Since we seem to have a bunch of hunter fans here, and I don't see them mentioned in any build guides at all... Do people not like elemental mines at all? I know the damage isn't fantastic, but death by christmas lights kind of amuses me a lot. Just promoted, so trying to decide if I want it again or try something else, maybe dip into poison stuff. Ones that are not up for debate: Stealth, leaping shot. Kinda like explosive shot but could be persuaded to ditch.

I'm not any kind of great at this game, so use case it routine at low levels, then threatening for the last half of the levels. Perilous isn't really interesting to me. Guessing, since the mines build worked ok, that the answer may be along the lines of "as long as you're not rolling with an Inquisition Longbow, do whatever you want".

I'm on board with everyone else who says take both.

I run stealth, explosive, leaping and toxic cloud (which seems to be getting more popular).

Explosive -> Toxic Cloud out of stealth for groups, Leap out of Stealth for big single targets, and remember with Long bow of the Griffon (which seems surprisingly common) the followup hit from Rolling Draw can do as much damage as leaping shot if you point blank a large target - 600%.

Leaping shot is my favorite bow attack in the game, especially on the hunter.

I run stealth, hook & tackle (upgraded), explosive shot, and leapingn shot (upgraded).

For me, leaping shot is a great combo of dps and evasion, plus it gets you out of any CC (similar to payback strike). Add rolling draw to the mix, and it's one of the best abilities in the game.

I'll either stealth in, or use hook and tackle to get up close (h&t prevents leaping shot from benig blocked) to a big target, nuke it with leaping shot. Then switch targets to an archer to use rolling draw to knock them off their feet.

Depending on the situation, If my stealth is up, I'll stealth, and then hit a target with explosive from stealth, which can set off a massive chain reaction that'll kill anything in range (I have a bow that causes targets to explode for 75% wep damage when I kill them).

I also enjoy the knockdown that comes with explosive shot.

So, I guess I like both explosive and leaping shot...but if I had to pick one, I'd definitely go with leaping shot. Just personal preference though.

Hmmm, interesting.  I have always thought hook and tackle for an archer was a poor skill but i might have to try that build.

The hunter can take advantage of it because he has a few skills and passives that have good synergy with it. You can follow H&T up with a toxic cloud or leaping shot or even an upgraded fallback plan if you really, really want to isolate a target (or maybe also throwing blades? i dunno, haven't used those either yet, so I don't know exactly how they work). Combined with his on the razors edge passive, you can do some pretty darn good damage. Plus, stealth and easy to miss really helps him be able to get and stay in close.

I haven't used H&T personally, but I can see that it could be pretty useful.

Same.  With Archer/Hunter in mind, I tend to play safely from a distance.  That said, H&T not bening blockable makes it looks more interesting. Might try next build: LS, ES, H&T, S.

When I first unlocked the hunter and saw H&T in the tree, I too questioned it's usefulness.

But after reading a couple guides (thanks Penguin and others!!), I decided to try out H&T. There's definitely no going back now lol.

I like to build my Archer and Hunter different, so they require different play styles.

I spec my Archer to be a lurker in the back. Nuking large targets from distance, and then clean up stragglers on the fringes of the battle field. I usually run a combo of three shots (change it up from one promo to the next) with Evade thrown in their for a little more maneuverability.

With the hunter, I go for some "Kick in the door, wavin the 4-4" close range action. "On the Razor's Edge" is a must have passive for this build. It's all about using H&T + stealth to get right up close to mobs....then shooting them in the flank or back lol.

Upgraded H&T is a must IMO (upgrade removed cooldown and stamina cost...its a free ride!). H&T can get you into trouble real fast...having zero cooldown can help you get out of trouble quickly too. The key is to learn how to quickly leap around, using enemies to move you around the battlefield. H&T also has a quick stun once you hit the target, so it can be used as CC in a pinch. I've also had situations where all my CDs are used, so I've literally spammed H&T on a mob until it died lol.

I'm not arguing this is the best way to hunter, but it's what I've foind to be the most fun (combo with archer style for way more variety).

I'll play the archer when I'm tired / lazy. Other than watch LoS on groups of archers, and being aware of where Rogues are, I find the archer very "easy-mode"...which is perfect when I want that.

When I'm more into it, I'll play the Hunter. I find it much more dynamic. You have to be much more alert and aware of your surroundings...especially of where archers are and if they're targeting you. They'll still hit you mid flight while using H&T, or even after you've stealthed. LoS is your friend.

Edit: forgot to add

What are people's thoughts on Cun vs Dex in Hunter and Archer builds?

My promos are quite low, as I only started a few weeks ago.

So with my archer, I've been gearing +Cun to get my Crit up, to take advantage or the stamina regen. Is there a certain level of Cun that one can reach where it pays off to start adding Dex for AP?

With regard to the Hunter. He has no passives that take advantage of crits (and he has an auto-Crit coming out of stealth), so would it make more sense to spec the Hunter for AP as opposed to a high Crit build?

I'd never really given Spike Trap a chance...

So I've just tried this out, running Stealth, Toxic Cloud, Spike Trap and Leaping Shot. (dropped explosive shot from my normal build)

I was in two minds; it can be really hard to trap a moving priority target, they get back up really quickly (I'm sure they stay down longer when knocked down by explosive shot), it's AoE is very small so it's hard to hit multiple targets, the most I ever hit without another player grouping them together somehow is 2.

And then a pug I was in fell apart at the DC and I basically soloed perilous 5/5 against demons with 3 in the fade, as a Hunter.

The ability to do damage, and life steal, from stealth is huge, which is why I love Toxic cloud. And Spike Trap kicks it up another level, letting you trigger explosive toxin on mobs that might survive the initial Toxic Cloud without leaving stealth. I'm a convert.
