A strange question yes. But I ask after having a debate with a friend about how say in game if you don't like a certain character you go out of your way to make that character's life a living hell. And my friend tells me that you wouldn't do that to a real person and I should treat fictional characters with respect on par with actual people. His argument is they are real people in their world thus should be afforded some respect. Is my friend delusional? Or is there something to this?

Depends on the author (god) of their world.

A right to not be included in horrible fanfiction by deranged fanboys/fangirls?

But more seriously, yes your friend is delusional. They're nothing but 1s and 0s.

I think that might qualify as a special brand of nuts.

If the characters in the game are sentient and you purchase the game do you own them however?

In a realistic manner.

No.

In a story manner, yes.

Is there a reason to be an ass to them?

Personally I don't see how you can get enjoyment out of torturing something with a set repatriate of reactions.

Depends on the game.

Sometimes they'll own you.

Rin's defenceless anus hasn't got any rights. It's there to contract with Shirou's shotgun.

Let the anus trend spread!

Your friend is a weird guy.

The characters in games aren't real.

Who cares what you do to them?

No. An example must be made to the others.

I consider them my property. They are just expensive virtual action figures to me. And if I abuse them there is no down side. I can just reload my save.

You're friend is delusional, and should probably get themselves checked out if they are serious.

A few lines of code is not a real person, and never will be.

I treat fictional characters just the way I'd treat normal people, For a variety of reasons. GTA and Watch_Dogs are the only two exceptions to that rule.

Coding languages could advance so much that you could be proven wrong.

Giving an absolute like "never" is silly.

It would be more accurate to state we cannot currently create a sentience with our current technology, in a few lines of code.

Expletive no, but I believe it can be a reflection on your character.

Whatever you say. Point is they are lines of code. A digital character is not a real person. That is a load of bullshit.
