I wondered if a mage's staff affect his/hers abilities?

 

What I mean is that if I, for example, have a fire staff, will that make make my fire abilities better and my cold, spirit (etc.) abilities worse? Or does the staff only affect basic attack?

I'm fairly certain it only affects basic attacks. Unlike in the previous two games, there is no gear that increases specific types of magic damage (fire, cold, electricity, spirit). As far as I can tell, anyway.

It affects elemental barrage, that is it. Changes it's element and gives weakness to said element if you upgrade it. Otherwise the staff just gives it's damage to spells.

It only decides what element your normal attacks will be.
