I am once again looking for help in making this game not completely monotonous. Everything about combat is absolutely lame. Tactics just do not work, setting it up so monsters get hit with an incapacitate then detonating doesn't work without pausing the game about once a second and yet they still do not work. Is it just me or has this game COMPLETELY failed at integrating real time and the tactics mechanic it feels awful. Almost impossible to time this crap out and after they possibly follow your command they run off randomly. Fiddling with their pitiful behaviour choices isn't helping....

Works fine for me.

Yes, the tactics are dumb and it's unfortunate that they gutted the system compared to DA1 and 2. But it's hardly an insurmountable barrier. There are some skills the AI uses well (block/counter moves for example), most they do not. Just disable them and use them manually when you need them. That's what the tac cam is there for. If you don't like going into tac cam, play on normal or casual and you can get through by just playing it in real time as a hack-n-slash.

AI running off randomly? Use hold position, or for melee chars, tell them which enemy to hit with their autos.

Combos not working? Order the primer then take manual control of the char with the detonator, hold down auto-attack while waiting for the primer to happen and then mash the detonate ability yourself. Harder than it should be, maybe, but it literally takes 1 or 2 seconds to do. Not a big deal and works very consistently when done this way.

The AI sets off detonations on it's own all the time if they're targeting the right people.

tank -- follow -- self

everyone else -- follow -- tank

depending on your class the PC itself should either have the ai off for lone wolf classes like rogues or it can follow the tank like everyone else

will ensure they're all targeting the same guy and will ensure they use detonations as often as possible. Just set the tank's target to start the fight and everything else will fall into place.

The ai sets off two discharge detonations on it's own in this vid.

theres always mp :)

of course bioware  has really gone downhill...you will only be able to make it though 40% of the games and actually play the whole thing...unless you have a good host who will leave so the wave resets.

The game plays much better if you don't try to micromanage everything. Set the AI to preferr defensive abilities, and just let them go to town. Just detonate everything yourself as you see the opportunity instead of pausing all the time. If you think combat is boring roll up a DW rogue. Its by far the most exciting class to play.

The easiest way to get tactical mode to work is that you do not exit the mode; together with the other suggestions listed above.

Enter tactical mode, issue commands, "unpause" not exit tactical, see how it plays out and then pause to issue commands again.

If you exit the tactical mode, I have notice that the companions will resume their usual "AI" behaviour.

I agree, AI is shitty, and I have no idea why tactical mode doesn't support waypoints.

I'd say there is more or less two ways to deal with combat. As ashwind pointed out, the tactical way only works if you keep at it for as long as i takes for your issued commands to get done. If you order a waypoint on the other side of the field of battle for a character and then jumps back out to real time controlling your main, your order will be gone, as the char will keep doing whatever it is it's doing the AI-way.

I've played through the whole game on Hard without using the tactical cam once (except for testing it out) because I really like combining RPG character development and gearing with hack'n'slash-combat as it makes me as a player a little bit more involved. DA:I gets a whole lot of crap because it doesn't hold true a lot of things RPG, but I don't agree, to be honest.

When playing on Nightmare the game gets a bit harder, for sure, and really early on it can be wise using the tac-cam a bit if you don't only want to hunt rams. When one do, it works great, in my opinion. Orders are easy to issue and it's a really fun way to play, as well.

There's a lot of moaning about the clunky controls of the tac-cam but I think it's okay. Sure, I'd like to be able to order waypoints using more of a "bird's perspective", but in reality it's not that bad that you need to find the actual way to get the place you want. Gives you complete understanding and control over the route the char will take to get there. As for targeting enemies it's easy to use the auto-target-button when you want to target an enemy with a ranged char, for instance.

I've bought and tried out both DA:O and DA2, but never got into them. I tried DA:I on EA Access on X1, and found myself exited. I am enjoying it alot, and no small part because of the combat, actually.

This is incorrect.

I jump in and out of tactical mode several times in that vid and the hold commands issued ALL stuck.

Line of sight did not break them.
Behaviors that were set to follow did not break them.
Going in and out of tac cam did not break them.
Applying them mid combat did not break them. (I applied a hold command to my PC rogue when I took control of Blackwall and ran him into LoS of Dorian and Sera and the PC stayed there being attacked by a hyena)

The only things I've ever seen break hold commands are

1.) going too far away from your troops, although as the vid shows you can go a damned sight ahead of them without them porting to you and unless you're trying to exploit the ai you don't even need to be any farther than the range displayed in the video to keep your troops safe.

2.) commanding your troops to do something else. For example, setting your ranged guys to hold, and then later using the attack my target command. If your tactics and behaviors are properly set up you shouldn't need to manually tell them to attack your target any way.

3.) Being flagged as out of combat mid-fight which can happen when dragons fly away.

sinosleep, I'm sure you're correct on that one! Hold command wasn't was I was thinking of.
