So I'm playing a male elf Mage on my second playthrough. The first time I did this quest I brought iron bull, Dorian, and Vivienne as I was playing a rogue. I realized later that to get the most out of those scenes I probably should have brought companions who were more tied to that mission.

I'm thinking this time:
Blackwall (he wants to see Adamant)
Solas (he wants to see the Fade)
And Varric because of Hawke

I played the scene before Adamant in the western approach with that party and they all had something to say. I was satisfied having brought them.

However I also think perhaps because of Justinia Cassandra might be good to bring along.

Who do you think is the best party for Here Lies the Abyss?

Edit: or what about Cole? Since he's a spirit?

Definitely not Varric because afterwards he asks "Where is hawke?".  That made me cringe, he was there, he knew what happened. I like bringing Cassandra because of the divine and Solas. I brought Cole once but that was a bit cruel.

I took Solas, Vivenne, and Cole last pt. It was pretty interesting. I can't remember who all I took my first pt except blackwall. I'm taking blackwall, cass, and varric this time. It's all about preference really.

I would bring Cole in place of Varric as he always has some dialogue with Solas. I brought Blackwall with me the first time and I regret doing it tbh. He's sort of...underwhelming there. Bring Cas instead? Or Sera? I've heard she's funny in the Fade.

Blackwall has shenanigans with wardens.

Solas gives you fade insight.

Cole is a demon so he gets a special reaction in the fade

Sera is hilarious in the fade, so is Iron Bull.

Varric has entertaining dialouge with Hawke, but a sad ending if you make a certain choice.

Dorian gives you some insight into how Desire Demons work.

Cassandra has some funny comments.

Vivienne, I never took, I suspect she might have some highly interesting comments.

Definitely not Varric because afterwards he asks "Where is hawke?".  That made me cringe, he was there, he knew what happened. I like bringing Cassandra because of the divine and Solas. I brought Cole once but that was a bit cruel.

No, Varric left through the rift before Hawke/Loghain(Stroud, Alistar) sacrificed themselves.

Yeah. I'm one of those weird people who can't bare to sacrifice Hawke. So I wasn't too worried about that. I only have Stroud. Alistair's probably the only one I'd sacrifice Hawke for. And even that's debatable.

Thanks for the input though! Side note: why is bringing Cole to the fade cruel?

you must bring Sera to fade at least ones, she gets a panic attack afterwards it's worth it.

He really feels awful being there in his current form, if Solas is there it seems to help though. I happen to like Cole so I guess I felt bad about it.

If you want a whole party freaking out : Cole /Bull/Sera.

Blackwall is nice but only for the warden part of the quest.

Solas is the fade nerd , so ...

I thought Cassandra was disappointing .

I take Blackwall for the whole interaction with the wardens, Solas cause fade nerd, and Cole because he is a spirit and honestly he freaks out and if you have Solas with you at the same time they have a dialogue together.

The funniest ones for the fade section is Bull and Vivienne.

I have a clear bias for Cassandra, so she always goes to all of the major story missions, this included. It's even better that she has plenty of relevant dialogue about Divine Justinia, plus the reveals in the Fade follow-up nicely with her crisis of faith.

I also take Sera for her freak-out moment and subsequent dialogue afterward (though Cole and Bull do too), and Varric has to go because it just makes sense that he'd want to follow his friend into battle. I don't leave Hawke behind so I don't have to deal with the illogical dialogue that happens afterward.

Actually, if you look at the cutscene again, your party members escape from the Fade first. You're next, and the two NPCs (warden and Hawke) are bringing up the rear. So Varric wouldn't have known what happened.

The REAL problem is why somebody needs to be left behind at all, since you were clearly going to escape before that big boogiemonster could reach you....

Well, I guess this go, I'll put up with Sera until after the fade then, just to see the chit totally loose it. I like Cole in there and Iron Bull, because of his reaction - big horned, dragonhearted ox is terrified LOL. I'm a mage so, don't really need another mage with me.

she flips out

and he says "Yeah what she said"

It's fun. The nightmare kicks her right in the nuts.. if she had them ;)

Her initial response to being in the fade is also typically Viv.

On my current run I'll take Cole and Solas, and probably Blackwall. I've never used Cole or Blackwall before at any place before, so I'm looking forward to it.

First time ever doing the quest I brought Blackwall, Cassandra, and Varric. Each had a personal tie to the mission, I was mostly pleased.

However in other playthroughs and all future ones I more than likely won't ever bring Blackwall again. He seriously has no business there, nor does an ordinary fella like himself deserve to physically walk the Fade.

My personal favorite team to take is Cassandra, Solas, and Varric.

Taking Cole is pretty cruel.

Cassandra's answer to the demon's taunting is golden.

I ran all main story quests with Cassandra, Solas and Varric. Not the funniest combination but I think they represent the default party in DA:I.

Hell yeah. Ended being my main team for most of the game.

Again, it's not illogical. Your party goes through the portal and then Blinky blocks the way for the Inquisitor, Hawke and the Warden. They have to choose who stays behind so the other two can get out, too. The only time I sacrificed Hawke, Varric wasn't there and Cassandra stepped forward to ask where Hawke was.

Also, I wouldn't take Cole without Solas just because Solas tries to calm him down- otherwise it's just heartbreaking.

If you want The Fade scenes to be funny, bring Sera, Bull and Cole.

Same here. I did Here Lies the Abyss with Cassandra, Vivienne and Dorian and then reloaded because I missed "my team". I can hardly bare to have Varric out of my party at all. X)

I take differnt ones each time. Varric, meh, depends on which keep I'm using 'cos he's horrible if you leave Hawke in the fade. Solas, yes but once you take him once, he doesn't need to go again. Bull, yes, he's funny, Sera will be doing this run despite my hatred of her. Dorian, did that, not impressed. Cassandra so so, Viv I like her getting taken down a notch but, others are more fun.

According to Aron Bend, from QA. enjoys bringing Iron Bull, Sera and Cole to Adamant Fortress. No one is happy to be there and it results in some phenomenal banter.

For those wondering, I got the above information from the collectors edition guide book on page 47

I've taken:

Blackwall/Solas/Varric (would recommend)

Blackwall/Dorian/Varric (I think Dorian's comments are hilarious, the other guys, not so much. Except I love Varric's 'Great, Hawke. Why don't you just dare the Old Gods to stop us?' line. "Look, we're almost there!" That's right up there with 'what's the worst that could happen?')

Cassandra/Solas/Varric (meh. 'Oh, the Divine!' 'It's the Black City, I wanna touch it!' 'Where's Hawke?. . .Where's Hawke?')

Cassandra/Solas/Sera (Interesting!)

Awkwardly enough, Blackwall is standing around at Adamant (and may have dialogue) regardless of whether or not he's actually in your party--not unlike Solas who randomly pops up wearing his default gear...(judging you). Since I don't need him to give his little 'You don't know me' (no, really?!) speech, I bench his keister for Cassandra whose dialogue changes intrigue me. I brought Dorian along when he was romanced, his follow-up scenes were nice. Bringing Cassandra along and not Varric is interesting, and makes me wonder what happens if you don't have either of them along (but I'd really rather not bring Blackwall and IB and Cole both tend to fall down if a demon sneezes on them a time or two (it's not them, it's me, probably).)
