The only reason I'm playing DAI is because I loved ME so much, and it's a long wait til ME4  :(

I've never played a dungeons and dragons type game before so I realise some of my criticisms may just be part of the genre - please forgive me if that's the case.

  • The game looks fantastic. The free roam and sense of scale are amazing. I like the mix of characters (don't care about the hair styles), but on PS4 at least, everyone seems to look a bit ....... sweaty....

  • The sheer number of quests, and the generally high quality.  The mostly British voice cast  ;)

  • Most of the enemies seem to be bullet sponges (arrow sponges?) and battles just seem to be button mashing fests (Maybe this just shows up my preference for guns  ;) ). If I can avoid a fight I do, I just find the combat too boring.

  • The Inventory system is giving me a nervous breakdown.  The cap on items means I'm continually trading, or just throwing stuff away.  This part is a major turn off.  I'm spending more time in the menu system than actually playing the game.

  • I have an Inventory stuffed with cool sounding weapons I can't use, as I'm not at the right level. WHAT!  Who thought this was a good idea. This is rage inducing.  If you do this with ME4 we'll be having words

  • Most quests put a quest marker on the map which is great, so why do I need to search the whole war room map to find war room items?  Why not put a marker against the items related to the active quest? This seems like a strange oversight.

  • The levelling up / powers system is way too complicated ( I do realise some players love complicated games), it leaves me cold.  Again spending so much time fiddling with menus, saps the life out of the game for me.

A massive impressive game. I'll probably play to the end, but if future DA games are similar to this, I'll be sticking with ME. I doubt I'll play through more than once, and DLC is off the agenda. ( I played through ME3, three times).

It might just be that dungeons and dragons is not for me, and the things I've highlighted are just staples in the genre.

6.5/10

(ME2 9/10, ME3 8/10)

Believe me when I tell you, most of your grievances are legitimate and definitely not genre-related. The game just seems to have been released in a hurry, a long time before it should have, with many bugs, many un-cared for issues and many placeholders for future content/additions. Kinda like SWTOR at release, but worse.

The game was released in such an incomplete state, I'm not surprised at your comments.  Game of the year for eye candy impact alone evidently.

The game platform has tremendous potential -if they complete it!  Moreover, get back to telling a great consistent story using fully developed characters with dialog and behavior models.

Although the controls issues are largely equal opportunity frustration; next generation character behaviors require considerably more memory and computing power- if DA3 had included Quest aware advanced behavior and dialogs there would have been more issues with older consoles lagging and crashing.

I think they're trying to make you focus on setting up and utilizing cross-party combos for large damage bursts, which ironically means the combat is not 'button mashing fest'... unless it goes over your head and you just mash the buttons without realizing there's better alternative. To use analogy you're likely familiar with, it's like playing ME and not utilizing the power combos there.

It shouldn't have been released for old gens in the first place. But EA wanted the usual SIMS4-esque money grab.

Yeah DAI has its flaws, I'd give is a solid 7/10, but I think it's still fun. If BW would fix some of these bugs and stop releasing MP DLC then people can actually enjoy the game.

Off-topic: ME1- 9/10, ME2- 9.5/10, ME3 - 5/10 (It gets the 5 only because of Courteney Taylor's awesome voice acting, other wise it'll get a 0)

6.5-7.0/10. That's my evaluation.

Start with a 10 then subtract UI, combat AI, no autoattack, tac-cam, menu navigation, complex crafting, inventory, filler quests.....

On scenery, I give it a 10/10. Everything else starts going down.

While I do use a power against an enemy which is primed, I don't set up the team specifically for combos, and I never use the strategy view, can't see the point.

It's for this reason that maybe this genre is not for me. I freely admit that.

My gripe about the combat is minor. My main issue is with the UI, which I feel takes a lot of the fun away from the visuals and character interactions.

It's still a great game and massive achievement, it's just not as amazing as I had hoped.

The level up system is too complicated? The system was gutted for a more casual audience and its still to complicated? SMDH

The article on low profit margins is not surprising and likely why many developers focus on a single platform to avoid the myriad of issues challenging profits in the industry.  DA3 was significantly behind schedule and required significant material investment in addition to talent - always a concern of the bottom line.  However, the "tools" (infrastructure) have intrinsic value much like the semiconductor foundry compared to glass manufacturing.  That said, any future DLC will see pressure to prove ROI -just how costly? TBD

I wonder if it would have been better if they did not spend the time developing it on old gen.

Most likely. But so many people are still using the old gens, so they would miss out on a huge batch of customers.

I believe this is a UI issue, the game's skill trees are about as deep as ME3.

The old gen players got the shaft. This article proves that Frostbite 2.0 engine was designed for the NEXT-GEN consoles.

EA wants money no matter what the state of the delivered game or platform suitability.

I agree.  As a gamer I'm kind of insulted by how dumbed down it is.  I feel like they think I'm an idiot.

Unfortunately it sounds like they may have tried to make the game appeal to players like myself more.

They ended up failing players like both you and I.

It's too fiddly and complicated for those familiar with the simpler controls of ME, and for those wanting to cut-to-the-chase and too dumb for players who like to go deep, modify everything and plan a complex strategy.

As I said earlier I do realise this game is not for me, but it also sounds like it may also not be for you.

As a fellow Mass Effect huge fan, I want to rename this game Mass Effect 3 : Inquisition!

They are a lot of analogies between the two stories :

You are a new and independant group inside a political chaos.

You gather chiefs, influence and ressources.

You have a small task force with brawns and brains.

You make choices all the game long.

It works well in ME3, but in DA you hit pretty fast a huge problem of realism : YOU are the chief of the Inquisition. YOU give ordrers to a massive group of person, an army! But YOU gather all the small ressources, herbs, ore and everything is needed for the same troup. In fact, I was almost waiting for a quest to bring beer at the bar or to bring some meat for the tavern. At the same time, you have a gigantic castle, a pretty chamber but not a single place to lay your sword (not a chest).

My Shepard was clearly an rogue commander, a hero with Garrus beloved main cannon of the Normandy as the most deadly thing under his hand. He worked to give some chance to come back alive of the mission for him and his comrades of fire. As the Inquisitior, I have the faint but permanent feeling I am here to bring shoelaces to my soldiers...
