In a realistic manner.
No.
In a story manner, yes.
Is there a reason to be an ass to them?
Personally I don't see how you can get enjoyment out of torturing something with a set repatriate of reactions.
I approve. However, In a game like GTA, You're invited to think outside the box, To use every possible resource to get to your goal. That's why i don't give a damn about how many people i ran over while driving in GTA. ![]()
They have copyrights.
Truth.
very good point.
The whole reason I play GTA is because I get to run a*sholes over
I don't think some people don't even give fictional characters rights in their sexual fantasies.
EDIT: I crossed out the double negative. What is wrong with me?
Are they sentient?
No. Technically they aren't even sentient within they're world.
Do they exist as Physical beings in our plain of 3rd dimensional space?
No.
Therefore the conclusion is no. They don't.
You're friend is delusional and illogical.
They have copyrights.
Truth.
This is also true.

Coding languages could advance so much that you could be proven wrong.
Giving an absolute like "never" is silly.
It would be more accurate to state we cannot currently create a sentience with our current technology, in a few lines of code.
This is an interesting thought. Mostly because of the question of, "if we manage to create humanity by running a program, should we create a language to do this?"
I could see it like a variation of SQL(like a domain 4 language but I do not think it would be turing complete).
This question reminds me of the turing test actually.

**** it lets dedicate the thread to Alan Turing.

Nothing is safe from fanfiction.
A few lines of code is not a real person, and never will be.
Haven't you seen Tron!? ![]()
wat
Check your physical world privilege.
No they don't have rights, cause THEY ARE NOT REAL PEOPLE
end of thread.
Some people get very attached to their pixels. There are people who can't handle having their sims die. But as others have said, they're just pixels and code and the players can treat them however they wish (or the game allows them to).

This is a brilliant remark, Jeremiah. ![]()
We are all nothing but a series of electrons transferring between atoms.
They are the same thing, but on a lesser scale.
Technically speaking they are lesser than us, but the same.
But what if we are living in a simulation and we are only fictional? (There is some scientific theories that make this claim) .
So does that mean we have no rights? If we are living in a simulation are we being hypocritical for not allowing simulated characters rights?
Or are rights an abstract idea that was invented to help control society and keep the "might makes right" believers at bay?
I need a Slurpee to think about this.

A poor imitation isn't the same as what it imitates.
Holden Caulfield has rights to **** chicks or even Stradler. But no.
Yes, fictional characters have rights, and the author of "Cupcakes" is going to hell.

Considering all of the bad fanfics you force people to read wouldn't you go to hell to?

No, I don't write bad fanfics, I just make people read them. I'm less like a genocidal warlord, and more like an NGO. I draw attention to the crimes against fictional characters committed by fanfic authors, and when my campaigns go viral, I celebrate by getting wasted and publicly tossing my...

Seems about on-par with a genocidal warlord for crimes against humanity.

At this moment, you are beautiful.
