Why couldn't I choose Leliana or support her for Divine?

Wow! People who actually got to play the game they purchased! No bugs? Must not have been a pre-order for PC.

Preordered for PC via Origin, Dowloaded it as soon as I could preload the game, fired it up on Ultra across the board, got a couple of CTD before I found the fix that worked for me. (the Visual C++ update 4 2012.) once I figured it out and installed that, the game rocks, flies along nicely. (Okay yes I have a custom gaming rig that is way over powered for the game. 6 cor i7 4.0gHz, 16 GB RAM, dual Nvidia Titian GPUs, liquid cooled, the whole costly mess but, the game does run beautifully and, the only quests that have glitched are Hinterlands Mosaics and Quarry Quandary (because I judged the prisoner too early.)

As for who becomes Divine, I prefer Cassandra but, sometimes get a softened Liliana. I have never gotten Viv but, then my approval with her is always low.

Leliana's retarded descent into a psycho war criminal was the straw that broke the inquisitor's back for me. Lost any desire to finish the game once it became clear that Sane Leliana had left the building and was no longer an option for Divine.

I got the "I-love-everyone!"-Leliana. She only goes psycho through certain choices. I managed to soften her, because she scared the **** out of me with her dictator-speech.

It's your fault if she goes psycho. And for the record, a "good" Leliana is the single best choice for Divine if you want a good ending. Because she has a great ending with both the mages and Templars. Cassandra only has a good ending if you picked templars.

I pre-ordered for the PC and I played the game just fine. In fact I am running it on a Toshiba laptop.

I didn't want Leliana for divine, and she became divine and I don't know why. But now that I think it's pretty cool, if I go replay this game with the same inquisitor in mind, you just watch. Leliana won't be divine next time and I still won't know why and it will probably because I made a different dialogue choice somewhere that I won't remember.

I always chose viv for divine.. who better to speak on the dangers of magic than a mage that supports the circles. leliana is way to heavy handed in her ways.. which is fine I need her like that as my spy master..and Cas would be better put to reforming the seekers..I got dorian as my mage sense solas took off..Viv is the only person I trust with the job and remain loyal to me.

You know what this whole divine choice thing reminds me of. In Fallout New Vegas, when you do Arcade's companion mission, if what you tell him at the end conflicts with everything you said during the mission, he calls you out on it.

Maybe if they did that with the divine choice things would be a bit clearer for players. Have someone call the inquisitor out on their opinions and past choices when they conflict with who the inquisitor promotes for divine.

Hmmm. I played pretty much the same with my first two characters (full ally of mages, friendship with both Cassandra and Vivienne, both times told Vivienne the mages should be part of the Chantry. Did the Celene thing differently though, maybe that helped?). Got Cassandra the first time with my Dalish warrior, probably because I chose to support her on the board, and told Vivienne I supported Cassandra and didn't suggest she should be in the running. Didn't even get it to come up with Leliana because I was having that thing where she wouldn't show up to be talked to, so I didn't even do her personal quest that time. Maybe that prevented her getting it...? I also let Celene die and supported Briala.

Second time I had a human mage and decided to support Vivienne for the difference. Did do Leliana's quest this time. Ended up with Vivienne; I'd supported her on the board and told Leliana I didn't support her, and avoided talking about it with Cassandra at all. I saved Celene, exiled Gaspard and didn't reconcile her and Briala.

Third one I'm aiming for Leliana, but since I'm playing a templar-lovin' religious Andrastian to try to see the things I haven't yet, I imagine it will lean heavily toward Cassandra...

It's all your choices and not just with the companion in question. If you tell people you support the circles, you aren't going to get Leliana who opposes them. If you want leliana, tell anyone who will hear it that mages shoulld be free. If you want Cass, talk about reform. If you want Vivienne agree with her about supporting the circles without talking about reforming them. The templar mage choices may factor in. If you say opposite things, you're probably cancelling some of your choice opportunities.

First playthrough - Supported Mages, hardened Leilana, all three support Missions on War Room Table, (I told all of them that I would support them.)

Second P - Supported Mages, Softened Leilana, Only Cass and Viv's Support Missions on War Room Table, I told all of them again that I would support them, game choose Leilana as divine.

What speech was this? Not that I'm doubting you. Lelliana frequently scares the crap out of me, lol.

Murderpope Leliana is my canon. I don't think I'll ever do it differently -- she's just so homicidally divine.

I disagree that it's my fault. I think the justification the game uses for it (as I understand it, choosing not to butt in during a conversation which has nothing to do with you at the start of the game is enough to turn her psycho) is laughably flimsy. This is stacked against my siding with the mages, making them allies, repeatedly telling her not to execute unarmed prisoners (and being ignored), giving everyone second chances etc. etc.

I wouldn't mind her insane switch in personality so much if I -the Inquisitor, her superior- actually had the option to stop her or punish her. She's basically murdering and kidnapping innocents in front of me and my available responses amount to 'Oh well, nvm'.

My PC copy works fine. 2/10 for your attempt at steering the conversation off topic.

As for the OP, check the link in my signature for more information on how to get the candidate you want.

I did not finish my first playthrough yet, but I hope I did not mess up completely and still have the chance of getting Good Leliana as Divine.

I had no idea my actions would change the choice of Divine back then, but I did stop her from succumbing to a killing frenzy in all cutscenes, and she thanked me for showing her she should be merciful after her personal quest.

But I did take her offer on the way to take Blackwall back. Killing a traitor in his stead... Do you think this may have some influence?

Also, I did tell Cassandra once that she could be a good Divine. I was being honest, though I was under the impression that Leliana would provoke more profound changes in the Chantry, so I personally prefer her. Let's see what I get.
