Some bears do live together. In an are in Alaska for instance (saw it on a documentary)

I doubt the developers were thinking of that.  This is the bear equivalent of the Kirkwall rooftop jumpers.

Hafter's Woods is not fun. It exposes the worst of the AI and random encounter system.

Bears in general aren't too troublesome, but their AI is annoying. If they're not already chasing something and they come within even a moderate distance from you, they'll laser in on the protagonist (most enemies always ignore the party until they attack, it seems) and practically chase you from one end of the map to the other.

Seriously, it's a freaking bear. Find something else to do. Go root around in trash or something, and leave me the hell alone.

And then you get those ridiculous lyrium freaks, who home in on you regardless of their spawn point (they don't even need to see you to start creeping). You can see them coming a mile away, and even after they stealth you can hear them (and you can just chase after them and target them once you get close enough). And then they come out of stealth and start acting like they're training for the winter Olympics.

The whole region is just a pain to explore. I think that was the least fun I've had in the game so far.

The bolded part reminds me of Oblivion, when I first started playing it, was low level, hadn't modded it to death, and didn't have combat figured out. I came across a night troll or something like that and started running from the east side of the map, all the way to the west side. A gargoyle got involved too and I ended up getting a huge number of named NPCs killed, wiped out the major population of one town and felt like a terrible hero, all because I couldn't kill those things myself. It was a slaughterhouse and messed up a bunch of quests because all kinds of important people were dead. :P

That's when I learned to install mods to fix the game. I love mods and my games live by them. :)

You have to remember Bioware is Canadian. This is our daily life up here. Bears, cougars, elk, you name it. It just randomly spawns and wanders the area. Sometimes you go to leave for work and its just there in your front lawn. Or its patiently waiting in the car for you having already called shotgun.

Oh man, that's hilariously awful!  :)   I can just see it now...

All the refugees in Redcliffe are wiped out as the Herald runs, screaming through their midst followed by ten bears.

There were tons of bears in the Brecillian forest. This isn't that serious--unless you're Stephan Colbert. ;) Just kill them and move on. If you can't kill them easily (hinterlands), you moved south under levelled. If you're outside the hinterlands, even great bears shouldn't be a problem. Hafter's wood can be mildly annoying, but onlly if you don't pay attention. It's like the only place in the whole game to walk that's actually somewhat dangerous. They also have useful pelts. Those need to be widely available for crafting. God knows we don't want any more dog killing.

I saw two skunks having a battle just the other day, right on my neighbors lawn. And where there's skunks, there's...you guessed it...bears!

This made me laugh, lol. My first time through Skyrim, while I was low-level, I walked into a bunch of giants just as the first dragon (the one in Whiterun) attacked. I ran away (I had encountered a giant before and had my ass handed to me) and the giants fought the dragon while I hid behind a rock. The giants died, but had done enough damage so that it only took two hits to finish the dragon. Lydia was dead in a hole nearby, but I didn't reload. Screw her!

But yeah, mods are awesome and have made games like Skyrim, Oblivion, and Fallout:NV so much better. They actually made DA:O better, too...I can no longer play unless I have Dahlia's mods, because they make the Alistair/Warden story so much better than what BioWare gave us!

No, there were 4 bears in the Brecellian forest and they were in one ravine for the most part that you can sneak by.  This is bears in quantities like bunny rabbits but with the staying power of Ulfred as a giant demon at the top of the Circle Tower.

That's just ridiculous and lazy.

I have DAO modded up too and it makes the game so much more fun. Couldn't do without those mods and I hope that someday DAI can be modded by all those smart modders out there.

On topic: I play the pure vanilla versions of all DA games, no mods at all. Still like them.

I'm still not seeing why it's a problem. Just kill it, lol. They aren't that tough unless you're too low level to be in that area.

I've never had my party killed by a bear, but running through 6 of them between forest camp and the mercenaries was crazy.  It's something they can fix in future games.

The quantities of bears in video games is never anywhere remotely accurate. There's nothing like being chased through the forest by six bears in Red Dead Redemption. At least Inquisition avoided that.

Sorry Zobert, but the base design of the game is endless trashmob respawn that happens every second. Bears, wolves, hyenas, spiders, it really doesn't matter. And seems that won't change unless someone finally makes norespawn mod so the most annoying thing in this game gets removed.

Didn't Mike say that if you reduce the wildlife population it would take some time to repopulate the area?... /sarcastic here

Oh. my.  Stephan Colbert is a comedian who started on 'The Daily Show' with John Stewart and got his own show. It was a parody of an interview show as run by a rabidly conservative host. It was very funny and just ended because he's taking over from Letterman--presumably out of character, lol. His 'persona' had a thing about bears.

There was this one time I got chased halfway across the Hinterlands by six bears, two mabari, and a lyrium smuggler...

... and a partridge in a pear tree

Bears are solitary huh? Tell that to Goldilocks.

That area has a lot of respawn problems, ot just bears.

I almost asked that and it's really bugging me. Does his horse count as the 5th party member? Poor horse...they don't like bears.  :(

The amount of HP they had were on the overly high side, but they didn't bother me much. Only when they spawned right next to me while I was fighting templars.
