In DA2, apart from those we specifically encounter as part of a quest, there are very few children on view. This was particularly noticeable with the Dalish clan. In DAO we were able to join the storyteller to help instruct a group of children, yet by DA2 there was no sign of them. Either they died along with the Halla or the clan must have split in two, leaving the children behind in Ferelden. Likewise there were children in the alienage in DAO but no sign of any in DA2. I think the truth is that with all the other demands of the people doing the graphics, having an additional child generator just didn't seem high priority. Just assume they are there but in this world children are both not seen and not heard.

Them children were evacuated to Skyrim so that they cannot be harmed no longer.
Seriously, there should be no children in such a game as DAI, and it is a game after all. So, BW made their choice. I fully approve.
There were enough children hurt in DAO and Awakening. That is enough. And enough is enough.

Not having to listen to annoying kids with bad voices sounds good to me.
