Why couldn't I choose Leliana or support her for Divine?

I felt that Leliana was a better choice than Cassandra. At one point, I have the option to do a war table mission to support Cassandra, but there was a warning that I wouldn't be able to support anyone else if I did the mission, so I skipped it. Leliana finally asked me what I thought about her becoming the next Divine and I told her I supported her. Yet, at the end, it was Cassandra that became Divine.

Was there supposed to be a war table mission for Leliana too? Because there was one for Cassandra?

Does it have to do with how you react to Leliana? I pushed her to kill Nathalie and that other person.

Thanks!

I did the same choices and never got a war table mission to support anyone as divine, but by the end Liliana was indeed Divine. When Cassandra asked, did you say that you would support her as divine?

Yeah, I did tell Cassandra that she'd make a good Divine. But I also said the same thing to Leliana, so I don't understand why Cassandra was chosen as Divine.

What choices did you make. If your choices support Cassandra and that fact that you supported Cass as divine in dialogue made certain that she was divine. If you really wanted Leliana, why did you support Cass?

What really sucks is you can't romance Cassandra if you don't support her for divine. WHat does that have to do with romance?  She also was interested in leading the seekers, so you should be able to romance her and support her for leading seekers, etc.  So with the very few options for romance with Casandra, if you don't do that one, you never have a chance again.  But don't worry, every time you open a dialogue, no matter how many times you turn Dorian down, he's still hard for you and bioware wants you to be aware you can always get in his pants.

It's not as simple as who you tell you support. A lot of different things factor into it throughout the game eg. if you use Leiliana in a lot of war missions, she gains more power, etc.

I supported no-one, and Leliana became the divine.

How to support Leliana as Divine:

Ally the Mages, Support Briala at Winter Palace, generally make dialogue choices which state the current system is not working and needs to be radical change and that mages deserve their freedom, support Leliana directly when talking to her, do the war table mission if it comes up.

How to support Cassandra as Divine:

Ally with the Templars, Support Gaspard at the Winter Palace, generally talk about how Circles are needed but with reform to make them better, mages need oversight but not to the extent it was before, support Cassandra directly when talking to her, do her war table mission.

How to support Vivienne as Divine:

Conscript Mages (maybe also Templars), Support Celene at the Winter Palace, generally talk about how the Circles and the Chantry are good, mages are bad and need oversight, but there should be mages within the Chantry, support Vivienne directly when talking to her and generally agree with her stance about mages, do her war table mission if it come up.

There may be other choices involved, but they are generally unknown.

You dont need to support her to romance her, I supported Vivienne and romanced Cassandra

So I don't know if its a fluke, but my female elven mage could support both Cassandra and Leliana for Divine.  However, I could support Cassandra MUCH earlier, and the option for Leliana didn't present itself until after the Temple of Mythal (by which point I had already supported Cassandra at the war table, so I discouraged Leliana).  I supported the Mages, was generally supportive of the Chantry, Celene and Briala reconcile, Gaspard exiled, and completed Cassandra's personal mission rather quickly.

Players trying to make all companions happy instead of actually using their heads.

That IS using their heads. The fact that a companion could hate you, missing out on their dialogue scenes and many interesting missions because of literally one opinion you two don't share, are signs that the devs aren't using their heads.

To get leliana to be divine two things push the game way towards her. Freeing the mages, NOT conscripting them, and supporting Briala in the great game. I don't know how having all three work together or how Briala + Clene  work though.

You don't need to go that far (you do need to ally with the mages/conscript the templars to push it toward her) but generally you need to be big on "the chantry is broken" dialogue options.

Well, I supported Gaspard so maybe that explains it, though I generally tended to be anti-chantry.

Can anyone tell me what the state of the chantry is if Cassandra or Vivienne becomes divine?

SPOILERS BELOW

Leliana became the divine for me.   It caused the chantry to break part and a college of enchanters to form and govern the mages.

I had the option to tell all three candidates they had my support and each one had a "throw support behind this character" war table mission.  The person I chose became Divine.

Yazsh, Cassandra introduces reforms; both the Circle and College of Enchanters are created.  Apparently Vivienne puts everything back exactly as it was.

Everyone should do the "let's talk about Cassandra and Leliana as candidates" conversation with Vivienne at least once.  She's trying so hard to manipulate you, and my Dalish Inquisitor was very politely smiling and taking absolutely none of the hints to ask "Why, Vivienne, darling, who do YOU think would be best?"

It.

Was.

Glorious.

That...really depends on what your character's goals are for the Chantry and Thedas.  Of the three, I found Cassandra's vision and faith the most compelling and realistic.  If I play a character who wants the Chantry to crash and burn, I nominate Leliana.

Leliana's retarded descent into a psycho war criminal was the straw that broke the inquisitor's back for me. Lost any desire to finish the game once it became clear that Sane Leliana had left the building and was no longer an option for Divine.

Wow! People who actually got to play the game they purchased! No bugs? Must not have been a pre-order for PC.

This is why I hope Bioware puts approval and disapproval ratings permanently in the background so players never see them.
