I've been trying to figure out which one to play with for a few days now. I've started both characters and really enjoy them both. This is my first playthrough, difficulty is on hard. I've watched some youtube videos, I've seen Rogues that can solo Dragons on Nightmare. I don't believe this is possible with Mages though? Doesn't that inherently mean that a Rogue is better than a Mage in this game? I know the party dynamics matter a lot for group fights, and soloing a dragon isn't the same as managing a group of enemies. I'm looking at either Rift Mage or Archer Assassin. I'd really appreciate all your opinions on this and reasons for choosing either.
Archer Assassin or Mage

Hold your dracolisks there buddy. The knight enchanter ( a mage specialization) is considered the most overpowered solo class in the game. If you want to solo dragons pick it and you can solo any dragon on nightmare.
The best thing to look for is which one you'll have the most fun playing. I asked earlier for a breakdown of class playstyles. Here's a link to the forum : http://forum.bioware...lass-playstyle/
When deciding on a group you should have some flexibility. The general safe format is tank( a damage soaker), dps, dps, support . So rift mage or assasin would count as dps. Blackwall makes the best tank, and you can choose support and an extra dps.
Hint: Vivienne specializes as a knight enchanter for support...

Haha "hold your dracolisks" I like it. I've seen the KE and really don't want to play that. It doesn't seem like fun when the most efficient way to use it is spamming one attack. I read through that post before I submitted this one and found it very helpful. It helped me narrow down my choices to really Rift mage or Archer Assassin. Thanks for your reply ![]()

I've been playing both on different runs, on hard and nightmare.
Archer Assassin is a real killing machine, very dynamic. The distance helps you control the playground. It requires some practice to master the kiting/dodging part (because you die very quick if you get hit) and placement is very important. The most fun build I've played so far.
Rift mage is much more straightforward but quite fun too. Pull of the abyss gather foes together and you can nuke them with aoe. The barrier helps for more survavibility and you have to stand still to be able to chain spells.

Thanks for your reply, so you'd say that the Archer Assassin is more fun than the Rift mage? I do really enjoy both, I've gotten them both up to building the watchtowers and am so far really enjoying them.

Don't know why that is, or why it keeps getting repeated. The knight enchanter is sturdy, but it is far from overpowered. Rogues can solo dragons and kill them in mere seconds, even if you aren't a tempest using thousand cuts. What I will grant the KE specialization is that it does not take as long to mature as other builds that require lots of skill point investment. By the time you reach skyhold you can simply respec your mage, just take the barrier talents in spirit and invest the rest into the KE tree and you're good to go, whatever else you add is just gravy.

Overpowered doesn't always mean "kill everything in seconds". Just saying, it's a little overpowered in another way.

and why is that exactly? how is it overpowered? Because refreshing their barrier makes them beefy? sword and shield warriors can become unkillable too, is it their damage output? There are other specs and class choices that can put out superior numbers, so how exactly is it an overpowered class?

I find it to be a certain combination of things on my Knight Enchanter. There's a passive in it that causes you to get 50% more mana regen while within 5 meters of something. Add in the regen from spirit for having a barrier on you that you cast, the passive in Knight Enchanter that causes you to gain more barrier as you attack, and then you can just Fade Step in (by far the fastest approach skill,) then press and hold your Spirit Blade button. Constant, considerable damage that eats through guards and barriers for breakfast, all at the same time regaining more mana than your spending and constantly refilling your barrier. No one else can do that with one button. Even Champion Warriors need to fit in regular attacks to regain stamina to keep their skills and guard up.
