Because every true video game connoisseur knows that the best games are the ones nobody has ever heard of, everything else is just too mainstream for me!

But yeah what are some of those obscure gems you have played over the years that you feel did not get the recognition they deserved?

While it is a game you have probably heard of already I have to say Evil Genius

Evil_Genius_Coverart.png

Basically the love child of Austin Powers and Dungeon Keeper complete with hollowed out volcano lair! While the game does have it's flaws it did provide a rather unique spin on the Dungeon Keeper formula by focusing more on subterfuge and misdirection as the primary method of base defense, while you can deploy deadlier traps and put your base on full alert for a shoot on sight approach it is usually better to keep enemy agents clueless and distracted by diversions and away from your more sensitive areas. Also the James Bond/Austin Powers theme was just icing on the cake, would love to see a sequel or spiritual successor with more outlandish base locations like undersea or moon base, if anyone knows of similar games please don't be stingy with the details.

Also while I am sure most of you have already heard of it Arcanum needs a kickstarter or spiritual successor or something, the build variety and gameplay options in that game are amazing.

Not obscure (especially around here) but Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines should have had a sequel. And yet I'm glad it doesn't because without Troika Games I'd guess the sequel would be rubbish or a failure like that MMO that seems to have vanished, thankfully.

Shadowrun, for the Sega Genesis.

They still make games for the Sega Genesis, right?

I have good news: Shadowrun Dragonfall has been out for a few months.

I'm still on the fence about whether I like it as much as Returns.

I know ^^ I did like them both, even though I would have liked t see more actual choices that have an impact on the game. Rlly like it otherwise, both the gameplay and the cyberpunk mood

Not really obscure, but underrated and still not as known as it should be IMO.

I want more :/

I feel like Wing Commander, despite being well known during it's run and which had five installments, has been lost to the collective gaming culture.

If talk about a series that dealt with companions, permadeath and choice and consequence in huge ways, you need only look here. Your relationship between others affected the story and how things played out, and losing a squad mate through the normal course of a mission meant that member was dead - forever. Others would react to that, new members might become available because of the death of someone else, etc.

When people talk about how devs can't use permadeath with games that are driven by companion interactions, I need only look at Wing Commander IV, which was done with full video capture FMV movie cutscenes and Mark Hamil as the main character, yet still included dialogue choices, companion permadeath and C&C. Suck an egg to that.

EDIT: So to finish the thought, I'd like to see that series rebooted. Then again, flight sims seem to be a deader genre than old school RPGs.

That. Though it really is more of a gem that everybody seems to have forgotten, rather than never heard of.

As for on-topic: it has been called already, but: Jade Empire needs a sequel. Better faster than not, John Cleese isn't the youngest anymore.

Sad that the game did not do too well on PC. It did rather well on XBOX but apparently it didn't get much support due to Microsoft's policies.
